John Conness, Delivered at Platt's Hall, San Francisco on Tuesday Evening, October 18, 1864 It is not now a question whether a better man might or might not have been nominated from the leaders of the Union party, or a bet ter or worse General might have been taken up by the opposition. The question is nar rowed down to a choice between two perr sons-mr.' Lincoln and General mcclellan. I have not read with any greate care the Balti mor'e' platform of 'the Union party, on Which Mr. Lincoln stands, or the Chicago platform of the opposition, on which General 'mcclellan does not stand! And I think' the mass of the country will not recollect much of' either of thein. But we laymen m politics know enough of these platforms; enough of the two parties; enough 'of the two candidates and their sup porters to be able to see the postion they do, in fact, actually oc'cupy. They both seek peace! Mr. Lincoln leaves us in no doubt as to the terms on which he seeks it. He wishes it after the rebellion is put down, after its armies are defeated and dispersed, and the flag of the Union is 'hoisted, respected and recognized over the length and breadth of the land.
