Book excerpt: Excerpt from Spiritual Guidance in the Experience of the Society of Friends I propose in the first place to refer brie y to the development of the Catholic idea of the church, - outward, visible, universal, - and to the change effected by the Reformation in re moving the seat of religious authority from without to within, from the church to the Christian consciousness. The systematising of Protestantism has then to be alluded to, by way of preface to the vital experience which led Fox and the Friends to emphasise the authority of the Light within. My chief aim is to examine the strength and weakness of this position as shown in the early history of Friends, and to trace the hardening processes by which spiritual guidance became confined even in a church which based itself upon this guidance. Certain lessons of importance, not only to the Society of Friends but to the church at large, result from the experience of the past, and I have accordingly ventured a restatement of the question of spiritual guidance in the light of this experience and from the intellectual standpoint of the present day. The unique witness of Friends on this subject and the rich suggestiveness of their experience should give this chapter of church history an interest to a wide circle of Christians. Book excerpt: Our Life is Love describes the transformational spiritual journey of the first Quakers, who turned to the Light of Christ within and allowed it to be their guide. Many Friends today use different language, but are still called to make the same journey. In our time people seeking deeper access to the profound teachings of Christianity want more than just beliefs, they want direct experience. Focusing on ten elements of the spiritual journey, this book is a guide to a Spirit-filled life that affects this world. Quakers in the seventeenth century and today provide examples of people and communities living in the midst of the world whose radical understanding of Christ's teachings led them to become powerful agents of social change. The book offers a simple, clear explanation of the spiritual journey that is suitable not only for Quakers, but for all Christians, and for seekers wanting to better understand our spiritual experience and the fullness of God's call to us. The book would make an excellent focus for study groups. Marcelle Martin has led workshops at retreat centers and Quaker meetings across the United States. She served for four years as the resident Quaker Studies teacher at Pendle Hill and was a core teacher in the School of the Spirit program, The Way of Ministry. She is the author of the Pendle Hill pamphlets Invitation to a Deeper Communion and Holding One Another in the Light. In 2013 she was the Mullen Writing Fellow at Earlham School of Religion while working on this book.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There is a place that promises acceptance, spiritual growth, and friendship, but instead delivers criticism, abuse, and exploitation. A place that declares marriages will be strengthened, treasured, and protected, but instead weakens, diminishes, and marginalizes them. A place that claims to obey the word of God, but in practice weaponizes the word against those who disagree or doubt. A place where the good news of a tenderhearted, loving Savior is blurred by leaders who are controlling, traumatizing, and self-serving. A place that calls loudly to the storm-tossed at sea, only to lure them to the rocks where they flounder and fall apart. A place that appeared to be a house of friendship but was a place of betrayal. That place might be a Christian church. It might be a cult. It is probably both. In the House of Friends: Understanding and Healing from Spiritual Abuse in the Christian Church is written for survivors of abusive churches, their families and friends, and all who want to understand spiritual abuse and help the abused. Dr. Garrett is a long-term pastor of a diverse, urban congregation and combines personal experience, sound academic research, and pastoral theology to address a poorly understood, rarely admitted problem today—spiritual abuse in Christian churches.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As Quakers expressed and reflected upon their experience of life under the guidance of the spirit of Christ, they developed a rich vocabulary to describe those experiences. This vocabulary played an important role in Quaker spiritual formation and community life from the beginning of the movement in 1650, and continues today as modern seekers wrestle with describing their experiences. When Bill Taber died in 2005, he left behind notes on a project: "A language for the inward landscape." Key phrases provide important insights into the nature of inward experience over time and can help people explore their spiritual experience with an enriched vocabulary. Brian Drayton compiled these notes and expanded them. Readers (both Quaker and non-Quaker) may find this language conveys a distinctive "alternative Christianity" combining mystical and prophetic experiences with God and in community.

Book excerpt: Quakers live our faith with integrity. In religious education, community events, or study groups, with young and old alike, listen with your 'child's mind' to embody Quaker practice, curious to see what will happen. Consider Quaker roles of minister, steward, and witness; experiences of convincement and conviction; experimenting with the Living Spirit in our lives; and engaging in an ecology of essential Quaker practices: worship, spiritual companions, Monthly Meeting, meetings of ministers, stewards, or witnesses, Yearly Meeting Faith and Practice, and bearing witness. This book and video series "encourages Friends to move beyond a cognitive faith into an experiential, everyday, in-every-way kind of Quaker faith--walking in this world as a Friend." Beth Collea "Amazing work capturing the true essence of Quakerism in words that speak across various experiences--radical, unsettling, real. I like the insistence that talking about it is not the same as experiencing it." Marty Grundy "This is profound, brilliant work." Sita Diehl
