Book excerpt: Excerpt from Spiritual Despotism The alliance between Church and State is loudly denounced as the source and means of spiritual despotism. But history shows that sacerdotal tyranny may reach its height while the Church is struggling against a hostile civil power. No practical inference therefore, professing to be drawn from the testimony of facts, can be valid, unless what has been incidental to hierarchical usurpation is clearly distinguished from what was its essential principle. Otherwise, we may unwittingly promote the very abuses we wish to exclude; and maybe led moreover to spurn the most important of all the axioms that should give law to the social system. Again; the maintenance of the clergy through the medium of a legal provision has, with as little regard to the genuine lessons of experience, been assigned as a chief cause of the corruption of Christianity. No allegation can stand more fully contradicted by the records of antiquity than does this; nor can any thing be more easy than to disprove the assertion. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Spiritual Despots by historian of religion J. Barton Scott zeroes in on the quaint term "priestcraft" to track anticlerical polemics in Britain and South Asia during the colonial period. Scott's aim is to show how anticlerical rhetoric spread through the colonies alongside ideas about modern secular subjectivity. Through close readings of texts in English, Hindi, and Gujarati, he shows in compelling detail how the critique of priestly conspiracy gave rise to a new ideal of the self-disciplining subject and a vision of modern Hinduism that was based on unmediated personal experience and self-regulation rather than priestly tutelary power. Spiritual Despots offers a new perspective on what some scholars have called "Protestant Hinduism," and, more broadly, contributes to the emerging field of "post-secular" studies by shedding light on the colonial genealogy of secular subjectivity.

Book excerpt: "The Spirit of Despotism" is a political treatise written by Vicesimus Knox, an English essayist and clergyman, first published in 1795. The book is a critical examination of the nature and consequences of despotism, exploring its various forms and manifestations throughout history. Knox begins by defining despotism as a form of government characterized by the absolute power and arbitrary rule of a single individual or group. He argues that despotism is inherently oppressive and tyrannical, depriving individuals of their natural rights and freedoms. Drawing upon examples from ancient and modern history, Knox identifies the key features of despotism, including censorship, surveillance, and the suppression of dissent. He explores how despotic rulers use fear, intimidation, and propaganda to maintain control over their subjects, creating a climate of suspicion and obedience. One of the central themes of "The Spirit of Despotism" is the relationship between despotism and corruption. Knox argues that despotism breeds corruption by concentrating power in the hands of a small elite, who use their influence for personal gain at the expense of the common good. Throughout the book, Knox also examines the role of religion, law, and education in perpetuating or challenging despotism. He argues that a free press, an independent judiciary, and an educated citizenry are essential safeguards against despotism, providing checks and balances to prevent the abuse of power. "The Spirit of Despotism" is not only a critique of authoritarian rule but also a call to action for citizens to resist tyranny and defend their liberties. Knox advocates for political reform, constitutional government, and the promotion of civic virtue as antidotes to the corrosive influence of despotism. Although written more than two centuries ago, "The Spirit of Despotism" remains relevant today as a warning against the dangers of unchecked power and a reminder of the enduring struggle for freedom and democracy. Knox's insights into the nature of despotism continue to resonate with readers, offering valuable lessons for confronting authoritarianism in all its forms.

Book excerpt: Montesquieu is famous as a tireless critic of despotism, which he associates overtly with Asia and the Middle East and not with the apparently more moderate Western models of governance found throughout Europe. However, Vickie B. Sullivan argues that a creaful reading of Montesquieu's enormously influential The Spirit of the Law reveals the surprising result that he recognizes that Europe itself is susceptible to despotic practices - and that the threat emanates not from the East but rather from certain despotic ideas that inform Western institutions and practices. Sullivan guides readers through Montesquieu's sometimes veiled yet sharply critical accounts of Machiavelli, Hobbes, Aristotle, and Plato, as well as various Christian thinkers have brough forth despotic ideas in the form, for example, of brutal Machiavellianism, of Hobbes's justifications for the rule of one, of Plato's reasoning that denied slaves the right of natural defense, and of the Christian teachings that equated heresy with treason. Such ideas, Montesquieu shows, inform such revered European institutions as the French monarchy and the Roman Catholic Church. In this new reading of Montesquieu's masterwork, Sullivan corrects the misconception that it offers simple, objective observations, showing it to be instead a powerful critique of European politics that would become remarkably and regrettably prescient after Montesquieu's death, when despotism repeatedly emerged in Europe with virulent intensity. -- from dust jacket.

XT has been long observed, that none are more desirous of increasing their property than they who have abundance. The greatest misers are those who possess the greatest riches. jNone are fonder of the world than they who have engrossed a large share of it. If tlrey should acknowledge that they have enough money, yet they cannot but confess, at the same time, that they think themselves entitled, in consequence of their property, to civil honors, power and distinction. They have a kind of claim, in their own opinion, to court favor; especially as they are ready to use the influence, which their riches give them, in support of any minister for the time being, and in the general extension of royal prerogative. Are such men likely to be independent members of a senate, honestly following the dictates of their judgment or conscience, and consulting no interest but that of Man in general, and the people in particular, by whom they are deputed? There are no mengreedier of gain than such men, and none more attached to those vain honors, which a mi nister bestows in order to facilitate the movements of his political machine. None will rake so deeply in the dirt to pick up a penny as a rich miser; none will contend more eagerly for a feather in the cap, than those whose minds are weak, empty, and attached to the world by the consciousness of being. in great measure, its proprietors. But what is it to me, as an elector, that the man who solicits my v.pte has, by great cunning, sordid arts, and insatiable avarice, accumulated great riches? Has wisdom. has virtue, has knowledge, has philanthropiy increased with his increasing fortune?..
