Download or read book Mapping Travel written by Jordana Dym and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2021-08-30 with total page 141 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Drawing on a thousand years of European travel writing and mapmaking, Dym suggests that after centuries of text-based itineraries and on-the spot directions guiding travelers and constituting their reports, maps in the fifteenth century emerged as tools for Europeans to support and report the results of land and sea travel. With each succeeding generation, these linear journey maps have become increasingly common and complex, responding to changes in forms of transportation, such as air and motor car ‘flight’ and print technology, especially the advent of multi-color printing. This is their story.
Book Synopsis The English Atlantic, 1675-1740 by : Ian K. Steele
Download or read book The English Atlantic, 1675-1740 written by Ian K. Steele and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 1986-09-18 with total page 415 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Exploding the curious myth that the ocean is a barrier rather than a highway for communication, this unusual interdisciplinary study examines the English Atlantic context of early American life. From the winterless Caribbean to the ice-locked Hudson Bay, maritime communications in fact usually met the legitimate expectations for frequency, speed, and safety, while increased shipping, new postal services, and newspapers hastened the exchange of news. These changes in avenues of communications reflected--and, in turn, enhanced--the political, economic, and social integration of the English Atlantic between 1675 and 1740. As Steele deftly describes the influence of physical, technological, socioeconomic, and political aspects of seaborne communication on the community, he suggests an exciting new mode of analyzing Colonial history.
Book Synopsis Harp on the Shore by : Willard Hallam Bonner
Download or read book Harp on the Shore written by Willard Hallam Bonner and published by SUNY Press. This book was released on 1985-01-01 with total page 142 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Allusions to the sea permeate Thoreau's writings, enriching many of his basic ideas. Harp on the Shore examines Thoreau's use of maritime metaphor. It shows how he, a writer ordinarily perceived as quintessentially landlocked, came to view the terrestrial world in terms of the oceanic. The book explores both the poetic and the philosophical implications of Thoreau's passion for the sea. Beginning with Thoreau's deep attachment to the sea and maritime life in New England and the ways in which that attachment stimulated his imaginative identification of Concord as a center of maritime activity, it examines the sea voyage as a symbol of man's intellectual processes. The book shows how maritime allusions enlarge the significance of Thoreau's ideas about man's struggle to attain individuality and identity, his notion of Homeric or Edenic man, and his belief in a middle ground where many could and should stand--between the natural and the civilized, the individual and the group.

Book Synopsis The Legend of St Brendan by : Jude Mackley
Download or read book The Legend of St Brendan written by Jude Mackley and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2008-06-30 with total page 366 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Legend of St Brendan is a study of two accounts of a voyage undertaken by Brendan, a sixth-century Irish saint. The immense popularity of the Latin version encouraged many vernacular translations, including a twelfth-century Anglo-Norman reworking of the narrative which excises much of the devotional material seen in the ninth-century Navigatio Sancti Brendani abbatis and changes the emphasis, leaving a recognisably secular narrative. The vernacular version focuses on marvellous imagery and the trials and tribulations of a long sea-voyage. Together the two versions demonstrate a movement away from hagiography towards adventure. Studies of the two versions rarely discuss the elements of the fantastic. Following a summary of authorship, audiences and sources, this comparative study adopts a structural approach to the two versions of the Brendan narrative. It considers what the fantastic imagery achieves and addresses issues raised with respect to theological parallels.
Book Synopsis Select Documents in Canadian Economic History 1783-1885 by : Harold A. Innis
Download or read book Select Documents in Canadian Economic History 1783-1885 written by Harold A. Innis and published by University of Toronto Press. This book was released on 1933-12-15 with total page 769 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This second volume of economic documents resumes the story of the development of Canada as told by contemporary sources. Newspaper accounts of economic forces and factors, contemporary writings by statesmen and business men, poems depicting current situations, official documents—all have been included. The volume divides the period into two eras, 1783-1850 and 1850-85. The basis of classification of entries is by topics and geographic sections. It is hoped that the material which follows will amplify and illustrate the blend of materialistic and non-materialistic factors which has determined the nature of Canadian history and will allow students in Canadian universities to study with some degree of fullness the development of the economic institutions of their native land.
