Part 2 written by National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 2018-07-05 with total page 34 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The results of an inviscid spatial calculation for a compressible reacting mixing layer are reported. The limit of infinitive activation energy is taken and the diffusion flame is approximated by a flame sheet. Results are reported for the phase speeds of the neutral waves and maximum growth rates of the unstable waves as a function of the parameters of the problem: the ratio of the temperature of the stationary stream to that of the moving stream, the Mach number of the moving streams, the heat release per unit mass fraction of the reactant, the equivalence ratio of the reaction, and the frequency of the disturbance. These results are compared to the phase speeds and growth rates of the corresponding nonreacting mixing layer. We show that the addition of combustion has important, and complex effects on the flow stability. Jackson, T. L. and Grosch, C. E. Unspecified Center NAS1-18107; NAS1-18605; RTOP 505-90-21-01...

This book was released on 2003-10-23 with total page 465 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The study of hydrodynamic stability is fundamental to many subjects, ranging from geophysics and meteorology through to engineering design. This treatise covers both classical and modern aspects of the subject, systematically developing it from the simplest physical problems, then progressing chapter by chapter to the most complex, considering linear and nonlinear situations, and analysing temporal and spatial stability. The authors examine each problem both analytically and numerically: many chapters end with an appendix outlining relevant numerical techniques. All relevant fluid flows are treated, including those where the fluid may be compressible, or those from geophysics, or those that require salient geometries for description. Details of initial-value problems are explored equally with those of stability. As a result, the early transient period as well as the asymptotic fate for perturbations for a flow can be assessed. The text is enriched with many exercises, copious illustrations and an extensive bibliography and the result is a book that can be used with courses on hydrodynamic stability or as an authoritative reference for researchers.

This book was released on 1990 with total page 144 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This dissertation investigates the behavior of both unbounded and bounded compressible plane mixing layers with respect to two- and three-dimensional, spatially growing wave disturbances using linear stability analysis. The mixing layer is formed by two parallel streams with different gases and the flow is assumed to be inviscid and non-reacting. For unbounded mixing layers, the effects of the free-stream Mach number, velocity ratio, temperature ratio, gas constant (molecular weight) ratio and the ratios of specific heats on the linear spatial instability characteristics of a mixing layer are determined. A nearly universal dependence of the normalized maximum amplification rate on the convective Mach number is found for two-dimensional spatially growing disturbances. The effects of the mean flow profiles on the instability behavior of the mixing layers are also studied. It is shown that decreasing the thickness of the total temperature profile relative to the mean velocity profile, or adding a wake component in the mean velocity profile can make the normalized amplification rate decrease slower as the convective Mach number increases for both subsonic and supersonic convective Mach numbers. For an unbounded mixing layer with subsonic convective Mach numbers, there is only one unstable mode propagating with a phase velocity C* sub pm approx. = to the isentropically estimated convective velocity of the large scale structures u* sub c. As the convective Mach number approaches or exceeds unity, there are always two unstable spatial modes. (edc).
