Book excerpt: Excerpt from Spring Blossoms and Autumn Leaves Oh I what would Grundy say, or Lamb, If, without aid of 'bus or tram, They sought up there their heads to cram All right Excelsior - but d - n The Town Hall Stairs. On resuming his seat, amid shouts of laughter and applause, Alderman Lamb rose to reply, but confessed it required consider able nerve to follow the new councillor. Ben Brierley had made his mark, and the first vacancy found him one of the Free Libraries Committee. His municipal experiences, more especially in connection with the Nuisances Committee, led him to raise the question What shall we do with our poor No man was better qualified to give an opinion on the subject, and the dailies, by ventilating the question, proved that he had hit the right nail on the head. The Artisans' Dwelling Act, although shelved by the Health Committee, was another instance of Brierley's sympathies for the humbler classes and his letter on the Domestic Economy Congress, entitled A Flourish of Trumpets was described by a well-known barrister as a skinner. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Spring Blossoms and Autumn Leaves: A Collection of Poems The gifts of Nature are showered impartially on poor and rich alike; and Poesy - which is essentially the gift of Nature - has stirred with equal force sympathetic hearts in all ranks of life. The well-to-do have the greater advantage in being able to invite attention to their poetic thoughts; but, in Spite of all obstacles untutored singers of the lower classes have made themselves known, though too many have been perforce content to remain the mute inglorious Miltons of their own immediate circles, through lack of opportunity to be heard elsewhere. That the working classes have produced poets to whom the world has listened, the long roll of names in the literary history of Britain, beginning with Burns and Critchley Prince, bears eloquent testimony. Yorkshire has not been silent in the sweet poetic chorus. It has, and has had, sons and daughters whose tongues have been inspired with the fervour of rich imaginations and a strong desire to uphold the cause of truth and justice. In this little book another Yorkshireman, a true son of the soil, places before his fellows, for praise or condemnation, the outpourings of his poetic mind. Like most poets, to whom the advantages of a good education have been denied, Michael Rathmell writes directly from the heart. Without academic polish, his lines have the true ring of manly thought; and if at times the diction is not so euphonious as it might be, or his Pegasus slightly limps when it should amble gracefully along, at least the sentiments are pure and the language is forcible and appropriate. Michael Rathmell was born at Huby, in the parish of Harewood, in the year 1828. In that pie-education age there v'vas no school of any kind in the village. With a mind singularly attracted by the beauties of Nature - and Nature is beautiful in Wharfedale - young Rathmell, as he grew up, soon felt an instinctive longing for the knowledge that books alone can teach. But the acquisition of these was difficult for a poor country lad. Almost unaided he therefore toiled up the steeps of knowledge, picking up, by diligent reading of the books which came in his way, smatterings of many subjects. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Leaves of Spring: Gathered in Autumn A Myrtle Flower. (Dedicated to my Mother.) I Lift the curtain of the past With memory's trembling hand, And in a far-off graveyard gate Among the dead I stand. A landscape leafless, vast and dim, The landscape of long years, Looms on my vision till my heart Bursts into burning tears. Faces, oh, God, how loved! flit by, And one most lily fair Looks on me with her long-lashed eyes, Tossing her golden hair. Lost, oh, forever lost to me! For one soft morn in May Some jealous angels saw her smile, Then beckoned her away. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Flowers by the Wayside O thou who bearest on thy thoughtful face The wearied calm that follows after grief, See how the autumn guides each loosened leaf To sure repose in its own sheltered place. Ah, not forever whirl they in the race Of wild forlornness round the gathered sheaf, Or hurrying onward in a rapture brief Spin o'er the 'moorlands into trackless space. Some hollow captures each; some sheltering wall Arrests the wanderer on its aimless way; The autumn's pensive beauty needs them all, And winter finds them warm, though sere and gray. They nurse young blossoms for the spring's sweet call, And shield new leaflets for the burst of May. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Wild Flower Book: For Young People The little girl who tells this story goes from the city to live in the country with her grandmother. There, through the spring, summer, and the cool, crisp autumn, she roams through woods, meadows and swamps, and sees many things that pique her curiosity. Most often it is the wild flowers she wishes to know about; although she notices the birds, the trees, and even a bullfrog. She sees that the sky changes, and wonders why the dewdrops cling so long to blades of grass. In her own way this little girl writes about these things, using neither botanical terms nor difficult words. The flowers she finds are the ones common throughout the northeastern States of her country, where hundreds of them bloom every year near large cities. Now, however, the rarer flowers are moving to places far away from men's dwellings, because they have been picked so much by those who think little of their preservation. She learns that wild flowers have tender feelings, and that they resent cruel treatment, even though they cannot complain in the language of children.
