Book excerpt: Osteoporosis is a serious health issue affecting 10 million Americans, with an additional 44 million being at risk. Due to the morbidity and mortality associated with fractures caused by osteoporosis, it is an important public health concern. Some researchers suggest that African-American women fracture at a lower rate when compared to Caucasians with the same bone mineral density (BMD). However, when African-American women do fracture, they have higher mortality and morbidity rates. Data regarding risk factors and prevalence of low BMD among African American and Caucasian college-aged women are limited. Purpose. The primary purpose of this research was to explain the variance in bone mineral density (BMD) in African-American and Caucasian college-aged women. A secondary purpose was to evaluate the differences in osteoporosis knowledge among college-aged African-American and Caucasian women. Methodology. This study included 101 women ages 18 to 30 years. Fifty participants were African-American and 51 were Caucasian. Anthropometric measurements, osteoporosis knowledge, bone mineral density, body composition, physical activity and nutrient intake were assessed in the present study. Results. In this sample, 38.6% had low spinal BMD and 7.9% had low femoral bone mineral density. Femoral and spinal BMD were regressed on seven potential predictors: race, family history of osteoporosis, weight, current physical activity, osteoporosis knowledge, length of time on oral contraceptives, and calcium intake. Multiple regression analysis showed that BMI/weight and current physical activity were the only two independent variables that significantly predicted spinal and femoral BMD. The final model explained 14.9% of the variance in spinal BMD and 13.1% of the variance in femoral BMD. Osteoporosis knowledge was not significantly different between African-Americans and Caucasians. Conclusions. Contrary to what was hypothesized, race was not a significant predictor of spinal or femoral BMD. Therefore, it is important for both African-American and Caucasian women alike to engage in osteoporosis-preventive behaviors. If women between the ages of 18 and 30 are made aware of their low-BMD status, they can begin bone-building activities before they reach peak bone mass. This provides an opportunity to decrease risk for osteoporosis and related fractures later in life.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first book of its kind to focus solely on the female athlete triad - its origins, its recognition, and most importantly, its management. Since the symptoms themselves cover a range of medical specialties, chapters are written by experts in a number of relevant fields - sports medicine, orthopedics, endocrinology, and pediatrics - with an eye toward overall care of the young female athlete. Additionally, each chapter includes suggestions on how to educate and communicate with young athletes and their parents, as well as trainers and coaches, on how to manage the illness outside of the direct clinical setting. The female athlete triad is often seen in sports where low body weight is emphasized, such as gymnastics, figure skating, and running, though it can appear in any sport or activity. The interrelated symptoms - eating disorders, amenorrhea, and low bone mass - exist on a spectrum of severity and are serious and potentially life-threatening if not properly treated. Psychological problems, in addition to medical ones, are not uncommon. The Female Athlete Triad: A Clinical Guide discusses all of these areas for a well-rounded and in-depth approach to the phenomenon and will be a useful reference for any clinician working with female athletes across the lifespan.

An assessment of the extent to which bone density assessment affects lifestyle change in postmenopausal women, especially concerning calcium intake and calcium-fortified food intake in postmenopausal women, is needed. Objectives . (1) investigate whether postmenopausal women's decision (based on personal decision and HCPs recommendation) to start or increase dietary calcium intake, and/or start or increase supplemental calcium are associated with bone mineral density (BMD) test results (and T-score categories), based on self report on questionnaires; (2) assess whether postmenopausal women's consumption of calcium-fortified foods differed one year following BMD screening, and were associated with T-score category. Conclusions . Our study showed that results of osteoporosis screening influences postmenopausal women's decisions to increase dietary and supplemental calcium intake. Calcium-fortified food intake one year after screening was lower in those with osteopenia compare to those with normal bone density levels. (Abstract shortened by UMI.).

Book excerpt: Because athletes often seek to enhance their performance and body composition through nutrition, researchers must continue to investigate the current dietary consumption and the relationship of diet to body composition to best individualize nutrition guidance for athletes. Exploration of sex differences and sport specific differences in dietary intake provides insight on possible nutrition trends in specific athlete populations and risks for deficiencies. Calcium, magnesium, and zinc affect physiological mechanisms and systems needed for athletic performance, such as calcium for bone health; magnesium for energy production; and, zinc for the function of hundreds of enzymes and proteins. One purpose of our research was to determine the dietary intake of calcium, magnesium, and zinc in female and male athletes, including runners, triathletes, rowers, CrossFit athletes, and General athletes, 18 years of age and older. We also investigated the presence of sex differences and sport specific differences in dietary intake of these minerals. Finally, we examined possible correlations among these mineral intakes and body composition (bone mineral density [BMD] and percent body fat) to determine the strongest predictors of body composition. We evaluated the dietary intake and body composition of 247 athletes, 129 women and 118 men, with a mean age of 34.86±11.38 years. The population included runners (n=90), General athletes (n=59), triathletes (n=43), rowers (n=34), and CrossFit athletes (n=21). Dietary intake was assessed via a 2005 Block Food Frequency Questionnaire (FFQ), which analyzes one's annual macronutrient and micronutrient intake. Bone mineral density (total body, lumbar spine, and dual femoral neck) and percent body fat were measured using dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry (DXA). One sample T-tests were used to compare the dietary intake of calcium, magnesium, and zinc to the Recommended Dietary Allowances (RDA) in female and male athletes. A one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) was used to determine differences in dietary intake between the sexes and among various sports. Multiple regression analyses were utilized to identify the strongest predictors for BMD and percent body fat. All data were analyzed using standard SPSS version 25 software, with the alpha a priori set at 0.05. We found that across all female athletes, dietary intake of calcium was significantly below the RDA of 1000 mg/day (801.3 mg/day ± 264.9, p

Book excerpt: "Physical activity, adequate energy, calcium and vitamin D intake all influence bone mineral density (BMD) in young adult females. Unfortunately, it is common to see nutrition deficiencies in this population that may put them at risk for a variety of health issues including lower BMD. Purpose: To determine the influence of the type of sport on regional and total BMD and its association with dietary energy, vitamin D and calcium intake. Methods: Seventy-three female students from McGill University were evaluated (average age of 20.8 years old, height 167.4 cm, weight 62.3 kg, and BMI 22.4). Forty-four athletes of 4 different Varsity Teams: basketball (n=13), volleyball (n=11), figure skating (n = 13), and synchronized swimming (n=7); and 29 age-matched sedentary students took part in the investigation. Dietary intake, Vitamin D and Calcium intake were assessed using a 3-day Food Log and a FFQ (short version) then analysed with the Food ProcessorTM Software. Total Body (TB), lumbar spine (LS) (L1-L4) and femoral neck (FN) BMD were assessed by DXA scanning. A one-way ANOVA explored between-group differences. Linear Regression Analysis, Pearson Correlations and ANCOVA were used to explore the influence of energy, Vitamin D and Calcium intake on BMD. Results: A significant difference in BMD at all 3 sites was observed across sports (TB = F(4,72) = 10.2, p

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There are two main reasons for pursuing research in the Sports Sciences. Firstly, by studying responses to exercise, we learn about the normal function of the tissues and or gans whose function allows exercise to be performed. The genetic endowment of elite ath letes is a major factor in their success, and they represent one end of the continuum of human performance capability: the study of elite athletes also demonstrates the limits of human adaptation because nowhere else is the body subjected to such levels of intensive exercise on a regular basis. The second reason for studying Sports Science is the intrinsic interest and value of the subject itself. Elite performers set levels to which others can as pire, but even among spectators, sport is an important part oflife and society. of top sport and elite performers, there is also another reason Apart from the study for medical and scientific interest in sport. There is no longer any doubt that lack ofphysi cal activity is a major risk factor for many of the diseases that affect people in all coun tries: such diseases include coronary heart disease, obesity, hypertension, and diabetes. An increased level of recreational physical activity is now an accepted part of the prescription for treatment and prevention of many illnesses, including those with psychological as well as physical causes. An understanding of the normal response to exercise, as well as of the role of exercise in disease prevention, is therefore vital.
