Book excerpt: It is our good fortune that we are able to celebrate the one thousandth birth anniversary of the great Acharya, Sri Ramanuja, by bringing out this illustrated biography. Illustratrations are by Shanthi Chandrasekar, a Maryland artist who has been drawing and painting since early childhood. Her interest in understanding different media has led her to experiment with drawing, painting, sculpture, photography, printmaking and papermaking. She has also been trained in the traditional art forms of Kolam and Tanjore Style painting. While many of her works are influenced by her Indian heritage, her true inspiration comes from the mystery and majesty of the world around her; her muse lives where the scientific overlaps with the spiritual. Shanthi?s works have been displayed in a variety of locations through the Washington D.C. area, New York City and India. She has won the Maryland State Arts Council Individual Artist Award 2013 and 2016 for Works on Paper. She was awarded the Individual Artist grants from the Arts and Humanities Council of Montgomery County, MD in 2009, 2013 and 2016. She also won the Maryland Traditions Master Apprentice Award to teach Kolam drawing in 2010. Her work has been purchased by the DC Art Bank from 2013-16 to add to their collection. More recently, she has ventured into book illustration and has illustrated for the Unitarian Universalist Association?s Katha Sagar: Ocean of Stories. She is currently the Exhibits Cordinator for the galleries at the Takoma Park Community Center. She works from her studio at Studio B, 7475 Wisconsin Avenue, Bethesda, Maryland. The text is by Anya Iyengar, who is a professor of Language Arts I the California State University system. She is an avid student of Indian history and has published articles on the Indian diaspora in the United States. She lives with her family in Northern California.

Book excerpt: Rare and blessed is the occasion when a saint, an illumined soul, Swami Ramakrishnananda, a direct-disciple of Sri Ramakrishna, undertakes the task of writing a biography of an Acharya, a world-teacher, Sri Ramanuja. No writer, however erudite and accomplished, can bring to his work that revealing insight which a saint does by virtue of his illumination. From this point of view, the biography of Sri Ramanuja in Bengali, authored by Swami Ramakrishnananda, is a unique work. Whether one belongs to the ranks of orthodox followers or to those of the heterodox, going through the pages of this book, one would surely feel the devotional fervour the author had for Sri Ramanuja. The book was translated into English by Swami Buddhananda, Interspersed with more than 150 colour photographs, annotated with many additional notes, and additional material appended, this new edition of the book, brought out to commemorate Sri Ramanuja’s 1000th Birth Year, will surely communicate the transforming power of the great life of a mighty and magnanimous world-teacher written by an illustrious apostle of another great world-teacher.

Book excerpt: Indira Parthasarathy's Tamil play 'Ramanujar' was awarded the Saraswati Samman by the K.K. Birla Foundation in 1999 for promoting an understanding of the contemporary relevance of the renowned Vaishnava acharya of medieval India. The English translation by T. Sriraman and the accompanying critical apparatus by C.T. Indra make the play accessible to a wider audience for the first time. The book presents the saint not only as an exponent of the Visishtaadvaidic philosophy, but even more strikingly as a radical social reformer with an inclusive vision. The Epilogue, a playlet included in the present edition, presents an imaginary meeting of the aged renunciant with his long-separated wife. The searching questions she poses make the savant reflect upon and evaluate himself, his past, and the impact he has made on society.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Life and Teachings of Sri Ramanujacharya The last stroke was still upon the air, when there came a knock at the study door, and roused the author from his deep reverie, back to the world and its sorrows. One more hour, cried-he, another messenger of Time, posting from the dark realms of the Future, on to the regions of the Dead Past. The world has grown older by an hour and I no wiser. With that, there strode into the room. All unbidden, the impatient visitor. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this compelling social history, William R. Pinch tackles one of the most important but most neglected fields of the colonial history of India: the relation between monasticism and caste. The highly original inquiry yields rich insights into the central structure and dynamics of Hindu society—insights that are not only of scholarly but also of great political significance. Perhaps no two images are more associated with rural India than the peasant who labors in an oppressive, inflexible social structure and the ascetic monk who denounces worldly concerns. Pinch argues that, contrary to these stereotypes, North India's monks and peasants have not been passive observers of history; they have often been engaged with questions of identity, status, and hierarchy—particularly during the British period. Pinch's work is especially concerned with the ways each group manipulated the rhetoric of religious devotion and caste to further its own agenda for social reform. Although their aims may have been quite different—Ramanandi monastics worked for social equity, while peasants agitated for higher social status—the strategies employed by these two communities shaped the popular political culture of Gangetic north India during and after the struggle for independence from the British.

Book excerpt: "Indira Parthasarathy's Tamil play Ramanujar, which won the K.K. Birla Foundation's Saraswati Samman in 1999, presents the medieval Vaishnava acharya not only as an exponent of the Visishtadvaidic philosophy but even more strikingly as a radical social reformer with an inclusive vision. The play strives to demonstrate that he redefined the very idea of a Vaishnava. The play also takes a balanced view of the hagiographic and historical accounts on the controversial events in his long life, such as Chola persecution, Ramanuja's exile, conversion of the Hoysala King from Jainism, and the meeting with the Delhi Sultan. The Epilogue, a playlet included in this new edition, presents an imaginary meeting of the aged renunciant with his long-separated wife. The searching questions she poses make the savant reflect upon and evaluate himself, his past and the impact he has made on society. The present translation of the play including the Epilogue, makes the work available to a wider audience. The Introduction and Commentary point out how Indira Parthasarathy employs the traditional hagiographic accounts as a critical tool to probe issues of social and religious amity and gender equity"--
