Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Lost Tales of Power is a collection of novels that describe an immense persistent multiverse. The books are a mixture of standalone and miniseries all set in the same universe with overlapping and intertwining story lines. Included in this collection is the full text of Resurgence of Ancient Darkness, The Sac'a'rith, and Spectra's Gambit. In addition to the three complete novels, included is a brief introduction to each book. Resurgence of Ancient Darkness: When Shadow’s team healed reality by closing the last tear they paved the way for a new evil, one that has been patiently waiting for its chance to rise again. Shadow must build a navy out of his fledgling Battle Wizards and carry the fight to the enemy before it comes for them. Meanwhile, the old man and his steel-eyed partner are making their own plans, and the peace that once reigned throughout the galaxy has come tumbling down. The Sac'a'rith: Clear across the galaxy from where Grandmaster Vydor is building his kingdom of wizards, a new darkness is rising up. Soldiers who die in battle are standing back up and switching sides. Entire space stations are being wiped clean of life and the military is powerless. One man, perhaps more dangerous than the darkness itself, is all that stands between darkness and light. Spectra's Gambit: An old ally of Grandmaster Vydor comes to him for help because an enemy, perhaps as old as the Empire itself, has turned its sights on the Cathratinairian race and means to wipe them out. Spectra and Dusty are sent to find and stop this new threat, while Spectra begins her plan to change the balance of power for the entire known multiverse. Book excerpt: This is a follow-on project to SSC-240, 'Load Criteria for Ship Stuctural Design', which proposed methods for the estimation and superposition of the primary loads and performed sample calculations for one conventional dry cargo ship. It involved the following bending moments: still-water due to weight and buoyancy; ships own wave train; quasi-static wave-induced, vertical and lateral combined; dynamic loads, including slamming, whipping and springings; and thermal effects. Here the service and full-scale stress data of three larger and/or faster ships (Containership SL-7, Bulk Carrier FOTINI-L and very large Crude Carrier UNIVERSE IRELAND) are examined for the purpose of the enventual development of hull-girder criteria. The examination is limited to extreme midship bending moment loads which are related to the ultimate strength. An assessment is made of the compatibility between the service and stress data of the distinctly different study ships and the analysis methods of SSC-240 and their assumptions for cargo ship type. Considerable insight is obtained into the probable correct mathematical approximations of the loads and their interrelationships. It appears that still-water bending moments can be approached probabilistically, however, considerable additional information on experienced loading conditions must be gathered to determine the statistical distributions. Additional effort is required to determine the suitable probabilistic expression and a synthesis method for the contribution of vibration to the extreme load. (Author).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is no ordinary opening book. This practical guide describes only such openings in which White or Black sacrifices material at an early stage of the game. They are called gambits (in Old Italian, gambetto means tripping). The justification for such sacrifices can differ quite a lot. In most cases, the side that sacrifices material tends to get ahead of the opponent in development and/or opens lines to attack the enemy king. However, there are also gambits aimed at the occupation of the center (Blumenfeld Gambit), depriving the opponent of castling (Cochrane Gambit or Traxler Variation), weakening the opponent’s pawn structure (Anti-Moscow Variation), luring an opponent’s piece to an unfavorable position (sacrificing the b2-pawn), obtaining a certain positional compensation (Volga Gambit), etc. Gambits are often associated with the romantic chess of the 19th century. Indeed, that was the heyday of such sharp openings as the King’s Gambit or Evans Gambit, but even nowadays, many games begin with one of the well-known or even innovative gambits. This should come as no surprise: gambits help to reveal the true essence of chess, “the triumph of spirit over matter.” The concept of this book is to examine practical games and give theoretical insights in the notes rather than in stand-alone articles. Practice has shown this to be the most effective way of mastering new material. More often than not, recent games by the world’s top players have been chosen as an illustration, played in the last few years in particular. However, the most important classic games are mentioned as well. The present book analyzes almost 50 of the major gambit lines and systems. Almost 140 games are given in full, with many game fragments selected to illustrate the important deviations. And there is a special section about types of sacrificial themes, such as sacrificing the b2-pawn, sacrificing on f7, etc. Readers who may wish to employ one of the examined gambit variations on a regular basis should, no doubt, study the specific books on that very opening, although in most cases the lines and ideas given are sufficient for a beginner or club player to include the system in his or her opening repertoire and give it a try.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Two great books from the Everyman Chess Library, Gambit Busters by Sam Collins and Gambit Play by Angus Dunnington, brought together in one volume. We have all experienced nasty gambits and ultra aggressive opening play. It's scary and it's always been difficult to find good, practical advice on how to react. Now, hover, help is at hand. In Gambit Busters, Sam Collins tackles the important subject of gambit play and gambit defence. He explores in depth the basic approaches, the typical mistakes made at all levels and explains how to avoid them. He also examines the techniques used by world-class players to defend and counterattack, and explains how you can learn from them. In addition, he covers some key theory of many popular gambits in modern chess. In Gambit Play, Angus Dunnington takes an in-depth look at gambits in the modern game. By using illustrative examples, he explores the key aspects of successful gambit play, whilst also underlining the reasons why some gambits work whilst others flounder.

Former Poet Laureate William Jay Smith retells the story of America's most successful literary spoof with all its twists and turns.
