Book excerpt: It is a pleasure to write a few words of introduction to an admirable translation of some interesting “Sermons of St. Bernard” made by one of the Community of St. Mary’s, York. The sermons are nineteen in number, and are all of them related to the mysteries of Advent and Christmas. Of the seven sermons, De Adventu Domini, printed in Dom Mabillon’s edition of the saint’s works, we have here the first two. Then follow the four homilies on the text Missus est, etc. This is the title that is generally given to these famous sermons, but the holy preacher himself intended them to be called De laudibus Virginis Matris, as we read in his letter to Peter the Deacon. Of the six discourses for the Vigil of Christmas, the translator has selected the first, the fourth, and the sixth. All the five sermons on Christmas Day are given. The volume ends with two on the Circumcision and three on the Epiphany. Aeterna Press

Book excerpt: On the anniversary of the dedication of the monastery church at Clairvaux, Saint Bernard spoke to the community to explain the meaning of the feast: “What sanctity can these stones have that we should celebrate their festival? They do indeed have sanctity, but it is because of your bodies. . . . Your bodies are holy because of your souls, and this house is holy because of your bodies.”The thirty-eight sermons in this volume carry forth this theme, revealing the holiness of the monastic life as monks alternate through the rhythm of the day and the year between the opus Dei and manual labor, journeying faithfully through life to death and the transitus to glory. The twelfth-century Ecclesiastica Officia of the Cistercian Order required abbots to speak formally to their communities in chapter on seventeen fixed days, mostly liturgical feasts. This volume witnesses to Bernard’s fulfillment of this requirement and includes sermons for the Assumption and Nativity of the Virgin and the Feast of All Saints, sermons devoted to the feasts of particular saints celebrated during the autumn months, sermons for the time of harvest, and funeral sermons that look forward to the eternal joy in the communion of saints.

Book excerpt: The twelfth-century abbot and contemplative known to history as The Mellifluous Teacher' wrote sermons for the entire Christmas liturgical cycle -- from the first Sunday of Advent (four weeks before Christmas) to the Feast of the Purification of the Virgin Mary/Presentation of Christ in the Temple (2 February). As he reflects on the wonder of the Incarnation, he reminds Christians still today that Christmas celebrates the awesome condescension of God-with-us, not a commercial carnival.

Book excerpt: Advent and Christmas sermons to remind us of Christ incarnate and Christ with usExperience the profound reflections on the Christmas mysteries of one of Christianity's greatest contemplative's, the twelfth-century theologian St. Bernard of Clairvaux. In these sermons which span the first Sunday of Advent to the Feast of St. Paul (Jan. 25) Bernard explores the biblical texts relating to the birth of Christ and the miraculous events which accompanied it.Known as "The Mellifious Teacher," for the sweetness of his sermons, Bernard irresistibly draws in his audience to ponder the mysteries of the Messiah's first advent, not to explain the answer every question about the cosmic mystery of Jesus's birth.re: SOURCE Publishing creates modern digital books from classic works at bargain pricing. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The sermons of Bernard of Clairvaux evoke the inner conversion of the human person who is open to the Word/words, the external conversion that is submission to the obedience of community life, and, finally, the personal recognition of the true nature of the divine Word. This volume contains Saint Bernard's sermons for the liturgical seasons of Lent and Easter. Included are sermons for the Purification, Septuagesima, the feast of Saint Benedict, and the feast of the Annunciation, all of which are interpreted by Bernard in light of the paschal mystery. In the sermons for Lent, especially, one gets to know a more hesitant and searching Bernard than appears in his other liturgical sermons. This volume is the third of a projected five volumes of Bernard's liturgical sermons.

Conversion is used here not in the modern sense of transferring from one ecclesiastical body to another, but in the patristic and monastic sense of metanoia, turning one's entire being wholly to God.

Book excerpt: Hope is an endangered virtue in today’s chaotic world. Yet Christmas provides us with the inspiring reminder that our true hope lies not in the understanding that people can sometimes be good, but that God, who is good, is also faithful and loves us in our unloveliness and graces us in our gracelessness. In a unique guide for Christian travelers, Scott Mages marries the fascinating story of the figures that surround the infant Jesus in that inescapable seasonal tableau of shepherds and wise men, as told through the bible, folk tales, and art, with reflections on the enduring meanings of each. While addressing Christian curiosities like why so many manger scenes display Joseph with staff and lantern and where in the scripture we can find the ox and ass who preceded Mary in artists’ renditions, Mages leads others through the history of the figures of the crèche and their lessons while offering a spiritual preparation for Christmas. Shared for the curious and pious, lovers of odd facts and forgotten legends, and seekers of more than the glitz that often passes for Christmas, A Place for Jesus guides Christians on an inspiring journey to learn and understand the lessons surrounding the figures of the crèche.
