Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Field Ionization Mass Spectrometry focuses on developments in field ionization (FI) mass spectrometry and describes its applications in physical chemistry, with emphasis on mass spectrometric problems. Physico-chemical problems as well as problems of chemical analysis are considered based on issues such as the probability of field ionization; field dissociation and charge distribution; kinetics of ion decomposition in high fields; negative ions; surface diffusion; activation of FI emitters; and elucidation of the structures of organic compounds. This book is comprised of four chapters and begins with a short review on some of the most important directions of research in FI mass spectrometry. Two main fields of research are discussed: physico-chemical investigations and quantitative analysis or structural determination of organic substances. The next chapter is devoted to focusing and non-focusing sources of FI and covers topics such as methods for production of FI tips and thin wires, together with the use of tips and carbon filaments as FI emitters. The last two chapters focus on the application of the FI mass spectrometer to physico-chemical problems and to quantitative analysis of homologous series of organic substances such as alkanes, alkenes, alkynes, amines, and alcohols. This monograph is intended primarily for chemists and mass spectrometrists.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Volume 6: Ionization Methods captures the story of molecular ionization and its phenomenal evolution that makes mass spectrometry the powerful method it is today. Chapters 1 and 2 cover fundamentals and various issues that are common to all ionization (e.g., accurate mass, isotope clusters, and derivatization). Chapters 3-9 acknowledge that some ionization methods are appropriate for gas-phase molecules and others for molecules that are in the solid or liquid states. Chapters 3-6 cover gas-phase molecules, dividing the subject into: (1) ionization of gas-phase molecules by particles (e.g., EI), (2) ionization by photons, (3) ionization by ion-molecule and molecule-molecule reactions (e.g., APCI and DART), and ionization in Strong electric fields (i.e., Electrohydrodynamic and Field Ionization/Desorption). "Ionization in a Strong Electric Field" illustrates the transition to ionization of molecules in the solid or liquid states, covered in Chapters 7-9: (1) spray methods for ionization (e.g., electrospray), (2) desorption ionization by particle bombardment (e.g., FAB), and (3) desorption by photons (e.g., MALDI). Electrospray and MALDI also lead to applications in biophysical chemistry, the theme of Chapter 10. Chapter 11 reconsiders ionization from the view of choosing an ionization method. The range of subjects is from ionization of organic and biomolecules to the study of microorganisms.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first part of the thesis concerns a study of vacuum ultraviolet (VUV) photoabsorption spectroscopy of metal atoms and ions using laser plasma generated continuum radiation at DCU. Photoabsorption spectra have been measured using the Dual Laser Plasma (DLP) photoaborption technique. Using this technique, the absorption spectra of lowly charged ions of lead and bismuth have been obtained. Then calculations with a relativistic time dependent local density approximation (RTDLDA) code are used to reproduce the overall spectral shapes of the spectra. Also, the calculations with the Cowan suite of atomic structure codes are used to identify unknown lines in the spectra. The simulated spectra broadened with our instrumental function are used to compared with experimental spectra and new features which are due to photoabsorption from both ground state and excited states of the Pb+, Bi+ and Bi2+ ions are identified. The second part of the project was focused on optogalvanic spectroscopy (OGS) of molybdenum atoms. Three-step, two colour ionization of Mo was performed using a molybdenum hollow cathode lamp as the atomic Mo sample. Both the slow and fast optogalvanic signals were measured. There are few OGS studies of Mo in the literature the current study represents, to the best of the author's knowledge, the first multicolour OGS study on Mo. The experiments were carried out at the Legnaro National Laboratories (LNL-INFN), Padova, Italy in the SPES (Selective Production of Exotic Species) laboratory. The focus is on isotope selection using tuned (resonant) laser ionization techniques of atomic vapours or the so-called AVLIS (atomic vapour laser ionization separation) technique. The experiments were designed to prove OGS as a simple and economic sensor for laser tuning. Specifically, the wavelength dependence of both 'fast' and 'slow' optogalvanic signals was studied, where the former comes from photo-generated electrons emitted during the laser pulse(s) and the latter originates from ion population redistribution following the laser pulse(s). Both the slow and fast optogalvanic signals are suitable for instantaneous laser tuning (and both are selective), however the former yields higher signal to noise ratios (SNRs).
