Book excerpt: Stable isotope analysis is a tool employed in ecological studies to provide information on the movement of elements and energy through a system. The stable carbon and nitrogen isotope analysis of aquatic organisms has been commonly used to address questions related to energy transfer between organisms and to identify the reliance of aquatic organisms on different sources of organic matter within the system. Within the rivers, stable isotope analysis has been used to describe food webs and connect conditions within the watershed with the river. The Grand River watershed is a predominantly agricultural watershed which receives inputs from ~26 MWWTP and is managed for flow by multiple large reservoirs and weirs. The stable isotope values of aquatic organisms within this watershed were analyzed from samples collected between May and September, 2007. Sites were selected in relation to three different municipal waste water treatment plants (MWWTP) in the centre of the watershed and along a 200 km stretch of the main stem of the Grand River. Results show that stable isotope analysis can be used to differentiate organisms collected from different sites and which represent different trophic levels within the river system under select conditions. Sites which are influences by inputs from organic matter or nutrients within distinct isotope values can be distinguished easily if the input is large and the isotope values are significantly distinct from background values. For smaller inputs changes in stable isotope values were not observed relative the background variability in the system. In this case, sites should be selected to allow for the characterization the variation in isotope values already occurring within the river. Samples collected later in the growing seasons have more distinctive isotope values are between sites. At sites where seasonal variation is greater, the organisms collected may not show a clear separation between trophic levels. A lack of knowledge regarding the time period represented by the tissues of the organisms challenges interpretation these results. It is concluded that stable isotope values of aquatic organisms reflected the condition of this watershed. For nitrogen increasing loads from point sources were accompanied by increasing isotope values. Stable isotope values decreased over the river reach where recovery in river condition occurs as a result of ground water inputs. The influence of individual large MWWTP and reservoirs was observable and the management of the MWWTP and reservoir appears to affect the changes in isotope values which are observed.

Six reservoirs located in the mainstream of the Wujiang River and their corresponding inflow/outflow rivers were selected for inclusion in this study, which was conducted by researchers from the Institute of Geochemistry, Chinese Academy of Sciences. The concentration and distribution of Hg in reservoirs (the water column, sediment, sediment pore water), inflow/outflow rivers of reservoirs, and wet deposition in Wujiang River Basin were systematically investigated, and measurements were taken of the water/air exchange flux of gaseous elemental mercury (GEM). On the basis of the data gathered, a detailed mass balance of total mercury (THg) and methylmercury (MeHg) in the six reservoirs was developed. In addition, the book identifies the primary factors controlling Hg methylation in the river-reservoir system in Wujiang River Basin. The accumulation and bio-magnification of Hg species within food chains in reservoirs and human health risk of MeHg exposure through fish consumption are also included in this book.

However, interpretation of isotopic values from predators can be confounded by variability in the stable isotope values of their prey species, which differ spatially and temporally. Some factors affecting stable isotope values include environmental conditions, nitrogen cycling, primary production at the base of the food web, and trophic interactions. Understanding the potential for isotopic variation in common prey species for top predators is necessary for the best use of stable isotope analysis in marine systems and for tracing energy through food webs. In this study, I measured the stable carbon ([delta]13C) and nitrogen ([delta]15N) isotope values in muscle tissue from common mid-trophic level fish and squid species in the eastern Bering Sea over two years to compare values across years and size/age classes. I found interannual changes in the [delta]15N and [delta]13C values between 2014 and 2016 in atka mackerel, Pacific herring, sockeye salmon, squid, and walleye pollock, and variation in the [delta]13C and [delta]15N values across age/size classes in Pacific herring, sockeye salmon, and walleye pollock. I compared my data to those collected from the same size class fish in the Bering Sea in 1997 and found increases in the [delta]15N and decreases in the [delta]13C values consistent with expectations from higher ocean temperatures in 2016 and continued increased inputs of anthropogenic, isotopically light carbon.

An important process which counters this trend toward potential climate change is the removal of carbon dioxide from the surface ocean by photosynthesis. This process packages carbon in phytoplankton which enter the food chain or sink into the deep sea. Their ultimate fate is a `rain' of organic debris out of the surface-mixed layer of the ocean. On a global scale, the mechanisms and overall rate of this process are poorly known. The authors of the 25 papers in this volume present their state-of-the-art approaches to quantifying the mechanisms by which the `rain' of biogenic debris nourishes deep ocean life. Prominent deep sea ecologists, geochemists and modelers address relationships between data and models of carbon fluxes and food chains in the deep ocean. An attempt is made to estimate the fate of carbon in the deep sea on a global scale by summing up the utilization of organic matter among all the populations of the abyssal biosphere. Comparisons are made between these ecological approaches and estimates of geochemical fluxes based on sediment trapping, one-dimensional geochemical models and horizontal (physical) input from continental margins. Planning interdisciplinary enterprises between geochemists and ecologists, including new field programs, are summarized in the final chapter. The summary includes a list of the important gaps in understanding which must be addressed before the role of the deep-sea biota in global-scale processes can be put in perspective.
