Book excerpt: In light of the finite supply of fossil fuels, concerns about the impact of combustion engine emissions, and increasing efficiency requirements for on-road vehicles, a search has begun for alternative energy resources. Such fuels would ideally have characteristics such as a high energy density, lower pollutant (hydrocarbon, soot, nitrogen oxide, etc.) emissions, domestic origins, and high miscibility with comparable existing fuels. With the possible exception of lower nitrogen oxide emissions, biodiesel fuel realizes all of these qualities and as such has become a leading candidate to blend with, supplement, or in some cases replace traditional fossil diesel fuel. To facilitate such changes in fuel stock, a comprehensive understanding of biodiesel oxidation chemistry is needed. In the work described herein, the Stanford University Aerosol Shock Tube (AST) was used to measure ignition delay times for six biodiesel surrogate molecules (called Fatty Acid Methyl Esters, or FAMEs) as large as methyl oleate (C19H36O2) at high temperatures (1100-1350 K), moderate pressures (3.5 and 7 atm), and both lean and rich equivalence ratios. This facility was able to make gas-phase measurements of these very-low-vapor-pressure fuels by loading the fuel as a spatially uniform mixture of fuel droplets suspended in an oxidizer/diluent gas blend; the droplets rapidly evaporated behind the incident shock wave. Temperatures behind both incident and reflected shock waves were calculated using a computer code that accounted for the enthalpy loss by the gas as the aerosol droplets changed phase. Moreover, a Fourier Transform InfraRed (FTIR) spectrometer was used to measure the spectra of eleven FAMEs, allowing quantitative fuel measurements during shock experiments. In addition to these aerosol-based experiments, novel shock tube techniques have been developed. The first involves confining the reactive test gas mixture to a small section of the tube using a sliding gate valve (called Constrained Reaction Volume (CRV) experimentation), thus enabling the measurement of ignition chemistry under constant-pressure conditions. The second involves expanding available shock tube test times by filling a low-sound-speed gas near the driver section end cap (called staged driver gas filling) to allow moderate-temperature, low-pressure oxidation experiments. Using these techniques, ignition delay times and time histories of intermediate/product species and temperature were measured during n-heptane (C7H16) oxidation at low temperatures (650-800 K) under constant-pressure conditions near 6.5 atm. The results revealed that many existing biodiesel kinetic mechanisms either under- or over-predict high-temperature ignition times for large biodiesel surrogates; subsequent modifications to high-temperature thermochemistry of biodiesel molecules resulted in more realistic fuel unimolecular decomposition rates and significantly better agreement between model and experiment. Measurements of FAME spectra showed that the absorption cross sections of saturated molecules at 3.39 microns, corresponding to the monochromatic output of a helium-neon (HeNe) laser, can be extrapolated using a simple relationship based on the number of C-H bonds in the molecule. CRV experimentation was shown to almost completely eliminate the pressure changes associated with both first and second stage ignition events during Negative Temperature Coefficient (NTC) region n-heptane oxidation. Comparisons between model and experiment indicated that at low temperatures, constant enthalpy-pressure (H-P) constraints are more appropriate for zero-dimensional shock tube simulations than constant internal energy-volume (U-V) constraints. Finally, the staged driver filling technique was found to increase shock tube test times by approximately 20%, while reducing necessary driver helium consumption by up to about 85%.

Understanding the autoignition behavior of current and future fuels is essential for their clean and efficient use in future energy system. Fuel sprays were injected into a quiescent, pressurized, and preheated air in a constant volume combustion chamber using the Waukesha Fuel Ignition Tester. Autoignition times were determined using the absolute pressure rise and rate of pressure rise within the combustion chamber. Data for potential biofuels has been obtained in the different temperature range of 680 K to 820K and at a pressure of 24 bar. The experimental results provided the Derived Cetane Number (DCN) of the fuel or blend. The DCN is a valuable metric in classifying the about ignition propensity of a fuel. A representative correlation for the DCN as a function of a fuel volumetric blending ratio has been provided where appropriate. Additionally, the exhaust emissions of the different biofuels have also been studied using non-dispersive infrared analyzers for species like CO, CO2, O2, & HC. A chemiluminescence detector was used to measure NOx emissions. A global equivalence ratio of the fuel or blend was derived from the exhaust gas analysis. Using the global equivalence ratio, the experiments were simulated using a zero-dimensional, constant volume, homogenous reactor model with detailed reaction mechanisms. The work focused on biofuels such as n-butanol, methyl decanoate, and biodiesel made at the University of Idaho's biological engineering facility. n-Butanol was chosen for study because it is a potential second-generation biofuel that has certain benefits over ethanol. Methyl decanoate is a fatty acid methyl ester commonly used as a biodiesel surrogate. Biodiesel produced from corn, canola, and soy feedstocks were studied. The fatty acid profiles of the aforementioned biodiesel fuels were known. This rendered an investigation into the influence of the degree of saturation on the autoignition results. This work has a significance to both the lab and field. Results like the DCN representative correlation will be useful in determining what mixture of bio-fuel one can use in a certain system. Moreover, the FIT data can be used as a tool to support the validation of chemical mechanisms. Accurate chemical mechanisms are essential for allowing predictive capability in computational models. A first step towards investigating under what conditions the FIT can support the validation of chemical mechanisms has been done via a rudimentary 0-D , constant volume, reactor model that does not consider any physical effects. In general, the agreement between the experimental results and the simulated are results is fair, but could be improved upon. It has been concluded that the homogenous reactor assumption is not entirely accurate for experiments were the ignition delay is short; this is suspected to be because the physical effects of the fuel spray dominate the autoignition behavior. Comparisons between the experimental results and the 0-D computational model may be valid for results with long ignition delay times. Future work is needed in determining the spray parameters in the FIT and developing a full computational model of the reactor that includes all the effects.

The model's fuel spray characteristics (e.g., velocity) are experimentally validated, and it provides insight, vital to expanding the fuel research capabilities of the IQT, into the complex interaction between fuel spray and combustion processes.

The theoretical model was one-dimensional unsteady and employed a hybrid Eulerian-Lagrangian numerical scheme. Effects of drop size, chemical kinetics, fuel-air ratios, fuel type and other parameters were examined. The results indicated the statistical character of the spray ignition, the existence of optimum droplet size and optimum fuel-air ratio for the minimum ignition delays. The study was extended to the polydisperse spray. The major conclusion was that the polydisperse results can be correlated with an equivalent monodisperse spray represented by a mean diameter based on the total spray surface area. The study of ignition for sprays flowing over a hot plate as initiated. The formulation and the numerical coding were completed. Currently the code is being employed to predict the ignition delays for the flowing sprays. Preliminary experiments were conducted to investigate the ignition of a single droplet stream along a heated surface. The results show an optimal distance from the surface for the droplet stream. It is speculated that this distance depends on the characteristic evaporation time, diffusion time and convective time inherent to the system. Experiments separating the effects are underway to investigate this interactive process. (Author).

However, in actuality, multi-hole injectors spray into direct injection engine cylinders where significant air swirling and tumbling exist to promote fuel atomization and air-fuel mixing, which result in more efficient combustion. For this reason, researchers have begun developing correlations for fuel sprays where a jet of air acts perpendicularly to the fuel spray, also known as a cross airflow or crossflow, so as to more realistically predict fuel spray characteristics in direct injection engines. Accordingly, there is a need for a foundation of experimental data reflecting the specific conditions of fuel spray in cross airflow which can then be used for model validation and future engine design and development. In this study, fuel sprays are characterized with a commercial 8-hole fuel injector in a wind tunnel enclosure capable of cross airflows upwards of 200m/s. Particle image velocimetry was used to measure air velocities and capture pulsed spray events of biodiesel, diesel, and biodiesel-diesel blend fuels. Spray images were processed and analyzed in LaVision's DaVis and in MATLAB to calculate spray penetration length and axis deflection angle under varying cross airflow velocities, fuel injection pressures, and fuel types. Results show that strong cross airflows can decrease spray penetration by up to 44% and deflect the spray axis by up to 10.5° when compared to the same spray in a quiescent environment. Additional experiments reveal that biodiesel experiences slower spray progression when compared with diesel, resulting in shorter spray penetrations in the early phase of the spray development (up to 0.7ms after the start of injection, or ASOI). The angle between the fuel injector axis and the air jet axis plays an important role in determining the resultant spray characteristics. This angle should be considered in future correlations.

For polydisperse sprays it was found that ignition can be well correlated with an equivalent monodisperse spray by using a mean diameter based on the total surface area of the spray and not the Sauter-mean-diameter. the experimental part of the program was designed to verify the theoretical spray ignition description and should help in understanding the physics and chemistry of the process. it focused on the importance of transport mechanisms on individual fuel droplet ignition.
