Winnipeg, the capital city of Manitoba, becomes the locale for Jay's experiences with the gay community, the occult, native shamanism, the drug culture, vegetarianism and a rich girlfriend. Through his experiences with his friends and the acceptance of two older men Jay matures from the egocentricity of youth to a burgeoning social conscience as he learns to cope with his homophobic feelings and the challenges of his new world. The nineteen vegetarian recipes included in the appendix are designed to be nourishing and enjoyable for nonvegetarians as well.

No longer able to dismiss her daughter's gifts as childish imagination, Samantha becomes determined to protect her child by learning everything she can about the world beyond the veil. This is not your typical ghost story, nor is it fiction. Once a series of blog entries documenting Samantha's experiences, Ghosts Like Bacon soon caught hold of the public's attention and has been read over four thousand times in thirty-two different countries."Equally funny, sorrowful, and heartwarming, this book balances everything - personal stories, helpful tips, and deep musings - in a delightful read that is simultaneously casually profound and inherently charming. Ghosts Like Bacon is one-of-a-kind and well worth the experience - whether you believe in ghosts or not."

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Pentecostalism is one of the fastest-growing religious movements in the world. In Canada, it is the most rapidly growing Christian group among Indigenous people, with approximately one in ten Pentecostals in the country being Indigenous. Pentecostalism has become a religious force in many Indigenous communities, where congregations are most often led by Indigenous ministers – an achievement that took many decades. The Holy Spirit and the Eagle Feather traces the development of Indigenous Pentecostalism in Canada. Exploring the history of twentieth-century missionization, with particular attention to the Pentecostal Assemblies of Canada’s Northland Mission, founded in 1943, Aaron Ross shows how the denomination’s Euro-Canadian leaders, who believed themselves to be supporters of Indigenous-led churches, struggled to relinquish control of mission management and finances. Drawing on interviews with contemporary figures in the movement, he describes how Indigenous Pentecostals would come to challenge the mission’s eurocentrism over decades, eventually entering positions of leadership in the church. This process required them to confront the painful vestiges of colonialism and to grapple with the different philosophies and theologies of Pentecostalism and Indigenous traditional spiritualities. In doing so they indigenized the movement and forged a new identity, as Indigenous and Pentecostal. Indigenous Pentecostals now occupy key roles in the church and serve as political, cultural, and economic leaders in their communities. The Holy Spirit and the Eagle Feather tells the story of how they overcame the church’s colonial impulses to become religious leaders, as well as agents for decolonization and reconciliation.

Book excerpt: There is a moment in Miss Jay's life when she stops looking at the world and starts truly seeing it. She begins to notice strange and miraculous things gifts from the universe to one who would embrace them as an absolute truth. Birds and animals appear at significant moments, sharing wisdom and messages and allowing Miss Jay to understand how all life is connected. She forms special friendships with three very special birds: Bindi, a rainbow lorikeet with a feathered dot on her forehead; Kooky, a kookaburra with great spiritual insight; and Master Zen, the Magpie who holds shamanic energy and is connected to spiritual elders. Soon, the birds and animals reveal answers about truth, happiness, purpose, meaning, and even God. Miss Jay's travels take her to the Red Centre of Australia to meet with the Grand Mother Rainbow Serpent at Uluru and to the depths of the Great Barrier Reef. There, she discovers a Crystal Light City and makes a new friend Hira the great humpback whale. Wise souls know that there is a need to balance the elements of earth, air, water, fire, and ether within our own Chakra systems, as well as around us. Isis, Osiris, and Horus appear and bring through words of encouragement and guidance. Why do all the animals seem to know about Miss Jay? What is her sacred mission? Who is Vargo? Friendships are rediscovered and bonds secured as they all work together to help Miss Jay find the answers to the biggest questions she's ever asked.

Book excerpt: Look out for the original series—starring Peyton List, Brent Rivera, Liana Liberato, Ajiona Alexus, and Dylan Sprayberry—now streaming on Hulu! Riverdale meets Final Destination in this fast-paced and deliciously creepy novel about an innocent game that turns deadly at a high school sleepover. It was supposed to be a game… Junior year is shaping up to be the best of McKenna Brady’s life. After a transformative summer, McKenna is welcomed into the elite group of popular girls at Weeping Willow High, led by the gorgeous Olivia Richmond. For the first time in a long time, things are looking up. But everything changes the night of Olivia’s Sweet Sixteen sleepover. Violet, the mysterious new girl in town, suggests the girls play a game during which Violet makes up elaborate, creepily specific stories about the violent ways the friends will die. Though it unsettles McKenna, it all seems harmless at the time. Until a week later, when Olivia dies…exactly as Violet predicted. As Violet rises to popularity and steps into the life Olivia left unfinished, McKenna becomes convinced Olivia’s death wasn’t just a coincidence, especially when a ghost haunting her bedroom keeps leaving clues that point to Violet. With the help of her cute neighbor, Trey, McKenna pledges to get to the bottom of Violet’s secrets and true intentions before it’s too late. Because it’s only a matter of time before more lives are lost.

Book excerpt: Responding to the rapid spread of the Ghost Dance among tribes of the western United States in the early 1890s, James Mooney set out to describe and understand the phenomenon. He visited Wovoka, the Ghost Dance prophet, at his home in Nevada and traced the progress of the Ghost Dance from place to place, describing the ritual and recording the distinctive song lyrics of seven separate tribes. His classic work (first published in 1896 and here reprinted in its entirety for the first time) includes succinct cultural and historical introductions to each of those tribal groups and depicts the Ghost Dance among the Sioux, the fears it raised of an Indian outbreak, and the military occupation of the Sioux reservations culminating in the tragedy at Wounded Knee. Seeking to demonstrate that the Ghost Dance was a legitimate religious movement, Mooney prefaced his study with a historical survey of comparable millenarian movements among other American Indian groups. In addition to his work on the Ghost Dance, James Mooney is best remembered for his extraordinarily detailed studies of the Cherokee Indians of the Southeast and the Kiowa and other tribes of the southern plains, and for his advocacy of American Indian religious freedom.

Book excerpt: Differences are gorgeously illustrated in a heartwarming picture book about a colorless peacock who learns to love himself in a jungle full of color. Mo has always felt a little different. While all the other peacocks grew bright, bold, beautiful feathers in rich greens and vibrant blues, Mo's feathers grew in a snowy white. And even though Mo's friends try to include him in their playtime, Mo doesn't like to be reminded that he's different from his friends. But when a storm threatens to ruin the group's annual celebration, Mo must learn to stand tall, strut his stuff, and shake his brilliantly glowing tail feathers--in a way only he can--to help his friends and set things right. From debut author Sita Singh, and brought to life by Stephanie Fizer Coleman, comes a story about finding strength in the things that make us different, and beauty in all its forms.
