Book excerpt: This second edition of An Introduction to the New Testament provides readers with pertinent material and a helpful framework that will guide them in their understanding of the New Testament texts. Many new and diverse cultural, historical, social-scientific, sociorhetorical, narrative, textual, and contextual studies have been examined since the publication of the first edition, which was in print for twenty years. The authors retain the original tripartite arrangement on 1) The world of the New Testament, 2) Interpreting the New Testament, and 3) Jesus and early Christianity. An appropriate book for anyone who seeks to better understand what is involved in the exegesis of New Testaments texts today.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from St. Paul's Epistles to the Thessalonians: With a Critical and Grammatical Commentary, and a Revised Translation If I may venture to assume that this is really the case, I cannot help feeling that it is to be attributed not only to increased experience, but also to the cautious but somewhat freer admixture of exegesis which two of the three Epistles' contained in the volume seemed more especially to require. This slight modification, and so to say dilution, of the critical and grammatical severity which distinguished the earlier parts of the work has been continued in the present volume, but it has been done both watchfully and cautiously, and will be really seen more in the way of slight addition than in actual change. Time and experience both seem to show that the system of interpretation that I have been enabled to pursue is substantially sound, that plain and patient accu racy in detail does in most cases lead to hopeful results, and serves not unfrequently to guide us to far loftier and more ennobling views of the Word of Life than such an unpre tending method might at first prepare us to expect. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from St. Paul's Epistles to the Thessalonians: The Greek Text With Introduction and Notes The Epistles to the Thessalonians can hardly be said to have received at the hands of English scholars the attention they deserve, in view not only Of their own intrinsic interest, but of the place which they occupy in the Sacred Canon. They are generally believed to be the earliest Of St Paul's extant Epistles, and, if so, are, in all probability, the Oldest Christian documents of importance that have come down to us. Certainly no other of the Pauline writings give us a clearer idea Of the character Of the Apostle's missionary preaching, or present a more living picture Of the surroundings Of the primitive Christian Church. A detailed study Of their contents is essential, therefore, to a proper understanding Of the Apostolic Age, and forms the best introduction to the more developed interpretation Of Christian thought, which we are accustomed to describe as Paulinism. This must be made the excuse for the length at which certain subjects bearing on St Paul's language and teaching as a whole are dealt with in the Introduction, and also for the numerous references to recent literature dealing with these points, which will be found especially in the foot-notes. Writing as I have had to do far from a Library, the difficulty I have experienced in keeping abreast of the advances of modern scholarship has led me to believe that those similarly Situated may be glad to be directed to the sources where they are most likely to find help.
