Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A bold new reconception of ancient Greek drama as a mode of philosophical thinking The Philosophical Stage offers an innovative approach to ancient Greek literature and thought that places drama at the heart of intellectual history. Drawing on evidence from tragedy and comedy, Joshua Billings shines new light on the development of early Greek philosophy, arguing that drama is our best source for understanding the intellectual culture of classical Athens. In this incisive book, Billings recasts classical Greek intellectual history as a conversation across discourses and demonstrates the significance of dramatic reflections on widely shared theoretical questions. He argues that neither "literature" nor "philosophy" was a defined category in the fifth century BCE, and develops a method of reading dramatic form as a structured investigation of issues at the heart of the emerging discipline of philosophy. A breathtaking work of intellectual history by one of today's most original classical scholars, The Philosophical Stage presents a novel approach to ancient drama and sets a path for a renewed understanding of early Greek thought.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I am attempting to colonise the last frontier. Time, Elena, time. If we could inhabit different iterations of self, we could undo all the mistakes of the past. Don't you see? Hilary Fannin's radical adaptation of Maxim Gorky's classic 1905 dark comedy reworks the original text and draws it into the here and now. Children of the Sun is the story of a small family and their quixotic collection of acquaintances, entertaining and enraging each other while, unseen beyond their fragile walls, their world is being reshaped by unstoppable forces. The play asks how we survive without the benefit of hindsight and whether science, art or love are capable of saving us from uncertainty and destruction. Co-produced by Rough Magic and the Abbey Theatre, Children of the Sun premiered on the Abbey stage as part of Rough Magic's 40th-anniversary year in April 2024. This edition was published to coincide with that production.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Play something kitty-cat-ish . . . sweet. Imagine I've died and you're galloping through fields. As their thirtieth wedding anniversary approaches, Alice and Edgar are locked in a bitter struggle. They've driven away their children and their friends. Their relationship is sustained by taunts and recriminations. When a newcomer breaks into the midst of the fray, their insular lives threaten to spin out of control. We're all just bodies and when we're dead we're worm food, but as long as your body keep going, flailing or thrashing about, we are duty bound to fight, to scratch and kick, until you're fucked. That's my philosophy. Laced with biting humour, The Dance of Death is August Strindberg's landmark drama about a marriage pushed to its limits, adapted in a thrilling new version by Rebecca Lenkiewicz. The Dance of Death opened at the Bath Theatre Royal's Ustinov Theatre in May 2022 before going on UK tour in an Arcola Theatre, Cambridge Arts Theatre, Royal & Derngate, Northampton, Oxford Playhouse and Theatre Royal Bath Productions co-production.

Book Synopsis The Classic Theatre by : Eric Bentley

Book excerpt: "The classical view, said Gilbert Murray, is "the view of a man whose training and tastes lead him to regard literature as one, and the great Greek and Roman writers as central forces in it." Now, though justice may have been done to Greek and Roman drama itself, many of us have only the haziest notion how the tradition continued. In performance it is possible that there was an unbroken tradition from ancient days to the commedia dell'arte in the sixteenth century. The commedia in turn laid the basis for modern comedy. Yet the dramas enacted by the Italian comedians remain unknown because they survived only in unreadable scenarios. For the present volume Leon Katz has made a conjectural reconstruction of the complete dialogue of one such scenario. While the players maintained the classical tradition before a popular audience, the writers revived Roman comedy for a courtly audience. Machiavelli's Mandrake is the crowning achievement of the revival. There was no Chinese wall between the popular and courtly traditions. Such a writer as Beolco belongs to both, and later the mingling of elements will be a matter of controversy. The greatest of the feuds was between Goldoni and Gozzi in the eighteenth century. The paradox is that, in retrospect, Gozzi, who championed the commedia, seems the more "literary" and "academic," while Goldoni, the supposed reformer, if not abolisher, of the commedia, can plausibly be presented by modern scholars as its restorer... The question: What is Theatre? arises at this point, and the best purpose this collection can serve is to make the reader ask such elemental questions. As in the engravings of Callot, we find in these texts the essence of dramatic art." --

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Insecure siblings fighting for their parents’ attention; bickering spouses who can’t stand to be together or apart; adultery and sexual experimentation; even the struggle to balance work and family: These are themes as much at home in our time as they were in the twelfth century. In James Goldman’s classic play The Lion in Winter, domestic turmoil rises to an art form. Keenly self-aware and motivated as much by spite as by any sense of duty, Henry II and Eleanor of Aquitaine maneuver against each other to position their favorite son in line for succession. By imagining the inner lives of Henry, Eleanor, and their sons, John, Geoffrey, and Richard, Goldman created the quintessential drama of family strife and competing ambitions, a work that gives visceral, modern-day relevance to the intrigues of Angevin England. Combining keen historical and psychological insight with delicious, mordant wit, the stage play has become a touchstone of today’s theater scene, and Goldman’s screenplay for the 1968 film adaptation won him an Academy Award. Told in “marvelously articulate language, with humor that bristles and burns” (Los Angeles Times), The Lion in Winter is the rare play that bursts into life on the printed page.
