Book excerpt: This digital boxed set includes the first four books in the Psychics of Oracle Bay series, more than 850 pages of paranormal romance, puns, gods, demons, angels, and supernatural mysteries. Oracle Bay has always attracted the preternaturally clairvoyant. When anyone with seers’ blood in their veins steps foot in this quaint coastal town, their powers awaken. They receive a visit from the Psychics Union and shenanigans ensue. Not in the Cards: Sandy Franklin is on the run from her old life and her almost-ex-husband. Lured to Oracle Bay when she spots a classified ad for a cheap, coastal apartment above a tarot shop, Sandy signs the lease and gets more than a place to live—a gaggle of wine-drinking, pun-making seers comes part and parcel with her new home and newer abilities. What Sandy didn’t see coming was falling for the man who could destroy Oracle Bay and make her house of cards come tumbling down. First Hand Knowledge: Misty Greene, born and raised in Oracle Bay, is the de facto head of the Psychics Union. She likes to keep busy. She runs her small business empire, organizes the annual Autumn Bazaar, and crafts puns and eerily accurate predictions with her psychic friends. Secrets, a mysterious stranger, and some missing goats push Misty and Joseph McEwan – the town crank, goat farmer, and the constant thorn in Misty’s side since they were in high school – together, then put their romance and their lives in danger. Wing and a Prayer: Andy, a former fallen angel, has been cast out of heaven and hell. Now he’s hiding in plain sight in Oracle Bay. He’s been content to brew award-winning beer, tease the resident psychics, and settle into small-town life. But a Halloween scuffle started by some rowdy angels upsets the delicate balance. Soon his small-town obscurity is threatened by an apocalypse. This time, the world isn’t the only thing on the line – Andy has his heart to guard as well. Belle of the Ball: Drew is recovering from the latest apocalypse and making eyes at his ex-boyfriend Bill, hoping to rekindle their romance. But a pair of mischievous kittens show up and usher in chaos instead. An unusual party atmosphere has descended on the town and the crime rate is skyrocketing. Drew must put on his deerstalker and channel his favorite fictional detectives. With practical jokes, power-theft, and murders stacking up, Drew is getting desperate to stop the crimes before anyone else gets hurt. If he can’t get to the bottom of it soon, he may never get his second chance with Bill.

Book Synopsis Lavender and Red by : Emily K. Hobson
Download or read book Lavender and Red written by Emily K. Hobson and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 2016-10-04 with total page 334 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: LGBT activism is often imagined as a self-contained struggle, inspired by but set apart from other social movements. Lavender and Red recounts a far different story: a history of queer radicals who understood their sexual liberation as intertwined with solidarity against imperialism, war, and racism. This politics was born in the late 1960s but survived well past Stonewall, propelling a gay and lesbian left that flourished through the end of the Cold War. The gay and lesbian left found its center in the San Francisco Bay Area, a place where sexual self-determination and revolutionary internationalism converged. Across the 1970s, its activists embraced socialist and women of color feminism and crafted queer opposition to militarism and the New Right. In the Reagan years, they challenged U.S. intervention in Central America, collaborated with their peers in Nicaragua, and mentored the first direct action against AIDS. Bringing together archival research, oral histories, and vibrant images, Emily K. Hobson rediscovers the radical queer past for a generation of activists today.

Book excerpt: In this colorful and touching story that celebrates what makes each of us unique, a little creature that's not quite a bird and not quite a bunny--it's "neither"--searches for a place to fit in. In the Land of This and That, there are only two kinds: blue bunnies and yellow birds. But one day a funny green egg hatches, and a little creature that's not quite a bird and not quite a bunny pops out. It's neither! Neither tries hard to fit in, but its bird legs aren't good for jumping like the other bunnies, and its fluffy tail isn't good for flapping like the other birds. It sets out to find a new home and discovers a very different place, one with endless colors and shapes and creatures of all kinds. But when a blue bunny and a yellow bird with some hidden differences of their own arrive, it's up to Neither to decide if they are welcome in the Land of All. This colorful, simple, and touching story promotes diversity and offers a valuable lesson to the youngest of audiences: it is our differences that unite us.
Book Synopsis Private Gardens of the Bay Area by : Susan Lowry
Download or read book Private Gardens of the Bay Area written by Susan Lowry and published by The Monacelli Press, LLC. This book was released on 2017-10-17 with total page 257 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Seasoned garden writers Susan Lowry and Nancy Berner, along with leading landscape photographer Marion Brenner, tour more than thirty-five private gardens in the San Francisco Bay Area, illuminating the unrivalled beauty of Northern California—the breadth of the sky, the quality of the light, the sparkle of the Bay, the shapes of the hills—that has beckoned landscape designers and gardeners for generations. Organized geographically—starting with the San Francisco Peninsula, moving north into San Francisco itself, crossing the Bay into Berkeley and Oakland, and finishing in Napa, Sonoma, and Marin—Private Gardens of the Bay Area encompasses an extraordinary range of micro-climates that foster the cultivation of an equally extraordinary range of plants. The kaleidoscope of vigorous plants from five continents bursting out of an Oakland front yard is one kind of garden, the clean-lined contemporary composition of drought-tolerant natives and gravel is another, and the garden tucked into the mountain landscape of oaks, manzanitas, and ceanothus is yet another. This fascinating tour includes gardens such as Green Gables, where the 1911 terraced design by Greene & Greene is meticulously preserved; Big Swing, with a world-renowned collection of salvias; a vertical garden on a vertiginous site in San Francisco by Surfacedesign; and a romantic landscape of lawns, perennial beds, and stately oaks owned by noted collectors and gallerists Gretchen and John Berggruen. Lowry and Berner describe the goals of each garden owner and the principles behind the designs.
