Book Synopsis Spiritual Calculations by : Christine Cooper-Rompato
Download or read book Spiritual Calculations written by Christine Cooper-Rompato and published by Penn State Press. This book was released on 2021-12-13 with total page 205 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Medieval English sermons teem with examples of quantitative reasoning, ranging from the arithmetical to the numerological, and regularly engage with numerical concepts. Examining sermons written in Middle English and Latin, this book reveals that popular English-speaking audiences were encouraged to engage in a wide range of numerate operations in their daily religious practices. Medieval sermonists promoted numeracy as a way for audiences to appreciate divine truth. Their sermons educated audiences in a hybrid form of numerate practice—one that relied on individuals’ pragmatic quantitative reasoning, which, when combined with spiritual interpretations of numbers provided by the preacher, created a deep and rich sense in which number was the best way to approach the sacred mysteries of the world as well as to learn how one could best live as a Christian. Analyzing both published and previously unpublished sermons and sermon cycles, Christine Cooper-Rompato explores the use of numbers, arithmetic, and other mathematical operations to better understand how medieval laypeople used math as a means to connect with God. Spiritual Calculations enhances our understanding of medieval sermons and sheds new light on how receptive audiences were to this sophisticated rhetorical form. It will be welcomed by scholars of Middle English literature, medieval sermon studies, religious experience, and the history of mathematics.

Download or read book THE LUCK FORMULA written by Thomas Jacob and published by Thomas Jacob. This book was released on 2020-08-24 with total page 100 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Could there be a formula for luck? Most of my life, my friends, family, co-workers and society, in general, made me believe that some people were lucky and others were not. During my college days, my friends used to point out the ‘rich kids’ who came to classes driving expensive cars. They were the lucky ones, I was told. During holidays they used to vacation with their families in quaint European towns. And, of course, they were always surrounded by pretty girls. The rest of us, according to my friends, were the unlucky ones. It wasn’t just money. Some people seemed to be happier than others. Some people seemed to have fewer problems. And the reason, according to everybody, was always ‘luck’. Over the years, as I started learning about the mind, I realized that luck is something that can be controlled. There are ways of thinking and habit patterns that can make you luckier. Once you begin to apply these techniques, it will seem like miracles are happening to you. This book is about The Luck Formula. Book Synopsis The Science of Successful Living by : Raymond Charles Barker
Download or read book The Science of Successful Living written by Raymond Charles Barker and published by DeVorss & Company. This book was released on 2014-08-01 with total page 145 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Is successful living a science? Is it luck? Or is successful living a process that starts in your own mind? Dr. Barker writes: The creative power in life is mind. That is its primary quality and its most basic function. The universe is the result of a mathematical thinker, thinking mathematically. . . The universe is actually a mental system. Its primary nature is the process of ideas becoming form. Every fact in your world is also an idea in your mind. To get new things in your world you must have new ideas in your consciousness. Few people do enough abstract thinking to create new ideas in their minds . . . The infiltration of new ideas in the mind is essential to healthy living. You exist in an infinite Mind which offers you an ever expanding variety of ideas. Ideas are seeking to be born in your mind. The ideas to a successful life are there . . . waiting your acknowledgement and direction to be expressed. There's no luck involved. First published in 1957, this updated edition provides a new look and contemporary voice to a prominent and respected New Thought Classic.
Book Synopsis Spiritual Practices for the Brain by : Anne Kertz Kernion
Download or read book Spiritual Practices for the Brain written by Anne Kertz Kernion and published by Loyola Press. This book was released on 2020-10-15 with total page 168 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 2021 Illumination Book Awards, Silver Medal: Health/Wellness For centuries, spiritual and meditative practices have helped people become more calm, focused, and happy. Christian saints such as John of the Cross and Teresa of Avila encouraged habits of the heart and soul. Now we know that such habits benefit the whole person. In Spiritual Practices for the Brain, Anne Kertz Kernion (founder of Cards by Anne) relies on the most current research to link spiritual practices to improved health. Relying on her education and experience in brain development, positive psychology, and theology, Anne is able to relate seemingly simple practices such as focused breathing, gardening, practicing kindness, or going for a walk with powerful results for your mind, body, and soul. Her presentation is friendly and readable, and each chapter explores a specific topic such as the Breath, Gratitude, and Self-Compassion, and includes simple practices for readers to try. As an artist and an exercise instructor, she exudes encouragement and hope for the person learning a new practice or revisiting an old one.

Book Synopsis Transformations of Mind by : Michael McGhee
Download or read book Transformations of Mind written by Michael McGhee and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2000-04-28 with total page 308 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book offers a conception of philosophy as a form of self-enquiry which begins not in reflection, but in silence and meditation, conceived as conditions for the emergence and cessation of contending states of mind which influence perception and action. The philosopher thus becomes a kind of cartographer of a shifting interior landscape. This underlying perspective explains the personal nature of the writing and its mixing of genres. The book draws on both the Greek and Buddhist traditions, recognising that it is time for Western thinkers to acknowledge and respond to an intercultural canon. It aims to integrate ethics and a non-theistic philosophy of religion through the medium of aesthetics, mapping Buddhist 'mindfulness' and the Greek virtues and vices of temperance and licentiousness, continence and incontinence, onto an account of the development of moral sentiments and their relation to practical judgement in the context of oppressive political and social realities.
Book Synopsis Spiritual Economies by : Daromir Rudnyckyj
Download or read book Spiritual Economies written by Daromir Rudnyckyj and published by Cornell University Press. This book was released on 2011-08-15 with total page 305 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Europe and North America Muslims are often represented in conflict with modernity—but what could be more modern than motivational programs that represent Islamic practice as conducive to business success and personal growth? Daromir Rudnyckyj's innovative and surprising book challenges widespread assumptions about contemporary Islam by showing how moderate Muslims in Southeast Asia are reinterpreting Islam not to reject modernity but to create a "spiritual economy" consisting of practices conducive to globalization. Drawing on more than two years of research in Indonesia, most of which took place at state-owned Krakatau Steel, Rudnyckyj shows how self-styled "spiritual reformers" seek to enhance the Islamic piety of workers across Southeast Asia and beyond. Deploying vivid description and a keen ethnographic sensibility, Rudnyckyj depicts a program called Emotional and Spiritual Quotient (ESQ) training that reconfigures Islamic practice and history to make the religion compatible with principles for corporate success found in Euro-American management texts, self-help manuals, and life-coaching sessions. The prophet Muhammad is represented as a model for a corporate CEO and the five pillars of Islam as directives for self-discipline, personal responsibility, and achieving "win-win" solutions. Spiritual Economies reveals how capitalism and religion are converging in Indonesia and other parts of the developing and developed world. Rudnyckyj offers an alternative to the commonly held view that religious practice serves as a refuge from or means of resistance against modernization and neoliberalism. Moreover, his innovative approach charts new avenues for future research on globalization, religion, and the predicaments of modern life.
