Book excerpt: "This study explores how the climate shift in the late 1970's impacted sockeye salmon feeding. Stable isotope ratios (13C and 15N) of recent muscle and scale tissues from five mature salmon species are highly correlated (R2=0.96 and 0.91, respectively), validating the use of archived scales for retrospective analysis. These data suggest a trophic separation by species with chinook occupying the highest level, followed by coho with some degree of overlap among sockeye, pink and chum at the lowest level. Archived scales from four different sockeye stocks from Kodiak Island and Southeast region were analyzed over the last 34 years to investigate changes relative to the 1976-1977 Climate Regime Shift. Most stocks show no statistical differences before and after the regime shift in either isotope. Despite recorded differences in sockeye abundance and size between these two regimes, these data suggest only minor changes in prey items"--Leaf iii.

Book excerpt: The widths of growth zones recorded on otoliths of sockeye salmon (Oncorhynchus nerka) from Rivers Inlet were measured to assess the impacts of environmental conditions on growth at different life history stages. Otoliths from the pre-decline (1984-1987) and post-decline brood years (1997-2005) were compared. Post-decline juveniles were significantly larger than pre-decline individuals during the migration to sea, but grew less in the first marine year. Final size was not significantly different between time periods. Functional regression analyses were performed to investigate the relationship between otolith growth and sea surface salinity at McInnes Island. Otolith growth was positively correlated with salinity during September and October. Decreased salinity under a 30 ppt threshold appears to have signalled recent unfavourable oceanic conditions for growth and possibly survival.

Book excerpt: "Anadromous sockeye salmon are the only Pacific salmon that require an extensive rearing period in a lake environment. Recent studies suggest changes in lake nutrient inputs are directly related to the magnitude of annual spawning populations (escapement), and can be quantified by sediment stable isotope analysis of nitrogen 15N). Marine nitrogen supplied by returned salmon is enriched in 15N relative to the freshwater nitrogen, which is derived from atmospheric N2 (ð15N=0 0/00). Recent (1987-1996) limnological investigations of Chilkat Lake, Alaska, matched to brood year escapement estimates, indicate that sockeye marine-derived phosphorus and nitrogen contributed up to 87% and 20%, respectively, of the lake nutrient pool. Since salmon populations fluctuate annually, the resulting marine derived nutrient (MDN) inputs and ð15N also fluctuate. Sedimentary ð15N is positively correlated (r2=0.8605, p=0.0076, df=5) with observed escapement. Additionally, ð15N is positively related to lake paleoproductivity and inversely correlated with high concentrations of CaCO3 and glacial silt. The frequency and duration of these CaCO3 inputs are believed to be the result of climate related glacial meltwater intrusions from the Tsirku River. Thus, fluctuations in MDN can be shown to influence the overall sockeye salmon production at Chilkat Lake by controlling lake productivity"--Leaf iii.

Book excerpt: For thousands of years, fisheries were crucial to the sustenance of the First Peoples of the Pacific Coast. Yet human impact has left us with a woefully incomplete understanding of their histories prior to the industrial era. Covering Alaska, British Columbia, and Puget Sound, The Archaeology of North Pacific Fisheries illustrates how the archaeological record reveals new information about ancient ways of life and the histories of key species. Individual chapters cover salmon, as well as a number of lesser-known species abundant in archaeological sites, including pacific cod, herring, rockfish, eulachon, and hake. In turn, this ecological history informs suggestions for sustainable fishing in today’s rapidly changing environment.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Karluk Lake is located on the southwest side of Kodiak Island and supports the largest sockeye salmon (Oncorhynchus nerka) run in the Kodiak Management Area. Sockeye salmon smolt studies have been conducted sporadically on Karluk Lake since the 1920s. This project reinstituted a Karluk Lake sockeye salmon smolt program to estimate the size and condition of outmigrating smolt; in addition, individual smolt were collected on an annual basis for stable isotope analysis. Sockeye salmon smolt outmigrating from Karluk Lake were sampled for size and condition from 2011 to 2013. Annually, a total of three strata samples (early, middle, late), with a goal of 280 fish per stratum, were collected and used to quantify the average length, weight, and condition of the outmigration. Whole fish samples were frozen for isotope analysis. Modeling experiments using body size as a parameter in a total adult run forecasting were conducted. Results demonstrated no statistically significant differences in body size estimates between strata within years; however, 2013 body size was significantly larger than 2011 and 2012 and the largest recorded in the history of the project time series. Isotope analysis yielded variable results over years but, overall, demonstrated isotopic signatures differing between systems, years, outmigration timing, and size. The forecast model performed well, albeit under a limited range of climate variability as well as fairly robust escapements, but it is potentially suitable for forecasting future salmon returns.

Book excerpt: The early marine phase is a critical period for out-migrating juvenile sockeye salmon (Oncorhynchus nerka). They undergo physiological changes while entering into a new environment, and this is thought to be a period of high mortality. This study examined factors affecting swimming depth as juveniles migrated through Rivers Inlet, and compared swimming depth at the point of ocean entry and life history strategies in sockeye salmon from Rivers Inlet and nearby populations on the Central Coast of British Columbia. Most juvenile sockeye salmon swam within two meters of the ocean's surface during their out-migration through Rivers Inlet, and were slightly deeper later in the out-migration. In addition, in a mesocosm experiment, Rivers Inlet juvenile sockeye salmon did not alter their swimming depth in response to increasing salinity at their preferred swimming depth, despite experiencing negative physiological effects when swimming in highly saline waters. Similar data on other nearby sockeye salmon populations were collected. Juvenile sockeye salmon from populations that out-migrate through brackish waters tended to be smaller than individuals from populations that leave fresh water and enter directly into highly saline marine environments, and they too tended swim within the top two to four meters of the surface. This shows that conditions in the top 4 m of the water's surface represent actual conditions experienced by out-migrating juvenile sockeye salmon in the early marine environment and is a critically important observation in terms of understanding such issues as prey availability, the potential role of brackish surface layers in coastal fjords, lagoons and estuaries, and susceptibility to predators. These findings will inform future sampling efforts on these populations, and also suggest that these populations maintain varying life history characteristics which enable them to survive early marine conditions within the top 4 m of the ocean.
