Book excerpt: Excerpt from Spiritual Perspective and Other Sermons This saying was addressed to Scribes and Pharisees. As a class, they were given to make religion too much a matter of outward forms and ceremonies - too little a matter of the heart. There were no doubt Pharisees and Pharisees and an idea of Pharisaism derived from the New Testament alone would probably be exceedingly unjust. But still, making every allowance and giving them credit for a large measure of real earnestness and real goodness, there can be no doubt that the average Pharisee was far too much engrossed with ceremonial considerations, with conduct rather than with character, with ritual rather than with moral uprightness: and Jesus, with his perception that it is character which gives to conduct its abiding grace and glory, laid his finger at once upon this want of proportion in the prevailing views of duty and religion, and tried to make people discern more clearly what things were of real importance and what were comparatively insignificant. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Spiritual Perspective and Other Sermons The Discourses of Mr. Perry published, with a Memoir, early in the present year, wore to a large extent "occasional" sermons, delivered in connection with some special event or day or institution. It is thought, however, that Mr. Perry's pulpit deliverances were, by reason of their simplicity and directness and their freedom from marked personal idiosyncrasies, of a kind unusually well adapted for use by lay preachers, or parents conducting services at home; such workers often being reluctant to rely on their own compositions, yet finding much difficulty in meeting with printed sermons entirely suitable to their purpose. In the selection of the present Sermons the want thus indicated has throughout been kept in view. While, therefore, all these Sermons are such as are well remembered for their beauty and force by those who heard them, they are all such as may be redelivered on any Sunday in the year. The manuscripts from which they are printed bear occasional acknowledgments of indebtedness to Robertson, of Brighton, Robert Collyer, Brooke Herford, and other preachers of a liberal faith. It has not been thought necessary to investigate the exact measure of the influences thus referred to. Charles John Perry was born at Bulwell, near Nottingham, in Juno, 1852, became Minister of the Hope Street Church, Liverpool, in September, 1878, and passed away on October the 9th, 1883. The knowledge of God is not to be earned by sacrificing reason to feeling, or feeling to reason, by ascetic observance or by orthodox belief: it is given freely to all that purify themselves with all the force of heart, and soul, and mind. Further, the only power that can bring feeling, thought, and will into harmonious action is the personal influence of Christ - which St. Paul sums up in faith. From that personal influence all holy desires, all good counsels, and all just works do proceed, though the doers be those who never heard His name; and to its transfiguring power, if it be rightly received, no limit can be set even in this life. And even in his own day Elijah seems to have inspired awe and wonder rather than affection. He was a stern, reserved man, who scarcely seemed to feel as other men felt. Not only have we Ahab's startled cry, Hast thou found me, O mine enemy? But even the widow of Zarephath, who had watched for months with wondering eye the prophet's sombre face, exclaimed as she clutched the corpse of her boy, Hast thou come to call my sin to remembrance, and to slay my son? So, too, Obadiah, though supported by a good conscience, still doubted this incomprehensible man. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Sermons to the Spiritual Man There is no being with whom man stands in such close and important relations as with the invisible God, and yet there is no being with whom he finds it SO difficult to have communication. The earth he can see and touch. His fellow-man he can look in the eye and Speak to. But no man hath seen God at any time. Century after century passes by, and the Highest utters no voice that is audible to the outward ear. Thousands and millions Of human supplications are sent up to Him who dwells in the heavens, but the heavens are not rent, no deity comes down, and no visible Sign is made. The skies are Silent. The impenetrable vail between man's body and God's Spirit is not withdrawn even for an instant. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Spiritual Apprehension: Sermons and Papers The sermons and articles contained in this volume form a somewhat miscellaneous collection, but their general object is to promote that inward action towards things invisible and visible which I have sought to indicate by the title Spiritual Apprehension. In the expressly theological por tion which is placed first, I have advocated the principle that our. Spiritual faculties, which may be summed up in faith and hope and love, have by the Creator's appointment the chief authority in our nature, and that by these we are intended to have a real knowledge of the incomprehensible Being who awakens and attracts them. I have pointed out that these spiritual faculties assert their dominion irresistibly in human life, and that the intellect, which claims to be supreme and to govern, finds itself baffled and confounded in ways that surprise it. And I have inferred from these facts that we do rightly and wisely in yielding ourselves to the lead of the spirit, and that the understanding has to follow and serve the spirit as best it can. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Divine Life in Man: And Other Sermons Often as any soul comes under the regenerating power of the gospel and is born into the kingdom. This is what is brought out with an almost start ling distinctness in the group of passages standing at the head of this discourse. Man, like God, is per sonal and spiritual. He has the source of his being in God. He has come into life in virtue of the breath Of God in his soul. He has a certain intel lectual and moral likeness to God; and by cultivation and discipline this likeness may be advanced till his thought and will reflect, in some measure, the thought and will of God, and all his movements and desires are in the direction of God. He may yield his whole nature - all his powers and faculties - up to the guid ance of God, and the current of an exalted fellow ship may flow back and forth between his heart and the heart Of God. Having fallen out of this fellow ship, and lost this divine life, through sin, he may yet find it again through faith in the Son of God, who came into the world for the express purpose of renewing men dead in trespasses and sins, and re storing the marred image in which they were made. He may have inward witness that God is his Father, and that he is God's child. He may know and eh joy God. These are general statements covering the case. The further development of the subject will be pro moted best by asking two or three questions. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. These sermons have been so heartily welcomed, both by the congregation and by the community, that the Committee on Men's Work is glad to have some of them pub lished in permanent form. They have been preached during what history is likely to pro nounce the most important years in the life of our nation, and local references and historical suggestions are allowed to stand as when first printed. For ye are all the children of God by faith in Christ Jesus. For as many of you as have been baptized into Christ have put on Christ. There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither bond nor free there is neither male nor female: for ye are all one in Christ Jesus. And if ye be Christ's, then are ye Abraham's seed, and heirs according to the promise. Wherever opposite views are held with warmth by religious-minded men, we may take for granted that there is some higher truth which embraces both. All high truth is the union of two contradictories. Thus predestination and freewill are opposites: and the truth does not lie between these two, but in a higher reconciling truth which leaves both true. So with the opposing views of baptism. Men of equal spirituality are ready to sacrifice all to assert, or to deny, the doctrine of baptismal regeneration. And the truth, I believe, will be found, not in some middle, moderate, timid doctrine, which skilfully avoids extremes, but in a truth larger than either of these Opposite views, which is the basis of both, and which really is that for which each party tenaciously clings to its own View, as to a matter of life and death. The present occasion1 only requires us to examine three Views. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Invisible Things, and Other Sermons Rome, refers to the universal decay of morality and contrasts the elevation and excellence of the Gospel with the practices of paganism. He also intimates that the Gentiles could have done better and acquired cleaner, clearer, and more just ideas concerning God and His moral government had they used their moral sense with care and fidelity. He does not by any means say that the Gospel is superfluous, or that man has by nature all the data and materials he requires; but only that, Without the Christian reve lation, the heathen world might have done better in the Sphere of religious conceptions and of practical conduct. Paul looks upon the world at large from the standpoint of a Jew; and although his own com patriots were no paragons, there had yet been a moral elevation, simplicity, and purity of doctrine. Purchasers can usually download a free scanned copy of the original book (without typos) from the publisher. Not indexed. Not illustrated. 1907 edition. Excerpt: ... unless they fictitiously adopt the language they hear, they are painfully conscious that they know nothing of them as yet. They hear of a depression for sin which they certainly have never experienced--a joy in God, making His service and His house the gate of heaven; and they know that it is excessively irksome to them--a confidence, trust, and assurance, of which they know nothing--till they take for granted what has been told them, that they are not God's children. Taught that they are as yet of the world, they live as the world--they carry out their education, which has dealt with them as children of the devil, to be converted: and children of the devil they become. Of these two views, the last is by far the most certain to undermine Christianity in every Protestant country. The first at least assumes God's badge, an universal one; and in education is so far right, practically: only wrong in the decision of the question how the child was created a child of God. But the second assumes a false, partial, party-badge--election, views, feelings. No wonder that the children of such religionists proverbially turn out ill. III. We pass to the doctrine of the Bible and (I believe) of the Church. Christ came to reveal a Name--the Father. He abolished the exclusive "my," and He taught us to pray "our Father." He proclaimed God the Father--man the Son: revealed that the Son of Man is also the Son of God. Man--as man, God's child. He came to redeem the world from that ignorance of the relationship which had left them in heart aliens and unregenerate. Human nature, therefore, became, viewed in Christ, a holy thing and divine. The Revelation is a common humanity, sanctified in God. The appearance of the Son of God is the sanctification of the human...

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Sermons to Students and Thoughtful Persons That those, whose sphere in life requires a more exact and extensive mental training than the majority of people, should entertain right views upon religion, and should, perhaps more than any, possess the religious spirit, needs only to be stated. For their own sakes, reli gion is the chief concern, and in respect to others, over whom they will some day exer cise a very deep and lasting influence, it is a serious evil if the best trained minds of the community are either hostile or indifferent to the claims of God. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Fruit of the Spirit and Other Sermons From a Greylock Pulpit Most of these sermons were delivered between january and June of eighteen hundred and ninety-seven. They first appeared in a weekly publication called A Greylock Pulpit. It seems fitting to give a few reasons which led to their publication. Surrounded with machinery for what is known as Institutional church work, I desired to make emphatic the inspiration which belongs to the living Word. Having already in use a sufficiently elaborate order of worship, multiplied organizations, a parish house with gymnasium and amusement rooms, a young men's literary society, all splendid channels for energy; the pulpit as a herald may speak to the indifferent life of the community and induce interest by means of the impersonal page. In the half-hour or more given to the sermon, there is much condensation, which is not in vain. If opportunity for review be given the people from week to week. I saw a further reason in the good chance to revive old friendships. One who has changed his residence, the old homestead for the college, the college for the world, one church, town or country for another, what ever his gain, must keenly feel the loss of separation. Perhaps my ser mons may prove a long, rough pole, by which I shall still save drowning friendships. Please note that the series was not christened The, but A Grey lock Pulpit. The title was given me by Greylock Mountain itself. The base begins beneath my study and the mountain rises to a height of four thousand feet of beauty and strength. On a clear day at least four states, New York, New Hampshire, Vermont, Massachusetts and perhaps Connecticut can be seen from this summit. Greylock is Berkshire's Mount Zion. If mountaineers are always freemen, mountain preach ers ought to be free preachers. This Taconic mountain has been the object of much contention among geologists. However, their polemic was of the last decade. Theological strife is happily passing, and the church of today has earnestly begun to study sociology. Greylock has lately been made a type by geologists. The churches of our valley are slowly conforming to a higher ideal. Again Greylock is a deposit, not the result of volcanic action like the lower and opposite Hoosac range. The Greylock message therefore is that our social changes ought to be educational and gradual rather than fierce and revolutionary.
