Book excerpt: The most comprehensive Yup'ik dictionary in existence, the second edition of this important work now adds extensive research on Central Alaskan Yup'ik, enhancing the forty years of research done by Steven A. Jacobson on the Yup'ik language and dialects. Over these decades, Jacobson has combed through records of explorers, linguists, missionaries, and anyone who has come in contact with the actively migratory Yup'ik people. Combined with information from native Yup'ik speakers, that research has led to a richly detailed dictionary that covers the entire language and all its dialects. The dictionary also offers sections on Yup'ik spelling, early vocabulary, demonstrative words, and important intersections of Yup'ik language and culture such as the kayak, dogsled, parka, and old-style dwellings.

Book excerpt: The study provides a description of the verbal derivational suffixation, postinflectional derivation, enclitics, and particles of the Central Siberian Yupik Eskimo language as spoken on St. Lawrence Island, Alaska and on the coast of Chukotka, in the Soviet Union. It also shows how these elements participate in a network of four tightly-knit grammatical susbsystems (verbal derivational suffixation; discourse enclitics; inflectional verbs moods; and adverbial and conjunctional particles borrowed from Chukchi, a neighboring Paleo-Siberian language), presents implications of the relationships among these subsystems for the theory of autolexical syntax and the theory of language change (particularly concerning contact-induced morphological and syntactic change in a polysynthetic language), and documents the history and sociolinguistics of grammatical and lexical influence of Chukchi on the Eskimo and Bering Sea area. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The culmination of forty years of research, The Language of the Inuit maps the geographical distribution and linguistic differences between the Eskaleut and Inuit languages and dialects. Providing details about aspects of comparative phonology, grammar, and lexicon as well as Inuit prehistory and historical evolution, Louis-Jacques Dorais shows the effects of bilingualism, literacy, and formal education on Inuit language and considers its present status and future. An enormous task, masterfully accomplished, The Language of the Inuit is not only an anthropological and linguistic study of a language and the broad social and cultural contexts where it is spoken but a history of the language's speakers.
Book Synopsis The Languages of Native North America by : Marianne Mithun
Download or read book The Languages of Native North America written by Marianne Mithun and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2001-06-07 with total page 800 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides an authoritative survey of the several hundred languages indigenous to North America. These languages show tremendous genetic and typological diversity, and offer numerous challenges to current linguistic theory. Part I of the book provides an overview of structural features of particular interest, concentrating on those that are cross-linguistically unusual or unusually well developed. These include syllable structure, vowel and consonant harmony, tone, and sound symbolism; polysynthesis, the nature of roots and affixes, incorporation, and morpheme order; case; grammatical distinctions of number, gender, shape, control, location, means, manner, time, empathy, and evidence; and distinctions between nouns and verbs, predicates and arguments, and simple and complex sentences; and special speech styles. Part II catalogues the languages by family, listing the location of each language, its genetic affiliation, number of speakers, major published literature, and structural highlights. Finally, there is a catalogue of languages that have evolved in contact situations.

Book Synopsis A Grammar of Central Alaskan Yupik (CAY) by : Osahito Miyaoka
Download or read book A Grammar of Central Alaskan Yupik (CAY) written by Osahito Miyaoka and published by Walter de Gruyter. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 1712 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The volume is a major grammar of Central Alaskan Yupik (CAY). It is the culmination of the author's linguistic studies done in Alaska and elsewhere since around 1960, with assistance of many native speakers. Central Alaskan Yupik is currently the most vigorous of the nineteen remaining Native Alaskan languages. Descriptive in nature, extensive and deep, this grammar is of typological and of ethnological/anthropological interest. Given the severely endangered state of the language, this much of descriptive linguistic material is without comparison in the field.

Book excerpt: "Inupiatun Uqaluit Taniktun Sivuni ""it/Inupiaq to English Dictionary, "with approximately 19,000 entries (word stems, suffixes, and endings) and thirty-one appendices, is a rich cultural and linguistic resource of the Inupiaq language, the ancestral language of approximately five thousand Inupiat who live in eight villages on the North Slope of Alaska. Of the dictionary s thirty-one appendices, twenty-four contain lists of terms from different categories, including: kin terms, ice and snow terms, temporal terms, names of constellations, ocean currents, and winds, area references, spatial terms, an explanation of the Inupiat counting system (also a list of cardinal and ordinal numbers), Inupiaq personal names, names of plants and animals (including mammals, insects, birds, fish, molluscs, and crustaceans), a list of exclamations, and names of the seasons/months. The other seven appendices are illustrations of an umiak, a kayak, a bowhead whale, a human skull, a human skeleton, and a traditional sod house. The various parts of each item are identified and named. "
