Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Spectroscopy, structure, and energy transfer of transient radicals in combustion Period: 4/15/04-12/31/06 PI: Hai-Lung Dai, Department of Chemistry, University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia, PA 19104 [email protected] A newly developed approach based on nanosecond time resolved Fourier Transform IR Emission Spectroscopy (TR-FTIRES) has been applied to the investigation of the spectroscopy and structure of unknown transient radicals that are important in combustion processes. Several radicals including deuterated-vinyl, cyanooxomethyl (OCCN) and ketenyl (HCCO) whose vibrational structure has not been determined have been examined. The transient radical species is produced with high vibrational excitation through UV photolysis of a precursor molecule. The IR emission from the highly excited species through its IR active vibrational modes is detected with fast time resolution using the TR-FTIR technique. A new two-dimensional cross-spectra correlation technique has been developed for analyzing the time-resolved FTIR emission spectra. This analysis reveals the common set of emission bands from the same target radical in the emission spectra obtained using different precursors. The spectroscopic approach also allows the reactions of the excited radical and the photolysis reaction of the precursor molecules to be characterized. All these information are fundamentally important to the understanding of chemical dynamics of radicals as well as the combustion processes.

Book Synopsis Visualizing Chemistry by : National Research Council
Download or read book Visualizing Chemistry written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2006-06-01 with total page 222 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Scientists and engineers have long relied on the power of imaging techniques to help see objects invisible to the naked eye, and thus, to advance scientific knowledge. These experts are constantly pushing the limits of technology in pursuit of chemical imagingâ€"the ability to visualize molecular structures and chemical composition in time and space as actual events unfoldâ€"from the smallest dimension of a biological system to the widest expanse of a distant galaxy. Chemical imaging has a variety of applications for almost every facet of our daily lives, ranging from medical diagnosis and treatment to the study and design of material properties in new products. In addition to highlighting advances in chemical imaging that could have the greatest impact on critical problems in science and technology, Visualizing Chemistry reviews the current state of chemical imaging technology, identifies promising future developments and their applications, and suggests a research and educational agenda to enable breakthrough improvements.
Book Synopsis Electronic and Photoelectron Spectroscopy by : Andrew M. Ellis
Download or read book Electronic and Photoelectron Spectroscopy written by Andrew M. Ellis and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2005-01-13 with total page 302 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Electronic and photoelectron spectroscopy can provide extraordinarily detailed information on the properties of molecules and are in widespread use in the physical and chemical sciences. Applications extend beyond spectroscopy into important areas such as chemical dynamics, kinetics and atmospheric chemistry. This book aims to provide the reader with a firm grounding of the basic principles and experimental techniques employed. The extensive use of case studies effectively illustrates how spectra are assigned and how information can be extracted, communicating the matter in a compelling and instructive manner. Topics covered include laser-induced fluorescence, resonance-enhanced multiphoton ionization, cavity ringdown and ZEKE spectroscopy. The volume is for advanced undergraduate and graduate students taking courses in spectroscopy and will also be useful to anyone encountering electronic and/or photoelectron spectroscopy during their research.

Download or read book Femtochemistry and Femtobiology written by Abderrazzak Douhal and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2002 with total page 854 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book contains important contributions from top international scientists on the-state-of-the-art of femtochemistry and femtobiology at the beginning of the new millennium. It consists of reviews and papers on ultrafast dynamics in molecular science. The coverage of topics highlights several important features of molecular science from the viewpoint of structure (space domain) and dynamics (time domain). First of all, the book presents the latest developments, such as experimental techniques for understanding ultrafast processes in gas, condensed and complex systems, including biological molecules, surfaces and nanostructures. At the same time it stresses the different ways to control the rates and pathways of reactive events in chemistry and biology. Particular emphasis is given to biological processes as an area where femtodynamics is becoming very useful for resolving the structural dynamics from techniques such as electron diffraction, and X-ray and IR spectroscopy. Finally, the latest developments in quantum control (in both theory and experiment) and the experimental pulse-shaping techniques are described.
