Book excerpt: This book is about a new and different way of approaching and studying the history of the built environment and the use of historical precedents in design. However, although what I am proposing is new for what is currently called architectural history, both my approach and even my conclusions are not that new in other fields, as I discovered when I attempted to find supporting evidence. * In fact, of all the disciplines dealing with various aspects of the study of the past, architectural history seems to have changed least in the ways I am advocating. There is currently a revival of interest in the history of architecture and urban form; a similar interest applies to theory, vernacular design, and culture-environment relations. After years of neglect, the study of history and the use of historical precedent are again becoming important. However, that interest has not led to new approaches to the subject, nor have its bases been examined. This I try to do. In so doing, I discuss a more rigorous and, I would argue, a more valid way of looking at historical data and hence of using such data in a theory of the built environment and as precedent in environmental design. Underlying this is my view of Environment-Behavior Studies CEBS) as an emerging theory rather than as data to help design based on current "theory. " Although this will be the subject of another book, a summary statement of this position may be useful.

Book excerpt: Since the dawn of Second Earth, the Island of Fire has awaited the arrival of the one mage whose dominion over the global magic network—the spectrum—will enable her to rescue the primitive, totalitarian nation from obscurity. But, when Scarlet July is born, her extraordinary magic unexpectedly renders her a third-class citizen, denied the right to education, employment and, ultimately, life. Evading execution, Scarlet finds herself orphaned and alone, struggling to survive and find her purpose. Three-thousand miles north, in the ice island of Ichthyosis, Diving Fleet Commander Cease Lechatelierite has never had to question his purpose. Since childhood, he’s been set on track toward one goal: to annihilate magekind. This six-part series follows an eclectic cast of teens fighting to find their place in the wars plaguing their dystopian world. From fantastical world-building, to combat sequences, to geopolitics, to the exploration of a soldier's psyche, to social commentary, to the turmoil of young adulthood, to forbidden romance, Spectrum is a fast-paced, character-driven, sci-fi/fantasy adventure for the Hunger Games generation.

Book excerpt: All too often people who are successful in their jobs are promoted to management without an appropriate level of support. They are often unaware of the implications of managing a team and their need to develop new skills to lead and inspire people to do their best work. Instead, many merely focus on "getting the job done". The significant missing element is that which involves "people". Managers typically understand the task-related aspect of the work and underestimate the importance of the human element. This is the area that really counts in leadership. It is not only new managers who must pay attention to this vital element. This book seeks to address the widespread needs of managers in the quest for success in their leadership. You will learn:An insightful look into building confidence and developing your own leadership styleLearn how to effectively communicate and overcome common communication barriersDevelop key skills for building relationships, providing constructive feedback and coaching othersCustomer review:"Good managers are usually also good leaders, O'Neil tells us, but no matter how good they might be there would be few who couldn't learn something from this little pearl of a book. In fact, there would be few people who couldn't. O'Neil has captured the essence of what true leadership is all about and she's managed to explain it very clearly in non-preachy prose in less than a hundred pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How globalized information networks can be used for strategic advantage Until recently, globalization was viewed, on balance, as an inherently good thing that would benefit people and societies nearly everywhere. Now there is growing concern that some countries will use their position in globalized networks to gain undue influence over other societies through their dominance of information and financial networks, a concept known as "weaponized interdependence." In exploring the conditions under which China, Russia, and the United States might be expected to weaponize control of information and manipulate the global economy, the contributors to this volume challenge scholars and practitioners to think differently about foreign economic policy, national security, and statecraft for the twenty-first century. The book addresses such questions as: What areas of the global economy are most vulnerable to unilateral control of information and financial networks? How sustainable is the use of weaponized interdependence? What are the possible responses from targeted actors? And how sustainable is the open global economy if weaponized interdependence becomes a default tool for managing international relations?
