Book Synopsis Spatial Analysis Methods and Practice by : George Grekousis
Download or read book Spatial Analysis Methods and Practice written by George Grekousis and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2020-06-11 with total page 535 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is an introductory textbook on spatial analysis and spatial statistics through GIS. Each chapter presents methods and metrics, explains how to interpret results, and provides worked examples. Topics include: describing and mapping data through exploratory spatial data analysis; analyzing geographic distributions and point patterns; spatial autocorrelation; spatial clustering; geographically weighted regression and OLS regression; and spatial econometrics. The worked examples link theory to practice through a single real-world case study, with software and illustrated guidance. Exercises are solved twice: first through ArcGIS, and then GeoDa. Through a simple methodological framework the book describes the dataset, explores spatial relations and associations, and builds models. Results are critically interpreted, and the advantages and pitfalls of using various spatial analysis methods are discussed. This is a valuable resource for graduate students and researchers analyzing geospatial data through a spatial analysis lens, including those using GIS in the environmental sciences, geography, and social sciences.
Book Synopsis Research Design for Social Work and the Human Services by : Jeane W. Anastas
Download or read book Research Design for Social Work and the Human Services written by Jeane W. Anastas and published by Columbia University Press. This book was released on 2000-01-28 with total page 618 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Research Design for Social Work and the Human Services integrates a range of research techniques into a single epistemological framework and presents a balanced approach to the teaching of research methods in the "helping professions." Jeane W. Anastas begins with a discussion of the different philosophical perspectives within which social research occurs and continues with problem formulation, research design, and methodological issues influencing data collection, analysis, and dissemination. She presents both fixed (quantitative) and flexible (qualitative) methods of research, granting legitimacy, value, utility, and relevance to both styles of inquiry. Utilizing complete case studies to illustrate different methodological approaches, Research Design for Social Work and the Human Services integrates material on women and people of color, and draws attention to the ways racism, heterosexism, sexism, and classism affect the conceptualization and conduct of research. Anastas not only exposes these biases but actively addresses the experiences, needs, and concerns of clients of both genders and different races, ethnicities, sexual orientations, cultures, and classes.

Book Synopsis Wildlife Study Design by : Michael L. Morrison
Download or read book Wildlife Study Design written by Michael L. Morrison and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2008-03-21 with total page 412 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We developed the first edition of this book because we perceived a need for a compilation on study design with application to studies of the ecology, conser- tion, and management of wildlife. We felt that the need for coverage of study design in one source was strong, and although a few books and monographs existed on some of the topics that we covered, no single work attempted to synthesize the many facets of wildlife study design. We decided to develop this second edition because our original goal – synthesis of study design – remains strong, and because we each gathered a substantial body of new material with which we could update and expand each chapter. Several of us also used the first edition as the basis for workshops and graduate teaching, which provided us with many valuable suggestions from readers on how to improve the text. In particular, Morrison received a detailed review from the graduate s- dents in his “Wildlife Study Design” course at Texas A&M University. We also paid heed to the reviews of the first edition that appeared in the literature.
Book Synopsis The Enterprise of Education by : Kagendo Mutua
Download or read book The Enterprise of Education written by Kagendo Mutua and published by IAP. This book was released on 2007-10-01 with total page 372 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Enterprise of Education is Book IV of the research series, Research on Education in Africa, the Caribbean and the Middle East. This book examines the implications of rapid political, sociocultural, and economic change for the enterprise of education within particular countries in the regions of Africa, the Caribbean, and the Middle East—all of which have cultural ties. It provides a space for a critical dialogue about the impact of global issues on the enterprise of education in specific locales or regions within a specific country. Finally, the book identifies trends in the enterprise of education that are occurring across the regions. The Enterprise of Education draws from recent research, summarizing, interpreting, and making connections to address issues/questions that are central to the enterprise of education today in these three world regions. Among the specific questions/issues that are considered include the following: How is the enterprise of education addressing and including the needs of all children including those who are squatters, new immigrants, have special education needs, and who are voiceless in their society? What social structures in these regions mitigate against student learning, especially particular groups of students? What research methodologies enable us to investigate the enterprise of education in these world regions? What role does the learning environment play in schools? Who creates curriculum, and for what purposes? Which issues are found to a greater or lesser extent in education in other world regions? What role do parents play, in economic and social support of schools? How can teachers best be prepared for effective teaching?
