Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As the first comprehensive study in the twentieth century of Luther's concept of the Holy Spirit, this book should be welcomed by every serious student of Luther's theology - for although Luther's view of the Holy Spirit dominates every aspect of his vast theological output, it is not always easy to discover what he really thought. Historians and theologians have at different times come to varying conclusions, based on the same fundamental writings of Luther. Enthusiastic followers of the Reformer, in their efforts to convince others, have from time to time fallen into the temptation to oversimplify his teachings. Spiritus Creator is the answer to this confusion. Laying aside the numerous interpretations of others, Regin Prenter, a noted Danish Theologian and scholar, presents Luther's thought itself. In this study he does not ask where Luther's thoughts came from, or how they developed; he asks only what Luther thought. Questioning, for example, whether Luther's view of the Holy Spirit was really so traditional, so much colored by medieval thought patterns as has been widely assumed, Dr. Prenter shows how Luther used Augustinian terms - the vocabulary of his age - yet gave them new content, even new definitions. He demonstrates how Luther's concept of the Holy Spirit did indeed take shape in a traditional form but that it then grew into what is for all Protestants a crucial, evangelical insight. Spiritus Creator is divided into two parts: the concept of the Holy Spirit before Luther had to defend his teachings from the distortions of enthusiasts, and this same concept during his struggle with the enthusiasts. This pattern gives the author opportunity to present the basic statements of the early period without reference to the polemical situation of Luther's later life. It also demonstrates the essential continuity that gives Luther's concept of the Holy Spirit importance for the thinking of all ages - our own not excluded.

Book excerpt: Written particularly for the Charismatic Renewal in the English-speaking world, Come, Creator Spirit is a helpful guide for a better understanding of the Holy Spirit. In this detailed commentary on the famous hymn Veni Creator, sung at the beginning of every new year, ecumenical council, and priestly ordination, Fr. Raniero Cantalamessa describes the Paraclete and gives praise to its glory. Progressing through the hymn line by line, he provides insights, reflections, hymnography of Christian traditions, and testimonies of the saints. This book describes the Church's experience of the Spirit of today, as well as the past. The biblical and theological base of the hymn opens the reader to the perspectives and inspirations in this book. Its Vision of the Holy Spirit in the history of salvation emerges as the reader progresses through the reading. In the celebration of the ecumenical character of Veni Creator, this book draws from Orthodox, Protestant, and Catholic traditions for all those who wish to seek a better understanding of the Holy Spirit. Chapters are "Spirit, Come!" “Creator,” “Fill with Heavenly Grace the Hearts that You Have Made,” “You Whom We Name the Paraclete,” “Most High Gift of God,” “Living Water,” “Fire,” “Love,” “Anointing for the Soul,” “Sevenfold in Your Gifts,” “Finger of God’s Right Hand,” “The Father’s Solemn Promise,” “Gifting Lips with the Word to Say,” “Kindle Your Light in Our Minds,” “Pour Love into Our Hearts,” “Infirmity in This Body of Ours Overcoming with Strength Secure,” “The Enemy Drive from Us Away,” “Peace Then Give without Delay,” “With You As Guide We Avoid All Cause of Harm,” “Through You May We the Father Know,” “Through You May We Know the Son As Well,” and “And You, the Spirit of Them Both, May We Always Believe.”

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In retrospect, Karl Barth conceded that "everything which needs to be said, considered, and believed about God the Father and God the Son . . . might be shown and illuminated in its foundation through God the Holy Spirit." Nevertheless, he refrained from doing so because it was "still too difficult to distinguish between God's Spirit and man's spirit," and so it was--then. However, the late twentieth-century explosion in various disciplines of thought now provides greater discernment between human and divine spirit, a better understanding of the logic of spirit, and the concept and role of spirit in distinction to mind and body. Gorsuch's theological interdisciplinary investigation into the analogia spiritus and a Christian perichoretic relational ontology brings new meaning and coherence to previously difficult scriptures. Moreover, it provides the fundamental landscape for addressing issues of profound theological consequence: (1) redressing the death of transcendence with a new understanding of relational dynamics through which free, temporal, and self-determining human beings might mutually relate with an Eternal God of providence; (2) laying the framework for a viable Christian pluralistic hypothesis in an increasingly pluralistic world; and (3) providing an enriched theological anthropology for addressing human spirit, origins, and theodicy.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Preaching is as dangerous and as exhilarating as careening down some class IV rapids. It is dangerous because in the Old Testament, God prescribed the death penalty for preaching one's own opinion when called to speak God's Word. The pulpit is no casual or safe place! But preaching is also exhilarating because God places his creative, life-giving word right into your mouth. And though you don't know what will happen next, something that God appointed will definitely happen when you, the preacher, say what God authorizes you to say. This book is the result of over thirty years of wrestling with God's word. It expresses some of my astonishment over how faithfully God acts through preaching that word. Preaching is God's business. Mostly the preacher needs to get out of the way and let God do the talking. When that is the case, your hearers will tell you about it, and you will be less likely to miscarry in some of the myriad ways listed in this book. Hopefully, Luther's design for the way preachers bring that life-giving word of promise will encourage and promote and, once again, bring the same world-changing power that was let loose in the Reformation.

How can we be sure that our church community in the present is a faithful representation of the originating community in the past? This book explores how Pentecostalism--the world's fastest-growing expression of Christianity, since its inception at the beginning of the twentieth century--can identify as the same community that birthed the church in the first century. A community that spans two millennia of church history presents numerous challenges, which raise crucial questions. In the case of Pentecostalism, these questions concern the criteria we might employ in order to recognize various instances of that community: both in the present, and throughout the past. The Pentecostal emphasis on the Holy Spirit as the founding force behind the early church suggests some exciting possibilities. By bringing together Pentecostal theology and hermeneutical philosophy, this volume develops a model which attempts to discern the Pentecostal Spirit from within history. Rather than arriving at a historical survey of various theologies of the Spirit, this book instead advances a historiography which is itself inherently Spirit-oriented: a pneumatology of history.

Book excerpt: With a close reading of both Hildegard and Bonhoeffer, Jennifer Campbell encourages the contemporary church to read the signs of the times and to reach out to those in need in prophetic witness to both the Word of God and the Holy Spirit. With a view to recovering a balanced and rounded theology of prophecy for the church today, she discusses the workings of both the Word of God (viewed as Christ and the Scriptures) and the Holy Spirit in the works and lives of two powerful prophetic leaders.
