Book excerpt: Many animals, such as the golden Lion Tamarin and the Kihansi Spray Toad, have been rescued from the brink of extinction through captive breeding and release programs. Although such programs are proving successful many wild type behavioral deficiencies have been recognized in the captive bred animals. Multiple species of spider monkey have been listed among the world's most endangered primates, yet there is hope for this genus because they are common attractions in zoo's around the world, many of which already participate in captive breeding programs. Although spider monkeys are common zoo attractions, providing these animals with an appropriate habitat is near impossible. Wild spider monkeys prefer the emergent layers of rainforest canopies and typically maintain an extensive home range. They characteristically travel through the canopy using various modes of tail assisted suspensory locomotion, and frequently forage and rest using sitting postures and various modes of tail-assisted hanging postures (Youlatos, 2008). Zoo habitats that lack the appropriate space and substrate limit the animals' ability to engage in wild-type locomotor and suspensory behaviors. The El Paso Zoo houses a family group of five spider monkeys (Ateles geoffroyi) ranging in age from 21 to 37 years old, all of which were born at the zoo. The habitat is primarily terrestrial, with a three story platform that connects to a model tree stump with two horizontally strung ropes. Preliminary observations of this group identified that terrestrial quadrupedal walking is the most common mode of locomotion and sitting is the most common feeding behavior. This project was designed to evaluate the effectiveness of an enrichment device designed to solicit wild-type suspensory behaviors from the El Paso spider monkey troop. A statistical analysis of focal animal behavior observations prior to and following introduction of the device indicates that the device did not significantly change the monkey's overall use of suspensory behaviors. Yet the types of suspensory locomotor and postural modes were shown to increase through ad libitum observation of the device. Specifically, the use of tail-arm brachiation and varied hanging postures increased, and leap and drop, two behavior categories never before observed were documented. The enrichment device tested in this project was successful in soliciting some wild-type suspensory behaviors from a captive group of spider monkeys. Continued research into goal-oriented enrichment devices is recommended in order to provide captive spider monkeys the ability to engage in their full range of wild-type behaviors in habitats with limited space.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is number two in a series for Primates in Fragments. In this volume, ten years after the first http://www.springer.com/social+sciences/anthropology+%26+archaeology/book/978-0-306-47696-9, we continue to address issues regarding primates within a fractured landscape. There are seven sections based on specific categories of primates in fragments. In the Introductory section, authors discuss the issues surrounding primates in remnant habitats as well as encourage discussion about what we mean by fragmentation on a landscape scale. In the Long-Term and Regional Studies section, authors present information on changes that have occurred during longer studies as well as changes that have occurred over regions. In the Landscape, Metapopulations and the Matrix section, authors cover topics from dry to moist forests, and from metapopulations to single species use of multiple fragments locations. In Feeding and Behavioral Ecology, authors take a closer look at the flexibility and responsiveness of primates in fragments in terms of their food choices, resource use, and behavioral changes. In Endemic, Endangered, and Nocturnal Primates authors uncover details involving critical primates living in major city centers to the heights of the Himalayas. In Genetics, Disease and Parasites authors cover topics including population viability, disease and parasite transmission between primates in fragments and humans. Finally, in the Conservation and Ecology: Threats and Management section, we synthesize information in this volume and make recommendations for the future of work in this field and the survivability of primates in fragments.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this volume is to present a comprehensive overview of recent advances in primate field research, ecology, and conservation biology in Mesoamerica. The overall goal of each contribution is to integrate newly collected field data with theoretical perspectives drawn from evolutionary biology, socioecology, biological anthropology, and conservation to identify how our current knowledge of primate behavior and ecology has moved beyond more traditional approaches. A corollary to this, and an important goal of the volume is to identify geographical regions and species for which we continue to lack sufficient information, to develop action plans for future research, and to identify areas for immediate conservation action. Despite many decades of primate research in Mesoamerica, much is still unknown concerning the basic ecology and behavior of these species, demography, current distribution, and conservation status of local populations, and the effectiveness of conservation policies on primate survivorship. Four major areas of research are the focus of the volume: Evolutionary Biology and Biogeography; Population Demography and Ecology; Behavior; and Conservation and Management Policies.

Book excerpt: Howler monkeys (genus Alouatta) comprise twelve species of leaf-eating New World monkeys that range from southern Mexico through northern Argentina. This genus is the most widespread of any New World primate taxa, and can be found to inhabit a range of forest types from undisturbed rainforest to severely anthropogenically impacted forest fragments. Although there have been many studies on individual species of howler monkeys, this book is the first comprehensive volume to place information on howler behavior and biology within a theoretical framework of ecological and social adaptability. This is the second of two volumes devoted to the genus Alouatta. This volume: · Examines behavioral and physiological mechanisms that enable howler monkeys to exploit highly disturbed and fragmented habitats · Presents models of howler monkey diet, social organization, and mating systems that can also inform researchers studying Old World colobines, apes, and other tropical mammals These goals are achieved in a collection of chapters written by a distinguished group of scientists on the feeding ecology, behavior, mating strategies, and management and conservation of howlers. This book also contains chapters on the howler microbiome, the concept of behavioral variability, sexual selection, and the role of primates in forest regeneration.
