Book excerpt: In today’s era of genomic testing, targeted cancer therapies, and increased cancer survivorship, recognition and management of oncologic disease in children is becoming more important to address. This book familiarizes clinicians with the range of oncologic issues that pediatric dermatologists encounter, including the diagnosis and management of various skin tumors, cutaneous reactions to cancer therapies, and both acute and long term complications of cancer therapy. Written and edited by experts in the field, Pediatric Skin Tumors and Cutaneous Reactions to Cancer Therapy explores these important topics, beginning with the discussion of various skin tumors, and associated genetic syndromes, followed by chapters on acute cutaneous reactions to traditional and targeted cancer therapies, graft versus host disease, and opportunistic skin infections. This book concludes with the discussion of both malignant and nonmalignant late effects of the skin in childhood cancer survivors.

The skin has much to tell us about where to look for illness, how grave that illness may be, and what strategies for therapy might be most advantageous. The skin is also the organ most easily accessible for obtaining tissue for pathological examination, culture, and examination of debris. These tools will also be discussed and expanded upon. This book classifies the skin conditions from the standpoint of organ involved as well as specific disease. The text makes use of many illustrations and photographs.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book will present completely new, unique findings in eczema: sweat ducts that become occluded with staphylococcal biofilms trigger the innate immune system with TLR2 receptor activity and this leads to production of the “itching” and inflammation in this disease. Dermatologists and pediatricians treat eczema exceedingly well and this is ordinarily accomplished with corticosteroid containing topicals. However, after treatment, it is intriguing that aggressive moisturization and cautious bathing will in most instances prevent future flares of the disease, even though it is precipitated by bacteria and their biofilms. Diseases where eczema has been found with a completely unrelated disorder have shown occluded sweat ducts on histopathologic examination. These include Meyerson’s nevus which has a nevus and eczema in the same biopsy and Doucas Kapetanakis-type of pigmented purpuric dermatosis that shows occluded sweat ducts along with the capillaritis.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The best-selling text has been completely revised and revitalised in this fifth edition, with the authors once again encouraging general practitioners, medical students, general physicians and early stage dermatology specialist trainees and interns to relish the unique challenge of diagnosing and treating skin conditions. Clinical Dermatology, 5th edition contains over 400 high quality pictures and diagrams combined with colourful phrases to illustrate and entertain as it teaches. The book has established a reputation as a ‘way of learning’ and as an accessible guide to the subject for the aspiring specialist. Readers are guided through the maze that too often lies between the presenting skin complaint and its final diagnosis and treatment. The authors have skilfully crafted an easily read text with enough detail to clarify the subject, but not enough to obscure it. This fifth edition contains new chapters on non-invasive physical treatment and dermoscopy, and new material on cosmetic dermatology, surgical dermatology, the skin and the psyche, and dermatoses of non-Caucasian skin. The text throughout the book has been updated in line with developments in the science and practice of dermatology. “... brilliantly succeeds in enticing you to look further. The writing is clear, and the joint British-American authorship avoids any parochial views.” From a review of a previous edition in BMJ “...a very well-presented book...an excellent aid for teaching. I recommend this book highly to individuals and departments.” From a review of a previous edition in J Derm Treatment “… provides a good overview of the structure and function of the skin as well as a good foundation for learning dermatology…well organized and includes a chapter dedicated to skin signs of systemic disease which is not covered in the other dermatology primers.” From a review of a previous edition in JAMA
