Duality is observed when, at the same value of scaling variable x{sub bj}, the smooth scaling curve at high momentum transfer becomes an average over the resonances at lower momentum transfer. Jefferson Lab experiment 01-012 used the polarized 3He target in Hall A for an extraction of the neutron spin structure function g1(superscript n) and the virtual photon asymmetry A1(superscript n) in the resonance region over a Q2 range from 1.0 to 4.0 (GeV/c)2. Data from E01-012 combined with Deep Inelastic Scattering data will provide a test of quark-hadron duality predictions for g1(superscript n) and A1(superscript n). This will be one of the first tests of the spin and flavor dependence of quark-hadron duality. The demonstration of duality for spin structure functions will enable us to use the resonance data to study the nucleon spin structure in the large x{sub bj} region.

Book excerpt: From its early beginnings at SLAC in the 1970's, the study of nucleon spin structure using polarized lepton beams and polarized nucleon targets has become increasingly important in nuclear and particle physics, with current experiments at several of the world's high energy and nuclear physics laboratories (CERN, DESY, SLAC and Jefferson Lab) and with enormous related theoretical studies. The understanding of the fascinating but complicated problem of nucleon spin structure has progressed substantially, but fundamental questions remain and it can be confidently predicted that future activity will be high. The Erice Course on The Spin Structure of the Nucleon covered both the experimental and theoretical aspects of the subject, and this volume includes the lectures given at the School. In many cases the lecture material has been extended and updated by the authors. In addition, several recent publications on experimental work have been added in an appendix.

Book excerpt: Inclusive double spin asymmetries obtained by scattering polarized electrons off polarized protons and deuterons have been analyzed to address the issue of quark hadron duality in the polarized spin structure functions gp 1 and gd 1. A polarized electron beam, solid polarized NH3 and ND3 targets and the CEBAF Large Acceptance Spectrometer (CLAS) in Hall B were used to collect the data. The resulting gp 1 and gd 1 were averaged over the nucleon resonance energy region (M

Book excerpt: Although quark-hadron duality is well established for the spin-independent structure function, F{sub 2}{sup p}, hardly any information is available on the low Q{sup 2} scaling behavior of spin-structure functions. Recent experiments at Jefferson Lab measured the spin-structure function g1 in the nucleon resonance region for variety of targets. Global and local duality was observed for Q{sup 2} values above {approx} 2 (GeV/c){sup 2}.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This work is a translation of the German edition "Der Nukleonenspin als Ursache der starken Wechselwirkung". (Dec. 2020). The strong interaction is supposed to describe the forces which are active in the atomic nucleus between the nuclear building blocks. Until today, however, it has not been possible to design a theory free of contradictions. Instead, in the 1970s, the theory of "quantum chromodynamics" emerged, in which the name itself is based on an analogy. Just like the "color charges" mentioned as cause of the interaction. The question is only: Analogy to what and due to which energy? Because either it refers to the electric energy, then there would have to be some kind of electric parallel energy, but this is nonsensical. Or it doesn't refer to the electric energy, then it must be a form of energy which already exists. But quantum chromodynamics makes no statement about this. This QCD theory standing on shaky feet thus virtually challenges the contradiction. In order to oppose this very artificial theory with a down-to-earth one, it is important to keep in mind the basics of the known interactions. All particle systems can build up only if their particles have besides their energy also an opposite property by which they can interact. The simplest system is a binary system, e.g. a common salt crystal. The opposite properties are the electrically positive and negative charge of the ions. But which opposite property enables an interaction of the nucleons? It cannot be an electric charge. The astonishing answer to this question is given in this paper at the end. It also becomes clear that quantum chromodynamics is a fallacy. For a better understanding, contents of earlier publications of the author are partly included.

Book excerpt: We present experimental results of the first high-precision test of quark-hadron duality in the spin-structure function g_1 of the neutron and $^3$He using a polarized 3He target in the four-momentum-transfer-squared range from 0.7 to 4.0 (GeV/c)^2. Global duality is observed for the spin-structure function g_1 down to at least Q^2 = 1.8 (GeV/c)^2 in both targets. We have also formed the photon-nucleon asymmetry A_1 in the resonance region for 3He and found no strong Q^2-dependence above 2.2 (GeV/c)^2.

Book excerpt: New measurements of the spin structure functions of the proton and deuteron g1{sup p}(x, Q2) and g1{sup d}(x, Q2) in the nucleon resonance region are compared with extrapolations of target-mass-corrected next-to-leading-order (NLO) QCD fits to higher energy data. Averaged over the entire resonance region (W 2 GeV), the data and QCD fits are in good agreement in both magnitude and Q2 dependence for Q2 1.7 GeV2/c2. This ''global'' duality appears to result from cancellations among the prominent ''local'' resonance regions: in particular strong [sigma]{sub 3/2} contributions in the [Delta](1232) region appear to be compensated by strong [sigma]{sub 1/2} contributions in the resonance region centered on 1.5 GeV. These results are encouraging for the extension of NLO QCD fits to lower W and Q2 than have been used previously.

Book excerpt: Recent precision spin structure data from Jefferson Lab have significantly advanced our knowledge of nucleon structure in the valence quark (high-x) region and improved our understanding of higher-twist effects, spin sum rules and quark-hadron duality. First, results of a precision measurement of the neutron spin asymmetry, A[sub 1][sup n], in the high-x region are discussed. The new data shows clearly, for the first time, that A[sub 1][sup n] becomes positive at high x. They provide crucial input for the global fits to world data to extract polarized parton distribution functions. Preliminary results on A[sub 1][sup p] and A[sub 1][sup d] in the high-x region have also become available. The up and down quark spin distributions in the nucleon were extracted. The results for [Delta]d/d disagree with the leading-order pQCD prediction assuming hadron helicity conservation. Then, results of a precision measurement of the g[sub 2][sup n] structure function to study higher-twist effects are presented. The data show a clear deviation from the lead-twist contribution, indicating a significant higher-twist (twist-3 or higher) effect. The second moment of the spin structure functions and the twist-3 matrix element d[sub 2][sup n] results were extracted at a high Q[sup 2] of 5 GeV[sup 2] from the measured A[sub 2][sup n] in the high-x region in combination with existing world data and compared with a Lattice QCD calculation. Results for d[sub 2][sup n] at low-to-intermediate Q[sup 2] from 0.1 to 0.9 GeV[sup 2] were also extracted from the JLab data. In the same Q[sup 2] range, the Q[sup 2] dependence of the moments of the nucleon spin structure functions was measured, providing a unique bridge linking the quark-gluon picture of the nucleon and the coherent hadronic picture. Sum rules and generalized forward spin polarizabilities were extracted and compared with Chiral Perturbation Theory calculations and phenomenological models. Finally, preliminary results on the resonance spin structure functions in the Q[sup 2] range from 1 to 4 GeV[sup 2] were presented, which, in combination with DIS data, will enable a detailed study of the quark-hadron duality in spin structure functions.

Book excerpt: While perturbative QCD methods fully describe experimental results at high energies, and chiral perturbation theory is the low energy effective theory of the strong interactions, a form of duality is observed connecting these two regimes. In these intermediate kinematics, a wide variety of reactions are observed which can be described simultaneously by single particle (quark) scattering, and by exclusive resonance (hadron) scattering. The contributions in this proceedings volume discuss recent and existing results, and aim to foster current and future research, investigating the phenomenon of quark-hadron duality. This unique volume contains research work by scientists from different arenas of hadronic physics, dealing with different manifestations of quark-hadron duality. Sample Chapter(s). Book excerpt: One of the biggest challenges in the study of the nucleon structure is the understanding of the transition from partonic degrees of freedom to hadronic degrees of freedom. In 1970, Bloom and Gilman noticed that structure function data taken at SLAC in the resonance region average to the scaling curve of deep inelastic scattering (DIS). Early theoretical interpretations suggested that these two very different regimes can be linked under the condition that the quark-gluon and quark-quark interactions are suppressed. Substantial efforts are ongoing to investigate this phenomenon both experimentally and theoretically. Quark-hadron duality has been confirmed for the unpolarized structure function F2 of the proton and the deuteron using data from the experimental Hall C at Jefferson Lab (JLab). Indications of duality have been seen for the proton polarized structure function g1 and the virtual photon asymmetry A1 at JLab Hall B and HERMES. Because of the different resonance behavior, it is expected that the onset of duality for the neutron will happen at lower momentum transfer than for the proton. Now that precise spin structure data in the DIS region are available at large x, data in the resonance region are greatly needed in order to test duality in spin-dependent structure functions. The goal of experiment E01-012 was to provide such data on the neutron (3He) in the moderate momentum transfer (Q2) region, 1.0

Book excerpt: The study of N∗s can provide us with critical insights into the nature of QCD in the confinement domain. The keys to progress in this domain are the identification of its important degrees of freedom and the effective forces between them. The nucleon is the simplest system in which the nonabelian character of QCD is manifest. There are Nc quarks in a baryon because there are Nc colors, and as a consequence Gell-Mann and Zweig were forced to introduce the quarks in order to describe the octet and decuplet baryons. This volume gives a status report on the recent experimental and theoretical results in the field of nucleon resonance physics. A wealth of new high precision data was presented from facilities around the world, such as BES, BNL, ELSA, GRAAL, JLab, MAMI, MIT/Bates, SPring8, and Yerevan. Particular emphasis was laid on polarization degrees of freedom and large acceptance detectors as precision tools for studying small but important transition amplitudes, and the helicity (spin) structure of the nucleon. There were new results describing the nucleon resonance structure on the basis of quantum chromodynamics, either directly in terms of quarks and gluons by means of lattice gauge theory, or in terms of hadrons in the framework of chiral field theories. A status report on duality showed the surprising connections between the physics of the low energy nucleon resonance region and the realm of quark structure functions in deep inelastic scattering. Finally, this volume contains a summary report of the BRAG workshop, devoted to the analysis of baryon resonances.

The experiment ran successfully in early 2003 at Jefferson Lab in Hall B. It was an inclusive measurement of longitudinally polarized electrons scattering from a longitudinally or transversely polarized sup3/supHe target. Asymmetries and cross section differences were measured in order to extract the sup3/supHe spin structure function gsub1/sub and virtual photon asymmetry Asub1/sub in the resonance region. A test of quark-hadron duality has then been performed for the sup3/supHe and neutron structure functions. The study of spin duality for the neutron will provide a better understanding of the mechanism of the strong interaction. Moreover, if duality is well understood, our resonance data will bring information on the high x region where theoretical predictions for A
