Book excerpt: Spray nozzles and atomizers have several applications in many forms of industry such as aerospace, automotive, combustion, pharmaceutical, and spray coating industries. These nozzles vary in design and performance depending on the application they are used in. Nevertheless, the primary objective for all atomizers is to disperse liquids in a controlled and uniformed manner while minimizing the amount of energy needed in the breakup process to achieve high quality atomization. Air-assist and air-blast atomizers are fuel injector nozzles commonly used in gas turbine engines in the aerospace, and power generation industries. The flow in these atomizers is considered to be two-phase flow since a portion of air taken from the compressor is also used to assist in the breakup of the fuel inside the combustion chamber. These nozzles play a critical role in determining the efficiency of gas turbine engines as their ability to disperse liquid fuel into fine droplets allows for better mixture and evaporation rates; therefore, improving engine performance, reducing emissions, and maximizing fuel efficiency. The objective of this study is to experimentally analyze two gas turbine fuel injector nozzles. The first nozzle is a standard hollow cone nozzle currently used in gas turbine engines, whereas the other is a hollow elliptical nozzle designed to offer greater control over fuel distribution as well as improve overall atomization. The nozzles are investigated under varying gas to liquid ratios (GLR) where key spray parameters such as droplet diameter, velocity, volume flux, as well as spray angle are measured to characterize the nozzles using methods such as Shadowgraph, Optical Patternation, Phase Doppler Particle Analyzer (PDPA), and Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV).

Book excerpt: Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences was first conceived, published, and disseminated by the Center for Information and Numerical Data Analysis and Synthesis (CINDAS) * at Purdue University in 1957, starting its coverage of theses with the academic year 1955. Beginning with Volume 13, the printing and dissemination phases of the activity were transferred to University Microfilms/Xerox of Ann Arbor, Michigan, with the thought that such an arrangement would be more beneficial to the academic and general scientific and technical community. After five years of this joint undertaking we had concluded that it was in the interest of all con cerned if the printing and distribution of the volumes were handled by an interna tional publishing house to assure improved service and broader dissemination. Hence, starting with Volume 18, Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences has been disseminated on a worldwide basis by Plenum Publishing Cor poration of New York, and in the same year the coverage was broadened to include Canadian universities. All back issues can also be ordered from Plenum. We have reported in Volume 34 (thesis year 1989) a total of 13,377 theses titles from 26 Canadian and 184 United States universities. We are sure that this broader base for these titles reported will greatly enhance the value of this important annual reference work. While Volume 34 reports theses submitted in 1989, on occasion, certain univer sities do report theses submitted in previous years but not reported at the time.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The performance of liquid fuel atomizer in gas turbine combustor has direct effects on flame stability, combustion efficiency, and pollutant emissions. Therefore, further understanding of the underlying physics of these atomizers is one of the primary requirements for advanced gas turbine combustor design. Simplex atomizers are commonly used in air-breathing gas turbine engines because they produce good atomization characteristics and are relatively simple and inexpensive to manufacture. Internal flow characteristics of simplex nozzles play a very important role on the atomizer performance. So it is of great practical interest to examine the relationships between internal flow characteristics, nozzle design variables, and important spray features. Part I of this dissertation revealed the detailed flow structure inside simplex atomizers through the DPIV and LDV study. The internal flow field is generally symmetric except very near the inlet slot plane. The velocity profiles are very similar at different axial locations within the swirl chamber. The discharge parameters were measured and used to examine the correlations from previous researchers. Detailed flow field information was linked with the discharge parameters to obtain more insight into the nozzle performance. The relationship between the internal flow characteristics and discharge parameters confirmed that the internal flow structure plays a very important role on the atomizer performance. Part II presents the internal flow structure of large-scale simplex nozzles at two different working-fluid/ambient-fluid density ratios. The effects of density ratio, Reynolds number and orifice geometry on the internal flow field were examined by using a 2-D LDV probe. At the higher density ratio, Reynolds number and orifice geometry has little impact on the internal flow field. At the lower density ratio, the orifice contraction angle has little effect on the internal flow field, whereas the expansion angle can significantly affect the internal flow structure. A dominant frequency was found from the velocity frequency analysis, which indicates that the internal flow is controlled by certain dominant frequency. A dimensionless dominant frequency, similar to the Strouhal number in the flow past a cylinder, was defined using the orifice diameter and mean axial velocity in the orifice. In the part III of this dissertation, the internal flow field of the simplex atomizer with macrolaminated geometry was measured by using the refractive index matching fluid method and DPIV system. In the swirl chamber, the liquid flow is unsteady and exhibits 3-D features, which is more evident as the flow rate increases. In the orifice, the liquid flow is more uniform and axisymmetrical. The discharge parameters were measured and compared with the correlations from previous researchers.

Book excerpt: Liquid spray behavior was studied in a wind tunnel using a non-burning fuel simulant for a number of different types of nozzles suitable for use with air-dropped, pyrophoric flares. Droplet size distribution and the shape and spread rate of the nozzle spray were recorded under a range of flight speed, altitude, and nozzle parameters such as orifice size, fuel pressure and flow rate, and atomizing gas pressure and flow rate. A pulsed laser camera system was used to record photographs of the spray. The superiority of gas-atomizing (pneumatic) nozzles in producing fine droplets was confirmed, while no purely hydraulic nozzle stood out as offering special potential for engineering application. A commercial Malvern Spraytec analyzer and stereoscopic particle image velocimetry system was used to extract droplet size distributions and instantaneous flow fields, respectively. Aviation kerosene (Jet A-1) sprays associated with flow rates pertaining to engine ignition and take-off were investigated. Droplet sizes of the primary pressure-swirl nozzle were found to be 50% smaller compared to the secondary prefilming/airblast nozzle. The flow fields of both nozzles yield a turbulent-jet airblast stream with the primary pressure-swirl/airblast nozzle seeing a decrease in mean axial velocity with increase in axial distance; contrasting the secondary prefilming/airblast nozzle which shows an increase in mean axial velocity as distance from the nozzle head is increased. Overall, the industry hybrid fuel injector exhibits stable performance with optimal atomization quality and symmetry among all experimental conditions.
