Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The world to which the Gospel of Mark introduces its reader is a world of conflicts and suspense, enigmas and secrets, questions and overturning of evidence, irony and surprise. Its principal actor, Jesus, is perplexing in the extreme. He is evidently so for the religious authorities who oppose him, but also for his disciples, who shift from incomprehension to opposition and flight. Questions of meaning, life and death, good and evil are continually broached. This narrative is a subtle invitation to enter into a new world, that of the coming Reign of God, in which the first are last and whoever wants to save his life must lose it. This commentary on the Gospel of Mark has been enthusiastically reviewed in the French edition as one of the best current commentaries on Mark. As a narrative critical commentary, it favors an interpretation of the Gospel that tries to grasp the dynamic of the text taken as a whole. Even if the technical vocabulary of narrative analysis is not used, and the main results of the historical-critical criticism, particularly those of redaction criticism, are not neglected, as the notes will reveal, it is narrative criticism that guides the proceedings.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In fifteen thorough chapters David Ewert surveys the whole range of New Testament authors to discover what they have to say on the Holy Spirit and what this means for the life of the believer and for the church. To add another book on the Holy Spirit to the great number available is a daunting undertaking, the author admits. One can only hope that by ordering the biblical materials in a new way, familiar truths will shine with new luster. Perhaps by bringing the relevant biblical passages to bear on the life of the church in our day old truths can be seen in a new light. The material is organizzed in three parts: (1) The Promise of the Spirit, considering all the passages of the Gospels that speak of the Holy Spirit; (2) The Coming of the Spirit, dealing with the Pentecostal outpouring of the Spirit in the book of Acts and the continual overflow of the Spirit in the expansion of the church; and (3) The Spirit in the Life of the Believer, studying what the apostles have to say about the Holy Spirit in the epistles. Many have instinctively sensed that the teaching of the New Testament on the Holy Spirit is a key that unlocks many doors, the author notes. Jesus likened the Spirit to the wind, with its mysterious and numinous character. Just as we can hear and feel the blowing of the wind, by God's grace we can experience the presence and the power of the Spirit, if we are willing to get in the path of God's wind.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This work first examines the theological streams of influence that constitute Brethren theology—Anabaptism and Radical Pietism—with particular focus given to key thinkers and leaders. It then explores the nuances of what came to be American Fundamentalism and Protestant Liberalism of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, which provide important context to the thought of J. Allen Miller (1866–1935), a central Ashland Brethren theologian of that period. Miller’s theology demonstrates sympathy with both poles of the theological spectrum but remains distinct as a thoughtful mediation between these two extremes. Miller’s theological approach, termed “Word-Spirit Communal Revelationalism,” consists in his particular theological epistemology and biblical hermeneutics. When Miller’s theological witness moves into conversation with American evangelicalism, it proves helpful for the Ashland Brethren as they engage with the contemporary American evangelical landscape. His witness assists Brethren and other American evangelicals in offering a corrective to several pathologies or distortions identified within American evangelicalism. His theological method assists the larger American evangelical movement with tools for mediation over against polarization.

Book excerpt: What are we to make of direct spiritual experience? Of accounts of going to heaven or meeting angels? Traditional science would call these hallucinations or delusions. Clinical psychologist Dr. Mark Yama argues the opposite. Through interviews with his patients, he shows that underneath the visions and experiences there is a unifying spiritual reality apart from the material world. One of the stories recounted in this book is the experience of a woman who could see the future. In a spiritual transport, she was taken to heaven where truths were revealed to her that she later discovered were already written in Gnostic scripture. Another woman lived a life marked by a spiritual sensitivity that defied materialist explanation. After she passed away of cancer, she came to inhabit the consciousness of another of Dr. Yama's patients in the form of a benign possession. These stories, and many others, argue for a deeper reality that places spirituality on an equal footing with the material world.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On its publication nearly 40 years ago, Christian Dogmatics, a two-volume survey of the twelve major loci of Christian doctrine, seemed destined to become a classic. It rapidly took its place among the top multi-volume theologies and became a foundational text for generations of theological and ministerial students. Each loci, treated from the perspective of the Lutheran tradition and deeply examined in terms of its biblical foundations, historical tradition, and contemporary significance, was written by a scholar wise beyond their years. Each of the six authors went on to have influential and esteemed teaching and writing careers. Here, presented together for the first time, are the two loci written by Robert Jenson for the project. In The Triune God, Jenson examines the Doctrine of God by way of "the fruit of liturgical and catechetical history." In The Holy Spirit, he undertakes Pneumatology. Helpful for students and scholars alike, this convenient assembly of Jenson's early work will broaden the impact of his thought for a new generation.
