Book Synopsis Mechanochemistry of Solid Surfaces by : ?mmanuil Markovich Gutman
Download or read book Mechanochemistry of Solid Surfaces written by ?mmanuil Markovich Gutman and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 1994 with total page 340 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book covers the fundamental relationships between solid surface chemical reactivity and the stressed state of surface layers; developed mainly by the author. Acceleration of chemical reactions by mechanical action (mechanochemical effect) and near-surface plasticity increase caused by chemical reactions (chemomechanical effect) acting simultaneously; open new possibilities for the control of a wide range of processes from corrosion to new materials engineering. This monograph is a unique work on this subject and will be essential reading for undergraduate and postgraduate students engaged in studying surface phenomena in materials science; chemistry and chemical engineering; as well as for scientists and engineers in the industries where these phenomena are important.
Download or read book Corrosion written by L L Shreir and published by Newnes. This book was released on 2013-10-22 with total page 1233 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Corrosion, Volume 1: Metal/Environment Reactions is concerned with the subject of corrosion, with emphasis on the control of the environmental interactions of metals and alloys used as materials of construction. Corrosion is treated as a synthesis of corrosion science and corrosion engineering. This volume is comprised of nine chapters; the first of which provides an overview of the principles of corrosion and oxidation, with emphasis on the electrochemical mechanism of corrosion and how the kinetics of cathodic and anodic partial reactions control the rate of overall corrosion reaction. Attention then turns to the effects of environmental factors such as concentration, velocity, and temperature based on the assumption that either the anodic or cathodic reaction, but not both, is rate-controlling. The corrosion of ferrous and non-ferrous metals and alloys, as well as rarer and noble metals, is considered. The reader is also introduced to high-temperature corrosion and mechanical factors that affect corrosion. This book concludes with topics of electrochemistry and metallurgy relevant to corrosion, including the nature of the electrified interface between the metal and the solution; charge transfer across the interface under equilibrium and non-equilibrium conditions; overpotential and the rate of an electrode reaction; and the hydrogen evolution reaction and hydrogen absorption by ferrous alloys. This book will be of value to students as well as workers and engineers in the field of corrosion.

Book Synopsis Fundamental Aspects of Structural Alloy Design by : Robert Jaffee
Download or read book Fundamental Aspects of Structural Alloy Design written by Robert Jaffee and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-11-21 with total page 665 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: FUNDAMENTAL ASPECTS OF STRUCTURAL ALLOY DESIGN is the proceedings of the tenth Battelle Colloquium in the Materials Sciences, held in Seattle, Washington, and Harrison Hot Springs, B.C., September 15-19, 1975. The theme of the conference was the emerging science of alloy design. Although the relationships of properties of alloys to their composition and structure have long been a dominant theme in physical metallurgy, it is only recently that metallurgists have turned their attention from the analytical, post hoc study of the structure-property relationship to the synthesis approach of alloy design. As usual in the Battelle colloquia, the first day started with a group of introductory lectures presented by leaders in the field, each emphasizing his personal approach to the problem. This provided a historical perspective for the colloquium. These papers, together with the banquet address of Professor J. R. Low, Jr., who was honored at the colloquium, comprise the introductory section of these proceedings. Alloy design is generally specific to a given application. Thus, the needs in alloy design in a number of important applications, gas turbines, electrical-power-generation equipment, airframes, pressure vessels, and nuclear applications were presented in a group of papers. An agenda discus sion on "Needs in Alloy Design" followed. These papers give the external constraints on alloy design applications, and criteria for mechanical, physical, and chemical properties for which the alloys must be designed.
