Book excerpt: Excerpt from Spun Yarns of a Naval Officer I Have heartily to thank the distinguished officers, with whom it has been my pleasures to serve, for according me the use of their photographs for publication as a recuerdo of such service. The burden of war conditions on actual publication has, unfortunately, led to the reduction of most interesting subject-matter and yarns, which, however, I hope to publish in a supplementary volume later on. It is said when a naval officer takes to agriculture, "He farms his nobles into ninepences," And his ninepences into nothing." To justify that, substituting publishing for agriculture, I will at once get on the land slide by undertaking that one-third of my net profits, if any, on the book will be devoted to Naval and Military War Charities, and, if I may venture to say, at the discretion of the distinguished officer to whom the book is dedicated. War conditions have rendered the Preface necessary, but "we are out to get things done," and therefore crave your indulgence. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Published in the months leading up to the Battle of Jutland, W.M. James’ New Battleship Organisations, was the ultimate guide to command and organization of every aspect of a modern First World War capital ship. The book provides a unique, and highly revealing, insight into life aboard ship, the mechanics of command, seamanship, the issuing of orders, and the broad expectations placed upon British naval officers. Specific sections are dedicated to the organization of watches, the division of work (from fellow officers right through the ship’s company to the ratings), naval routine, parades, anchor and cable work, coaling and right down to the organization of chapel, on-board shops, cleaning and even the ship’s barbers. A series of detailed tables, diagrams and humorous cartons accompany the lucid, period language of the First World War Senior Service and provide a further glimpse below-decks that will appeal to social and family historians, and anyone with a general or specialist interest in naval history. The book, re-published here by the Pool of London Press as The Royal Navy Officer’s Jutland Pocket-Manual 1916, marks the centenary of the First World War’s most famous, and deadly naval encounter.
Book Synopsis To Swear like a Sailor by : Paul A. Gilje
Download or read book To Swear like a Sailor written by Paul A. Gilje and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2016-02-15 with total page 409 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Anyone could swear like a sailor! Within the larger culture, sailors had pride of place in swearing. But how they swore and the reasons for their bad language were not strictly wedded to maritime things. Instead, sailor swearing, indeed all swearing in this period, was connected to larger developments. This book traces the interaction between the maritime and mainstream world in the United States while examining cursing, language, logbooks, storytelling, sailor songs, reading, images, and material goods. To Swear Like a Sailor offers insight into the character of Jack Tar - the common seaman - and into the early republic. It illuminates the cultural connections between Great Britain and the United States and the appearance of a distinct American national identity. The book explores the emergence of sentimental notions about the common man - through the guise of the sailor - appearing on stage, in song, in literature, and in images.
