Book excerpt: The full, frank story of a remarkable life’s journey—to the pinnacle of success as a basketball player, icon, and entrepreneur, to the depths of personal trauma and back, to a place of flourishing and peace—made possible above all by a family’s love Grant Hill always had game. His choice of college was a subject of national interest, and his arrival at Duke University cemented the program’s arrival at the top. In his freshman year, he led the team to its first NCAA championship, and three championship appearances in four years. His Duke career produced some of the most iconic moments in college basketball history, and Coach K proved to be a lifelong mentor. Later, as one of the NBA’s best players and a new face of the Detroit Pistons franchise, Hill was the first person with the potential to give Michael Jordan a run for his money, not just as a player but as a brand. His $45 million rookie contract was almost the least of it. He turned down Nike for Fila, and soon Method Man and Tupac Shakur were wearing his shoes. Hill writes candidly about all of it, including the transactional impermanence of life in the league and the isolation caused by his growing fame. His parents and friends helped ground him, and eventually he met a gifted musician named Tamia. The love he found with her and the arrival of their two beautiful daughters would be his rock as a brutal and mysterious injury sidelined him, coinciding with his wife’s own serious health struggles. With openness and insight, Hill relates his entire path, including post-career highlights like his Hall of Fame induction, co-ownership of the Atlanta Hawks, the directorship of the USA Basketball Men’s National Team, and even a yearly gig calling the Final Four. Hill’s father, Calvin, used to tell him that there were always a lot of reasons but never any excuses, and Game is a distillation of a lifetime’s effort to understand the reasons—the good and the bad. At his hardest moments, Hill sought out wisdom from others, stories of inspiration and overcoming obstacles. Now, with Game, he has returned the favor.

Read on your PC, Mac, smartphone, tablet or Kindle device! In Grant Hill: The Inspiring Story of One of Basketball's Most Resilient Forwards, you'll read about the inspirational story of basketball's star, Grant Hill. Grant Hill was once the go-to man as a member of the Detroit Pistons. Despite several potentially career ending injuries, Grant persevered through countless surgeries and evolved his style of playing basketball to become a consistent contributing member of the Phoenix Suns and the Los Angeles Clippers in the latter half of his career. While he never truly panned out to the contract expectations of Orlando Magic fans, his recovery from injury is an awe-inspiring one of perseverance and grit. Many never thought he would ever grace the courts with his play after his first major injury as a member of the Pistons. Here is a preview of what is inside this book: Early Life and Childhood High School Years College Years at Duke Grant's Personal Life Grant Hill's Impact on Basketball and Beyond Grant Hill's Legacy An excerpt from the book: There are few sports leagues today as grueling as the NBA. The NFL may be tougher per individual game, but they play just 16 games, with a normal rest of 1 week between games. Soccer's Premier League may test its athletes to the limits with its lack of commercial breaks and constant activity, but even they just play 38 games in a season which lasts from August to April. The NBA plays 82 games, with teams sometimes playing back-to-back games and few days of rest over the course of a season. Then there are two additional months of playoffs, where a championship team will play somewhere between 16 and 28 additional games. Given the physicality of the NBA as well as the strain of the long season, the most important quality an athlete can possess is the ability to stay healthy. It does not matter how high you can jump, or how well you can shoot or pass, if your body is unable to handle the strain of the NBA. That simple fact has left a dark and saddening stain on the career of Grant Hill, a potential all-time great whose brilliant career was derailed by an ankle that would not heal. The particularly tragic part of Hill's injury is that it could have been avoided. If he had listened to the screams of pain from his body which warned him that it could not take much more, he could have avoided the ankle injury which destroyed his career of greatness. But Hill chose to keep playing - partly out of pride, but partly out of a desire to avoid being hated. In a sense, Hill's high moral character ended up destroying his career. But at the same time, that same character enabled him to persevere where others would have lost themselves to despair. Hill worked and worked to prove that he still belonged in the league, and managed to carve out a respectable niche for himself even after his many surgeries. It was yet another sign of how great he could have been if his body had been a little kinder to him. Book excerpt: New York Times bestseller "A compelling narrative about the people who produced the most spine-tingling moment in modern college basketball history.” –Seth Davis, Sports Illustrated and CBS March 28, 1992. The final of the NCAA East Regional, Duke vs. Kentucky. Millions could say they witnessed the greatest game and the greatest shot in the history of college basketball. But it wasn’t just the final play—an 80-foot inbounds pass with 2.1 seconds left in overtime—that made Duke’s 104-103 victory so memorable. Each player and coach arrived at that point with a unique story to tell. In The Last Great Game, ESPN columnist Gene Wojciechowski turns the game we think we remember into a drama filled with suspense, humor, revelations, and reverberations. Not just for Duke or Kentucky fans, this acclaimed New York Times bestseller is for everyone who appreciates the great moments in sports.

Book excerpt: NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • The NBA according to The Sports Guy—now updated with fresh takes on LeBron, the Celtics, and more! Foreword by Malcom Gladwell • “The work of a true fan . . . it might just represent the next phase of sports commentary.”—The Atlantic Bill Simmons, the wildly opinionated and thoroughly entertaining basketball addict known to millions as ESPN’s The Sports Guy, has written the definitive book on the past, present, and future of the NBA. From the age-old question of who actually won the rivalry between Bill Russell and Wilt Chamberlain to the one about which team was truly the best of all time, Simmons opens—and then closes, once and for all—every major pro basketball debate. Then he takes it further by completely reevaluating not only how NBA Hall of Fame inductees should be chosen but how the institution must be reshaped from the ground up, the result being the Pyramid: Simmons’s one-of-a-kind five-level shrine to the ninety-six greatest players in the history of pro basketball. And ultimately he takes fans to the heart of it all, as he uses a conversation with one NBA great to uncover that coveted thing: The Secret of Basketball. Comprehensive, authoritative, controversial, hilarious, and impossible to put down (even for Celtic-haters), The Book of Basketball offers every hardwood fan a courtside seat beside the game’s finest, funniest, and fiercest chronicler.
