Book excerpt: Excerpt from Speeches and Writings of Sir William Wedderburn It is with feelings of inexpressible sorrow that I attempt to pen this little note. About the middle of November 1916, I wrote to Sir William Wedderburn requesting him to accord permission to me to bring out a volume of his Speeches and Writings. He was good enough to comply with my request and also to help me in the selection of the matter. But for the exigencies of business this volume should have been out by the end of last year, as originally announced, and it is to me nothing short of a misfortune that I have been denied the privilege of presenting him with a copy of this book. In my letter to Sir William regarding the selection of matter for his speeches and writings, I suggested among other things, the need for giving prominence to his many contributions on the condition of the Indian raiyat, as I knew from personal conversations and correspondence, which it was my inestimable privilege to have with him, how deeply interested he was in the improvement of the economic condition of the Indian raiyats. It is sad to recall the following extract from his letter dated the 7th January, 1917: - I am very glad that you will give prominence to the Famine Union and the proposed Enquiry into the economic condition of the villages, as the woes of the Indian raiyat have been from the very beginning the stimulus which has kept me tied to the labouring oar of Indian Reform. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: To Raise a Fallen People brings to light pioneering writing on international politics from nineteenth-century India. Drawing on extensive archival research, it unearths essays, speeches, and pamphlets that address fundamental questions about India’s place in the world. In these texts, prominent public figures urge their compatriots to learn English and travel abroad to study, debate whether to boycott foreign goods, differ over British imperialism in Afghanistan and China, demand that foreign policy toward the Middle East and South Africa account for religious and ethnic bonds, and query whether to adopt Western values or champion their own civilizational ethos. Rahul Sagar’s detailed introduction contextualizes these documents and shows how they fostered competing visions of the role that India ought to play on the world stage. This landmark book is essential reading for anyone interested in understanding the sources of Indian conduct in international politics.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the world's leading historians examines the great Indian liberal tradition, stretching from Rammohan Roy in the 1820s, through Dadabhai Naoroji in the 1880s to G. K. Gokhale in the 1900s. This powerful new study shows how the ideas of constitutional, and later 'communitarian' liberals influenced, but were also rejected by their opponents and successors, including Nehru, Gandhi, Indian socialists, radical democrats and proponents of Hindu nationalism. Equally, Recovering Liberties contributes to the rapidly developing field of global intellectual history, demonstrating that the ideas we associate with major Western thinkers – Mills, Comte, Spencer and Marx – were received and transformed by Indian intellectuals in the light of their own traditions to demand justice, racial equality and political representation. In doing so, Christopher Bayly throws fresh light on the nature and limitations of European political thought and re-examines the origins of Indian democracy.

Book excerpt: Roger Jeffery in this book has brought together 10 original, well-researched and well-written essays which bring to life the presence of India in the capital city of Scotland, Edinburgh. On the surface Edinburgh is a purely Scottish city: its ‘India’ past is not easily visible. Yet, from the late 17th century onwards, many of Edinburgh’s young men and women were drawn to India. The city received back money and knowledge, sculpture and paintings, botanical specimens and even skulls! Colonel James Skinner, well-known for establishing Skinner’s Horse, brought his sons to Edinburgh for their schooling. Though Sir Walter Scott visited India only in his imagination (and tried to stop his own sons going there) he crafted a dashing India tale involving Tipu Sultan. The money from India helped create Edinburgh’s New Town, Edinburgh’s internationally-renowned schools (whose former pupils careers ranged from tea-planters to Viceroys) and people who came to Edinburgh from India established Edinburgh’s second women’s medical college. There are many such hidden stories of Edinburgh’s India connections. In this path-breaking book they are brought to life, using novel approaches to look at Edinburgh’s past, to see it as an imperial city, a city for which India held a special place. Focusing on the interactions between individual lives, social networks and financial, material, cultural and social flows, leading experts from Edinburgh’s history provide fascinating detail on how Edinburgh’s links to India were formed and transformed.
