Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A glance through the Table of Contents will demonstrate the many categories comprising the fields of Speech Communication and Theatre. The thesis and dissertation titles which have been categorized appeared between the years 1973 and 1978. For those titles which could readily have been placed into more than one category, we did our best to pick the category which seemed to represent the main thrust of the work. We have also provided cross references for all such titles. As addi tional aids to the student, we have provided subject and school indexes. Although we have tried to produce an error-free copy, we feel that a few titles may contain minor mistakes because of the copy sent to us by some of the schools and libraries. Also, as in any bibliography, there may be certain omissions in ours, but hope fully these have been kept to a minimum. Finally, in putting together this work, we hope we have pro vided the serious students of Speech Communication and Theatre Arts with a valuable guide to their own research. ACKNOWLEDGMENTS We are above all indebted to Dr. Arthur N. Kruger who not only conceived the idea for this book, but who also played a major role in supervising the work and bringing it to fruition. We also appreciate the introduction he has written for us.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Any student of acting must begin by reawakening his or her ability to play like a child. The Natural Actor focuses on stimulating this ability using simple, natural, easily understood techniques. First, students train their instruments: body, voice, mind, and spirit. The trained instrument is then used to practice the craft of acting through games, improvisation, and open scenes. Journal prompts encourage critical thinking about the learning process. Physical training is integrated into activities that develop the imagination and strengthen the ability to work with others. Aristotle observed that acting is an innate part of human nature. The Natural Actor gives students the emotional guidance and practical tools needed to rediscover that innate ability. The book is ideal for college-level performing arts classes. Written from a position of emotional sensitivity and abundance, The Natural Actor will help any student who wishes to release the actor within and explore the creative self." Mary Kate Caffrey received her MA in theatre from Northwestern University. She has taught undergraduate acting at a number of universities, community colleges, and conservatories on the East Coast. She is currently Professor of Communicative Arts at Massasoit Community College and Lecturer in Performing Arts at The University of Massachusetts, Boston. She has directed productions at numerous theatres in the New England area. Before becoming a founding member and Co-Artistic Director of Threshold Theatre, she was Artistic Director at the Triangle Theater and Education Director at the New Theater, both in Boston, MA.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From oral culture, through the advent of literacy, to the introduction of printing, to the development of electronic media, communication structures have radically altered culture in profound ways. As the first book to take a critical realist approach to culture, Theatre, Communication, Critical Realism examines theatre and its history through the interaction of society s structures, agents, and discourses. Tobin Nellhaus shows that communication structure - a culture s use and development of speech, handwriting, printing, and electronics - explains much about why, when, and how theatre has transformed.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book shows readers how the arts of improvisational theater and acting can help scientists and other experts speak about technical research to lay audiences.Focused on public speaking, this book translates the principles and processes used by actors and other theater professionals into a method for communicating science to the general public. The book is structured as a step-by-step examination of how to write an effective speech and then a guide to carefully analyzing that speech as an actor does in rehearsal before finally sharing it with an audience as a performance. In other words, the book helps science communicators identify what to say and how to say it. This book also includes prompts and exercises that the author has used in classes and workshops with scientists.
