Hierzu kläre ich zunächst die für diesen Gegenstandsbereich zentralen Begriffe. In Kapitel drei werde ich mich daraufhin mit dem kindlichen Spracherwerb im Allgemeinen und dem Zweitspracherwerb im Speziellen beschäftigen. Außerdem werde ich auf die unterschiedlichen Faktoren eingehen, die den Zweitspracherwerb beeinflussen. Abschließend werde ich einen Blick auf die Schulpraxis werfen und wie dort mit dem Thema Mehrsprachigkeit umgegangen wird. Bei der Bundesrepublik Deutschland handelt es sich schon Jahrzehnte lang um ein durch Migration geprägtes Einwanderungsland, weshalb das Thema Mehrsprachigkeit in den letzten Jahren zunehmend präsenter und relevanter wurde. Auch in den Schulen gibt es durch Zuwanderung eine große und ständig wachsende Zahl von Kindern, die mit Deutsch als Zweitsprache aufwachsen. Hier wird die vorhandene Mehrsprachigkeit jedoch meist ignoriert oder allenfalls toleriert. Nur in wenigen Ausnahmefällen wird sie ausreichend gestützt und gefördert.

Erstmals gaben die PISA- Studien ein differenziertes Bild uber den Leistungserfolg von Kindern und Jugendlichen mit Migrationshintergrund im deutschen Schulsystem. In den PISA-Studien von 2000, 2003 und 2006 zeigte sich dabei eindeutig, dass Schuler/innen mit Migrationshintergrund in ihren Lesekompetenzen und Mathematikleistungen eindeutig hinter ihren deutschen Mitschuler/innen lagen, selbst wenn sie ihre gesamte Schulbildung in Deutschland durchlaufen hatten. Sogar Schuler/innen, die im Alltag hauptsachlich Deutsch sprachen, erreichten dennoch nicht das gleiche Niveau wie ihre Mitschuler/innen ohne Migrationshintergrund. Diese Ergebnisse lieferte auch die IGLU Studie, welche in der vierten Jahrgangsstufe der Grundschulen durchgefuhrt wurde. Auch hier zeigte sich, dass Kinder mit Migrationshintergrund schlechtere Leseleistungen erzielten, als Kinder ohne Migrationshintergrund. Selbst Kinder, die im Alltag uberwiegend Deutsch sprachen, schnitten zwar vergleichsweise gut, aber dennoch schlechter als deutsche Kinder ohne Migrationshintergrund ab. Ausgehend von dieser Situation, mochte ich in meiner Arbeit der Frage nachgehen, inwiefern die schlechteren Schulleistungen mehrsprachiger Kinder unter anderem moglicherweise auch mit deren Sprachentwicklung einhergehen und wie die Schule darauf reagieren kann. Dabei werde ich zunachst mit einer Erlauterung des kindlichen Spracherwerbs beginnen und insbesondere auf den Spracherwerb bei mehrsprachigen Kindern sowie auf den sukzessiven Zweitspracherwerb eingehen. Dem folgend werde ich das Phanomen der Mehrsprachigkeit genauer unter die Lupe nehmen
