Book excerpt: Inelastic scattering using polarized nucleon targets and polarized charged lepton beams allows the extraction of spin structure functions that provide information about the spin structure of the nucleon. A program designed to study such processes at low and intermediate Q2 for the proton and deuteron has been pursued by the CLAS Collaboration at Jefferson Lab since 1998. The data with high statistical precision and extensive kinematic coverage allows us to better constrain the polarized parton distributions and to accurately determine various moments of g1 as a function of Q2. The latest results are presented, illustrating our contribution to the world data, with comparisons of the data with NLO global fits, phenomenological models, chiral perturbation theory, the GDH and Bjorken sum rules, and tests of global duality.

Book excerpt: Two recent experiments in Hall A of Jefferson Lab have explored the spin structure of the neutron. Experiment E99-117 focused on measuring the neutron spin asymmetry A1(superscript n) to high precision at x = 0.33, 0.47 and 0.60 and Q2 = 2.7, 3.5 and 4.8 (GeV/c)2, respectively. A second experiment, E97-103, measured the polarized spin structure function g2(superscript n) at x (almost equal to) 0.2 for five values of the momentum transfer Q2 from 0.58 to 1.36 (GeV/c)2. Preliminary results from these experiments will be presented and compared to theoretical models.

Book excerpt: Inelastic scattering using polarized nucleon targets and polarized charged lepton beams allows the extraction of double and single spin asymmetries that provide information about the helicity structure of the nucleon. A program designed to study such processes at low and intermediate Q2 for the proton and deuteron has been pursued by the CLAS Collaboration at Jefferson Lab since 1998. Our inclusive data with high statistical precision and extensive kinematic coverage allow us to better constrain the polarized parton distributions and to accurately determine various moments of spin structure function g1 as a function of Q2. The latest results are shown, illustrating our contribution to the world data, with comparisons of the data with NLO global fits, phenomenological models, chiral perturbation theory and the GDH and Bjorken sum rules. The semi-inclusive measurements of single and double spin asymmetries for charged and neutral pions are also shown, indicating the importance of the orbital motion of quarks in understanding of the spin structure of the nucleon.
Book Synopsis Soft Spin Physics at Jefferson Laboratory by : Raffaella De Vita
Download or read book Soft Spin Physics at Jefferson Laboratory written by Raffaella De Vita and published by . This book was released on 2004 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An extensive experimental program to study spin physics at low and moderate four-momentum transfer, Q{sup 2}, is in progress at Jefferson Lab. In this regime, soft processes as resonance excitation and higher twist contribution play a dominant role and the measurement of spin observables is a fundamental tool to understand such phenomena and identify the relevant degrees of freedom. In these proceedings I will describe the ongoing experimental program and I will discuss preliminary and final results.

Book Synopsis Highlights and Perspectives of the JLab Spin Physics Program by :
Download or read book Highlights and Perspectives of the JLab Spin Physics Program written by and published by . This book was released on 2008 with total page 3 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nucleon spin structure has been an active, exciting and intriguing subject of interest for the last three decades. Recent precision spin-structure data from Jefferson Lab have significantly advanced our knowledge of nucleon structure in the valence quark (high-$x$) region and improved our understanding of higher-twist effects, spin sum rules and quark-hadron duality. First, results of spin sum rules and polarizabilities in the low to intermediate $Q^2$ region are presented. Comparison with theoretical calculations, in particular with Chiral Perturbation Theory (ChPT) calculations, are discussed. Surprising disagreements of ChPT calculations with experimental results on the generalized spin polarizability, $\delta_{LT}$, were found. Then, precision measurements of the spin asymmetry, $A_1$, in the high-$x$ region are presented. They provide crucial input for global fits to world data to extract polarized parton distribution functions. The up and down quark spin distributions.
Book Synopsis Spin Asymmetries for Exclusive and Semi-exclusive Reactions with CLAS. by :
Download or read book Spin Asymmetries for Exclusive and Semi-exclusive Reactions with CLAS. written by and published by . This book was released on 2005 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An extensive experimental program to measure the spin structure of the nucleons is being carried out with the CLAS detector at Jefferson Lab using a longitudinally polarized electron beam incident on a longitudinally polarized target. Spin degrees of freedom offer new tools to explore the baryon structure and test the many theoretical approaches that attempt to characterize it, such as effective Lagrangian models and transverse momentum dependent parton distributions. I will present preliminary results for single and double spin asymmetries for exclusive [pi][sup 0], [pi][sup +], and [eta] electroproduction in the resonance region compared with unitary isobar and dynamical models, as well as [rho] electroproduction for DIS kinematics. I will also report on an analysis of the semi-inclusive and exclusive channels where double and single spin asymmetries were used to study transverse momentum dependent parton distributions.

Book Synopsis Spin Structure of the Deuteron by : Nevzat Guler
Download or read book Spin Structure of the Deuteron written by Nevzat Guler and published by LAP Lambert Academic Publishing. This book was released on 2013-01 with total page 436 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The physics program with CLAS at Jefferson Lab has collected a large amount of data on the spin structure functions of the nucleon by using polarized electron beam directed on polarized NH3 and ND3 targets. In these experiments, the virtual photon asymmetry and the spin structure functions were measured with an unprecedented precision in a large kinematic range. The data help us to better understand the spin structure of the nucleon, especially in the transition region between hadronic and quark-gluon degrees of freedom. Therefore, it will be possible to put limits on quark-hadron duality, test pQCD predictions for the quark polarization at large Bjorken x, perform more precise calculations of higher-twist matrix elements in the framework of the Operator Product Expansion and get a glimpse of A1 at high x. In addition, using available proton and deuteron data together and utilizing a new unfolding technique, the spin structure functions for the neutron in the resonance region are extracted.
