Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Radiation Measurement in Photobiology deals with the measurement of optical radiation and its application in photobiology. Optical radiation detectors as well as the calibration of light sources and detectors are discussed, together with techniques for spectroradiometry and broadband radiometry. Action spectroscopy and ultraviolet radiation dosimetry are also considered. Comprised of nine chapters, this volume begins with an introduction to the basic principles of light measurement, followed by a survey of optical radiation detectors based on physical principles and the problems associated with calibration. The next three chapters deal with important applications and extensions of these radiant measurements, including a short review of biological and medical users of lasers. The final three chapters on specialized studies and developments illustrate the wide diversity that exists in photobiology. These cover ultraviolet radiation dosimetry using polymer films, computer modeling of terrestrial ultraviolet radiation, and the "diffusion optics" in biological media. This book should be of interest to photobiologists.

Book excerpt: Skin cancer, other related skin effects and vision impairment which can occur as a result of exposure to optical radiation have been a source of major concern to the world. This work seeks to characterise the optical radiation sources by considering the geometry of the optical radiation source and the detector. The level of risk associated with the optical radiation sources at various distances was found to be increasing with increasing distances for extended sources and decreasing with decreasing distances for point sources. The optical sources investigated appear to be safe in normal operation except for Bilurubin lamp and Dental curing lights. The control measures to reduce the risk associated with these sources were presented. Performance evaluation of USB (hand-held) spectroradiometer was carried out so that it can be used for onsite measurements. This book will be a guide to health workers (who are occupationally exposed to this hazard) as well as professionals in the field of instrumentation. It is equally a source of information to health and safety executives (HSE) or anyone else who may be considering safety issues in relation optical radiation or its instrumentation.

Book excerpt: Radiometry is an essential part of the optical design of virtually every optical instrument, and key to many applications. It is also used to measure the radiation of various objects. This tutorial examines both the techniques of calculating radiative transfer and the measurement of fluxes and radiometric properties of various sorts.

Book excerpt: This book discusses modern, user-friendly radiometric practices that make it possible to convert from traditional source-based optical radiation measurements to the more efficient and higher accuracy detector-based applications and calibrations. It considers improved performance optical detector and radiometer standards including photometers and tristimulus colorimeters, and describes research-based design considerations, measurement of radiometric, optical, and electronic characteristics, and comparison of absolute-, transfer-, and working-standard detectors and radiometers from the ultraviolet (UV) to the infrared (IR) range. The book will serve to guide the optical radiation measurement community, researchers, manufacturers, calibration laboratories, students, and practicing engineers to switch from the old and limited-use measurement methods to the higher performance detector-based applications. The radiometer standards discussed here can be used to produce wide range radiometric, photometric, colour, and radiation temperature measurements with low uncertainty.

This book was released on 2013-11-11 with total page 1042 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nearly a decade aga a general review article on the evaluation of optical radia tion hazards was published in Applied Optics (Sliney and Freasier, 1973). This arti cle received many favorable comments but also prompted many inquiries regarding specific optical hazard problems. From this it became evident that a monograph rather than a supplemental and expanded article was needed to fill this literature gap relating to laser and optical radiation hazards. The present work is designed to fill that gap, and is structured to permit either classroom or self-study use. Much of the material in this book was developed in eonnection with short courses on laser safety and radiometry in which we have participated, as weIl as from our previous articles. In particular, the sequenee of chapters is based upon the experiences which we have had in lecturing in courses with different schedules. One of the great difficulties in developing a text of this nature is that a broad, multidisciplinary background must be included in order that the reader can comprehend all of the subjeet matter readily. For this reason, the material presented on anatomy and physiology is orien ted toward the engineer or physical scientist, while the review material on basic optical physics is intended more for the physician or life scientist.
