Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Spraying Apples for the Plum-Curculio It has been known for more than a hundred years that t' apple was subject to injury by the plum-curculio, but as this injury has been commonly reckoned less important than that done by the codling - moth, the matter has received, of late, comparatively little attention until within the last six or seven years. Since the dis crimination of different market grades of apples has been generally introduced - a grading based not only upon size and soundness, but also upon superficial appearance - the slight surface injuries done by the new generation of the plum-curculio, both in laying the eggs and in feeding on the fruit, have acquired a great importance. The consequence of a noticeable injury of this sort, although affecting but little, and in many cases scarcely at all, the edible quality of the apple so injured, is to reduce its selling value from N o. I grade to N o. 2, the actual profits of the crop disappearing in this process. These facts having been repeatedly brought to my knowledge by Illinois horticulturists, I undertook to work out the causes of these surface blemishes in general, and to demonstrate more accurately than has hitherto been done means of preventing them by a de struction of the curculios themselves. Indeed, the importance of this investigation has grown upon me as it has become evident that these small superficial injuries very often give entrance through the skin of the apple to bacteria and to fungus spores of various kinds, causing rots and blights of the fruit which might be largely pre vented by a timely destruction of the insects. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Spraying Apples and Pears Against Fungi: February, 1894 The Rot affects the fruit, and sometimes the leaves and young twigs. On the fruit it appears as a brown spot, which soon spreads, often over the whole surface of the fruit. The diseased surface soon becomes covered with many little ash-gray spots or tufts, Which consist of spore stalks bearing innumerable spores. Spraying as yet has not proven very satisfactory as a preventative of the Rot. The diseased fruit should be thoroughly removed as fast as it appears, and destroyed, and it would be well to spray the trees in the spring, before the buds open, with the simple solution of blue vitriol. It is a rule which may be held as applying to all fungus diseases, that all diseased parts should be carefully collected and destroyed by burning. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The codling moth or apple worm and the apple scab have no direct relationship except that both attack the apple and are, respectively, the chief insect enemy and the chief fungous disease of this fruit. Both are, however, subject to practical control by sprays, which being necessary at the same dates, in the main, can be combined in single applications, and it is for this reason that they are considered together in this bulletin. A brief life history is given of the codling moth, with a description of the sprays and other remedies for it, followed by similar matter on the apple scab. The bulletin concludes with a joint consideration, for both pests, of spraying outfits and methods, with directions for the combination of the spray mixtures, and a spray calendar"--Introduction.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Spraying Experiments and Apple Diseases in 1913 As a rule we have found that with the Ben Davis spray injury from bor-deaux mixture was so severe that it equalled or more than offset the beneficial effects derived from the control of apple scab. While a much better grade of fruit from the standpoint of keeping quality and freedom from disease has been the invariable result from trees sprayed with this mate rial the russeted appearance of the skin materially reduced its market value. In other words, while the injurious effects of bordeaux mixture and certain other sprays upon the fruit of susceptible varieties like the Ben Davis are concerned almost wholly with the appearance of the fruit and not with its keep ing quality or value as an article of food the price it will bring on the market is just as effectually reduced as though the lat ter were the case. If the selling price of apples depended more on the quality of the fruit and less on the appearance of the skin certain of the difficulties now experienced in spraying would disappear. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Apple Scab At this time it was not known to the writer that the latter had been suspected by others as the permanent stage of the apple scab fungus. An examination of literature, however, showed that Goethe as early as 1887 had suggested the relationship of the scabs of pears and apples to mature stages on the dead leaves that Bre feld in 1891 figured a temporary spore stage obtained from a Ven turia on pear that was similar to the leaf scab of that plant and that Aderhold, 1894 and later, had made a very comprehensive study of the scabs of apple, pear, and cherry and had connected them with species of Venturias that develop on the dead leaves of these hosts. From the results of these and the writer's investigations there is no doubt that apple scab is merely a parasitic summer stage of a permanent saprophytic fungus occuring on the fallen leaves. It also appears to be this latter form that is largely (in its immature condition) responsible for carrying the fungus through the winter. At least the writer has been unable to find any satisfactory evi dence that the scab stage persists on the young twigs, as has been stated by some investigators, and by means of a new crop of scab spores in the spring spreads the disease to the young fruit and leaves. Neither was there found any evidence that the old spores lived over the winter on the fallen leaves, or that the mycelium in these gave rise to a new crop for spring infection. Book excerpt: This antiquarian volume contains a concise yet comprehensive guide to the various enemies of the orchard, with information on how to prevent and eradicate them. Written in clear, plain language and profusely illustrated, this informative guide will be of considerable utility to the orchard-owner or agriculturalist, and it would make for a worthy addition to collections of allied literature. Although old, much of the information contained herein is still very much relevant today, making this both a great addition to collections of antiquarian literature of this ilk and a useful, practical handbook. Many antiquarian books such as this are increasingly rare and expensive, and it is with this in mind that we are republishing this text now in an affordable, modern edition - complete with a specially commissioned new introduction.
