Book Synopsis Rediscovering Europe in the Netherlands by :
Download or read book Rediscovering Europe in the Netherlands written by and published by Amsterdam University Press. This book was released on 2007 with total page 180 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 2005, the Dutch referendum on whether to ratify the treaty establishing a European constitution dramatically exposed the rift between political and public opinion in European policymaking. Additionally, the referendum demonstrated that politicians had failed to function as adequate links between Europe as an entity and its Dutch citizens. Against this turbulent background, the authors analyze the European Union’s relative lack of legitimacy in the Netherlands and advise how its image might earn more popular appeal by going beyond traditional institutional approaches.
Book Synopsis International Public Opinion and the Bosnia Crisis by : Eric Shiraev
Download or read book International Public Opinion and the Bosnia Crisis written by Eric Shiraev and published by Lexington Books. This book was released on 2003 with total page 368 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Does public opinion matter in international conflict resolution? Does national foreign policy remain independent of public opinion and the media? International Public Opinion and the Bosnia Crisis examines, through U.S., Canadian, and European case studies, how public reaction impacted democratic governments' response to the ethnic and religious conflict in Bosnia during the period from 1991-1997. Each case study offers an overview of the national media coverage and public reaction to the war in the former Yugoslavia and examines the links between public opinion and political and military intervention in Bosnia. The result is a comprehensive evaluation of the complex relationship between public opinion, media coverage, and foreign policy decision-making.

Book excerpt: The relationship between democracy and foreign policy has always been controversial. Whether good or bad, the influence of public opinion - a central factor in all democracies - on political decisionmaking in matters of war and peace is more important than ever. How has the end of the Cold War affected popular attitudes in Western Europe and the USA? Is the public no longer willing to tolerate military casualties, or is that a myth that serves as a welcome alibi for hesitant politicians?

This means that the Dutch government needs to be alert in its response to the risks and opportunities presented by a rapidly changing world. Addressing this issue, the Scientific Council for Government Policy (wrr) offers some reflections in this report, guided by the question how the Netherlands can develop a foreign policy strategy that matches the changing power relations in the world and the radically changed character of international relations. The answer to this question is a reorientation. This means making transparent choices, making smarter use of Europe as our dominant arena, and, finally, choosing an approach that makes better use of the growing role of non-state actors. The report's recommendations not only underline the necessity of reorientation but also show how this could be accomplished in practice.

Is the argument that it is in a state of terminal decline accurate or rooted in only partial understandings of its changing character? The contributors examine the foreign ministry in thirteen member states and draw conclusions that challenge some conventional wisdoms.

Book Synopsis Realism and Moralism in International Relations by : Janse de Jonge
Download or read book Realism and Moralism in International Relations written by Janse de Jonge and published by Martinus Nijhoff Publishers. This book was released on 2023-09-29 with total page 316 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Professor Frans Alting von Geusau held the chair of Professor of International Organizations at Tilburg University. His life-long academic and distinguished career is reflected in this book. He has long inspired others with his insistence that political realism can only be matched with a sense of ethical purpose. This moral dimension of international relations is one of the main themes of the 23 contributions. Academics from the United States, the UK, Israel, The Netherlands and other European countries give their view of a world which faces the challenges of the next millennium. Those who share von Geusau's deep interest in the cultural and moral dimensions of international relations will find excellent essays on this issue in this book. Those who want to enlarge their views on the (uncertain) future of a united Europe will find inspiring ideas and visions in this book. This book demonstrates that what really matters is righteousness and justice for all.
