Potter, of South Kingstown, Upon the Resolution in Support of the Union: With an Additional Note But the late battle has changed all that. The effect of the battle at the South would be to unite and encourage them, and so far was bad for us but the effect at the North would be good. It would put a stop to all the bragging and blustering and parade soldiering which had been going on so long, and it would lead people to look upon it as a serious matter, as it was. I thought a great many times that if an intelligent foreigner had been amongst us, who had seen military service and battles abroad, he would have been perfectly disgusted with the manner in which our people and newspapers spoke of the war, how we boasted of our grand army, and how we magnified every skir-u mish into a great victory, where the Southerners always ran, almost before they were attacked. And this defeat had rendered a union of parties more 1163065 sary and easier to be brought about. As the war advanced and We felt its pressure, we should be more disposed to give up all our own little bickerings and contentions, and to sacrifice per sonal feeling to the good of the country. And it has rendered us more willing to listen to the truth about our enemies. 7c had been trying to conceal the truth from ourselves, and this miserable policy of self-deception had cost us the loss of the battle of Manassas, the loss of many val liable lives, and had probably added years to the contest. We should learn hereafter not to underrate our enemies. This would be one good effect of the defeat, that the people would now be willing to hear the truth and with this view I propose to give some statistics of the productions of the South, a subject on which our people appeared to be entirely ignorant. The general idea was that all the South raised was cotton, rice, and a very little grain and that nearly all the corn and wheatwas raised in the great West. The census tells a different story. We should be surprised to find that these Southern States raised one half of all the corn raised in the whole Union, and a good proportion of other grains. Book Synopsis From Property to Person by : Silvana R. Siddali
Download or read book From Property to Person written by Silvana R. Siddali and published by LSU Press. This book was released on 2005-03-01 with total page 322 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Most historians accept the proposition that in the first two years of the Civil War the North's primary aim was to reestablish the Union and the Constitution, not to emancipate slaves. But when northerners began clamoring for the confiscation of southern land and slaves as a punitive, military, and revenue-raising tactic, the constitutional right to personal property, particularly human property, came into question. In From Property to Person, Silvana R. Siddali traces the resulting discourse among northern voters, politicians, military leaders, and President Lincoln, elucidating how emancipation ultimately became an essential political cause in the North. After the outbreak of civil war, many northern citizens demanded that slaves be seized as contraband without necessarily endorsing their emancipation. Siddali examines the public and political debates in the North over southerners' private property rights and explains how these deliberations set in motion the first major reconsideration of the Constitution since the Bill of Rights. Fundamental questions arose: Who had the right to control the war effort? What were the rights of rebellious citizens in a democratic Republic? How did one define human bondage that is implicitly protected in the nation's founding documents? Would the destruction of slavery irreparably damage the Constitution? Through the two Confiscation Acts of 1861 and 1862, the author argues, Americans worked out a conundrum between property rights and constitutionally protected civil liberties. The right of all human beings to freedom now trumped white southerners' right to human property. In a rich analysis of editorials, pamphlets, letters, and congressional speeches, From Property to Person reveals the swift transformation in rhetoric concerning the Constitution and its protection of private property rights. The Confiscation Acts paved the way for the Reconstruction Amendments by fostering support for a broader reach by the federal government into private property rights and envisioning a new interpretation of an individual citizen's rights and obligations.
Book Synopsis Inventing New England's Slave Paradise by : Robert K. Fitts
Download or read book Inventing New England's Slave Paradise written by Robert K. Fitts and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 1998 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many 19th and 20th century historians have argued that Northern slavery was mild and that master/slave relations were relatively harmonious. Yet, Northern slavery, like Southern, was characterized by the conflict between the masters' desire to control their slaves and the slaves' resistance to this domination. For a variety of political, social, and intellectual reasons, 19th and 20th century historians ignored this inherent conflict in discussions of Northern slavery. Fitts' research focuses on how and why historians sanitized the history of slavery in Narragansett, Rhode Island, and then shows the inadequacy of these interpretations by examining several of the planters' and slaves' conflicting strategies of control and resistance. Topics include how planters used physical punishment, legislation, and the threat of sale in an attempt to control their slaves, and how slaves resisted through violence, running away, and non-violent crime. Fitts also examines the plantation landscape as a site of symbolic contestation and includes a chapter on slave names. (Ph.D. dissertation, Brown University, 1995; revised with new preface)
