Book excerpt: Despite being blessed with the power of intelligence, logic, imagination and analysis, why do we humans struggle to use the gift of common sense in so many areas of our lives? Have you ever found yourself wondering... Why do we get angry or irritated? Why do we feel guilty? Why do we tell lies or get defensive? Why is there so much lack of trust? Why do we struggle to accept ourselves as we are? Why do we often complicate our own lives? Why do we love to criticize or shy away from candid conversation? The simple truth is that we could handle situations better and solve dilemmas just by applying common sense. This book takes a clear-eyed look at day-to-day scenarios we are all familiar with, in which, by simply altering our perspective and using some common sense, we can resolve or reduce our issues. It serves as a down- to-earth guide to letting go of negative emotions such as anger, frustration, guilt, grief, irritation, unhappiness and joylessness. These pages are dedicated to helping people live their lives with greater ease, freedom, and simplicity – by consciously using the most important tool existence has bestowed upon us – common sense.

Book excerpt: Religion Online provides new insights about religiosity in a contemporary context, offering a comprehensive look at the intersection of digital media, faith communities, and practices of all sorts. Recent research on Apple users, video games, virtual worlds, artificial intelligence, digital music, and sports as religion supports the idea that media and religion, once considered separate entities, are in many cases the same thing. New media and religious practice can no longer be detached; this two-volume set discusses how religionists are embracing the Internet amidst cultural shifts of secularization, autonomous religious worship, millennials' affinity for new media, and the rise of fundamentalism in the global south. While other works describe case studies, this book explains how new media are interwoven into the very fabric of religious belief, behavior, and community. Chapters break down the past, present, and projected future of the use of digital media in relation to faith traditions of many varieties, extending from mainline Christianity to new religious movements. The book also examines the impacts of digital media on beliefs and practices around the world. In exploring these subjects, it calls on the study of culture, namely anthropology, to conceptualize a technological period as significant as the industrial revolution.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Just as the emergence of print and literacy created conditions for vast religious change at the time of the Reformation, the emergence of a digital culture shaped by computers and the internet has led to radically different assumptions about religious identity, how people connect and maintain transformative relationships, and how people follow and give authority to leaders. The central issues concerning this digital culture are not technological but theological and anthropological. Old models of stable religious identity and community seem irrelevant in a culture in which everyone is in motion. The book identifies three profound changes produced by digital culture which challenge existing understandings of church: 1) a shift to seeing Christian identity as an ongoing constructive project, 2) the development of fluid networked forms of community, and 3) the emergence of less hierarchical more conversational forms of leadership.

Book excerpt: Cyber Worship in Multifaith Perspectives, as is implied by its name, explores worship (i.e., Prayer, Praise, Scripture, Sacrament, Rituals, Confessions, Eucharist, Rites, Pilgrimages, Reflection, Contemplation, etc.) on the Internet. It is not an 'everything you need to know' guide about the subjects of faith and belief, religions-online, religions on the Net, or religions in cyberspace. Rather, it is a book about religious and spiritual experience under the rubric, cyber worship, which is the variety of ways religious devotion is performed and carried out on the Internet. The term 'Cyber Worship' is a catchall phrase, which includes variants such as online worship, virtual worship, electronic prayer, cyber puja, cyber synagogue, and so on. Dr. Mohamed Taher has thus assembled a quick reference for two groups: those communities that are involved in Cyber Worship and business Webs that collaborate in sustaining wired environments. As such, this book provides an interesting and current perspective on a practice that will continue to grow in the future.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the 1971 White House Conference on Aging in the United States, the need to move from religiosity into new areas such as Spiritual Assessment and Spirituality has emerged. This movement has picked up momentum among scholars, particularly in terms of research in the area of Spirituality. While spirituality as a term is employed in many new studies, this term continues to defy the quest for a single definition and method. This book is divided into three sections. In the first the authors reflect on the philosophical and theological issues presented by these terms from a variety of both cognate and practical methodological approaches. The second section offers insights from the major professions of sociology, psychology, public health, nursing and social work. The final section offers insight and assistance to researchers and authors on specific religious traditions. This book will be important for anyone working to develop such practical tools as spiritual assessment forms to those who engage in more formal scholarly investigation.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The New Testament contains these diverse statements: 1) God is Spirit. 2) God is Love. 3) Love is a 'Fruit of the Holy Spirit', amongst many others. 4) The Spirit of God (the Holy Spirit) is Seven Spirits or a Sevenfold Spirit. Simon Lee has spent the last twenty years pondering these issues and the following resulting questions, which this book tries to answer in full: - 1) Love then is a Spirit, and according to Shakespeare a 'many-splendoured thing'. Can we attempt to summarise Love so rich in artistic descriptions by thousands of poets, singers, writers and playwrights and other Spirits, in simple terms? 2) What are the other Six Spirits? Can we decide what they are? 3) The Bible often describes The Spirit as resembling a Tree or Fountain. How do the Seven Spirits co-exist in this apparently perfectly scientific description of their structure? Can we describe this structure, especially visualise it? 4) Modern Science, especially physics, claims to be close to a scientific Theory of Everything. There are certain holes in this theory. Science ignores the spiritual and artistic in life. Do the latter in fact need to be called upon to 'fill the scientific holes'? scientific camps', the ' NUMBERS of things' involved must precisely match, i.e. the quantities of 'spiritual essences used to fill holes in science' must be precisely correct. Are they? 6) Do other Holy Books in other Faiths back up these notions about a Set of Holy Spirits going together to make up the Spirit of God? 7) Clearly the Spirit of God has enemies trying to supplant or replace spiritual with secular 'things'. Is the rising main enemy of the Holy Spirit today, Information Technology? Twenty years of thinking and research goes into Simon Lee's claim that this book provides a resounding, convincingly argued answer of 'YES ' to all seven of these questions. It is therefore an 'analysis of Spirit' i.e. of God as a Spirit Being

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Intimate Spirituality: The Catholic Way of Love and Sex, Gordon J. Hilsman presents sexual loving as integral to rather than separate from most people’s spiritual lives. His coalescing of intimate love with traditional Catholic concepts—virtues, capital sins, fruits of the Spirit, sacraments—augments the pervasively moral view of sex with a spiritual perspective that highlights its beauty and power to shape the virtue of peoples lives. Seeing sexual attraction as built into humanity by the Creator to feed and challenge virtually all persons worldwide, he illustrates how intimate loving is actually a neglected aspect of Christian spirituality that has never been developed as fully as the individual and the communal. Hilsman calls upon theologians and spiritual leaders to further develop the understanding of intimate loving as a genuinely beautiful spiritual aspect of life. Many Christians (Catholics and Protestants alike) who take both their love lives and their Christian faith seriously, will find the positive, healthy view of sexuality presented in this book illuminating and helpful. So will those who counsel them.

Book excerpt: In The Future of Art in a Postdigital Age, artist and educator Mel Alexenberg offers a vision of a postdigital future that reveals a paradigm shift from the Hellenistic to the Hebraic roots of Western culture. He ventures beyond the digital to explore postdigital perspectives rising from creative encounters among art, science, technology and human consciousness. The interrelationships between these perspectives demonstrate the confluence between postdigital art and the dynamic, Jewish structure of consciousness. Alexenberg’s pioneering artwork – a fusion of spiritual and technological realms – exemplifies the theoretical thesis of this investigation into interactive and collaborative forms that imaginatively envisages the vast potential of art in a postdigital future.

This book was released on 2009-10-13 with total page 1222 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Acknowledging and understanding spiritual formation is vital in contemporary education. This book explores the dynamic relationship between education and wellbeing. It examines the theory underpinning the practice of education in different societies where spirituality and care are believed to be at the heart of all educational experiences. The book recognizes that, regardless of the context or type of educational experience, education is a caring activity in which the development of the whole person - body, mind and spirit - is a central aim for teachers and educators in both formal and informal learning. The chapters in this handbook present and discuss topics that focus on spirituality as an integral part of human experience and, consequently, essential to educational programs which aim to address personal and communal identity, foster resilience, empathy and compassion, and promote meaning and connectedness.
