This book was released on 2017-10-28 with total page 198 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This landmark biography concerns David Brainerd, one of the most successful missionaries to live in the colonial era of North America. Although he lived a short life, perishing at the age of twenty-nine, David Brainerd distinguished himself as a missionary of supreme talent and capacity. Working in the barely charted wildernesses of North America in the early 18th century, his missions aimed to convert the Native American population to the Christian creed. Many converted, partly as Brainerd was capable of preaching sermons in the open air across the untrammeled countryside. After his missions lasted a little over three years, David was already famous for his successes. Overcoming fears of the Native Americans, he established whole communities of converts, and received several offers of work in large, existing churches in the safer, colonial towns. In rejecting these, he expresses his desire to keep converting the multitude of heathens naive to the greatness of God. A sensitive soul, David Brainerd suffered from a form of intermittent but severe depression, which was compounded by his lack of company in the wilderness. At times he was malnourished, and his mental and physical condition would become so poor that he was immobile. Eventually illness forced him to give up his ministry; retiring home, he was informed by a doctor that he had tuberculosis, and died in pain only a few months later. Brainerd's brief life, beset with struggles, was considered inspirational by many Christians. This biography, by Jonathan Edwards, is adapted from the journal that Brainerd kept throughout his life.

Book Synopsis The Life of St. Paul by : Lawrence Boadt
Download or read book The Life of St. Paul written by Lawrence Boadt and published by Paulist Press. This book was released on 2008 with total page 136 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This engaging, highly readable biography of St. Paul is an introduction to his thought and the major events of his life. In short simple chapters, the book covers not only the facts of Paul's life known to us through Scripture, but also the fascinating legends told by the early church about this key figure in the development of Christianity. The book is illustrated throughout with four-color paintings highlighting Paul's tumultuous life. These arresting pictures blend the "naive style" of painting, which is strikingly similar to the teaching-style art of the eleventh century, with the artist's own deep love of quilting. The charming result evokes the tradition of the great icons, transforming the book from a simply wonderful introduction to Paul to a truly wonderful gift. Together, text and art combine to make this unique presentation of St. Paul's life a written and visual delight for everyone. Book jacket.

Book Synopsis Preparing for Death, Remembering the Dead by : Tarald Rasmussen
Download or read book Preparing for Death, Remembering the Dead written by Tarald Rasmussen and published by Vandenhoeck & Ruprecht. This book was released on 2015-04-22 with total page 378 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Death and dying were not in the main focus of the denominational conflicts of the 16th century. However, pious literature covered these topics again and again, not only before the Reformation, but after it as well. Here, certain denominational differences are clearly visible. Partly, these differences consist in the use of genres: For example, funeral sermons are an often used genre among Lutherans, while they are much rarer in the Reformed tradition. Similar differences can be observed concerning epitaphs. In Roman Catholic areas, funeral sermons and epitaphs are common in the 16th century, too; but their religious function is often a different from the one in Lutheranism. Beyond such interdenominational differences, there are also interesting continuities and connections which the contributors of the volume analyze. For example, there is a certain continuity between 16th century Lutheran funeral sermons and the late medieval tradition of ars moriendi. The volume contains papers presented at the Second RefoRC Conference in Oslo in 2012, and is characterized by a multiconfessional and multidisciplinary approach, with contributions from Church History, Art History, Archaeology, History of Literature and Cultural History. Within a field of research dominated by specialized contributions (e.g. on ars moriendi traditions or on specific traditions of funeral monuments and funeral sermons), the broad approach of this volume may further stimulate to comparative and cross-confessional reflection.
