Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Modern local spectral theory is built on the classical spectral theorem, a fundamental result in single-operator theory and Hilbert spaces. This book provides an in-depth introduction to the natural expansion of this fascinating topic of Banach space operator theory. It gives complete coverage of the field, including the fundamental recent work by Albrecht and Eschmeier which provides the full duality theory for Banach space operators. One of its highlights are the many characterizations of decomposable operators, and of other related, important classes of operators, including identifications of distinguished parts, and results on permanence properties of spectra with respect to several types of similarity. Written in a careful and detailed style, it contains numerous examples, many simplified proofs of classical results, extensive references, and open problems, suitable for continued research.

Book excerpt: "Spectral Audio Signal Processing is the fourth book in the music signal processing series by Julius O. Smith. One can say that human hearing occurs in terms of spectral models. As a result, spectral models are especially useful in audio applications. For example, with the right spectral model, one can discard most of the information contained in a sound waveform without changing how it sounds. This is the basis of modern audio compression techniques."--Publisher's description.

In roughterms, there arethree types ofthem:algebrasofboundedlinear operators on Banach spaces with composition and the operator norm, al- bras consisting of bounded continuous functions on topological spaces with pointwise product and the uniform norm, and algebrasof integrable functions on locally compact groups with convolution as multiplication. These all play a key role in modern analysis. Much of operator theory is best approached from a Banach algebra point of view and many questions in complex analysis (such as approximation by polynomials or rational functions in speci?c - mains) are best understood within the framework of Banach algebras. Also, the study of a locally compact Abelian group is closely related to the study 1 of the group algebra L (G). There exist a rich literature and excellent texts on each single class of Banach algebras, notably on uniform algebras and on operator algebras. This work is intended as a textbook which provides a thorough introduction to the theory of commutative Banach algebras and stresses the applications to commutative harmonic analysis while also touching on uniform algebras. In this sense and purpose the book resembles Larsen’s classical text [75] which shares many themes and has been a valuable resource. However, for advanced graduate students and researchers I have covered several topics which have not been published in books before, including some journal articles.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This ENCYCLOPAEDIA OF MATHEMATICS aims to be a reference work for all parts of mathe matics. It is a translation with updates and editorial comments of the Soviet Mathematical Encyclopaedia published by 'Soviet Encyclopaedia Publishing House' in five volumes in 1977-1985. The annotated translation consists of ten volumes including a special index volume. There are three kinds of articles in this ENCYCLOPAEDIA. First of all there are survey-type articles dealing with the various main directions in mathematics (where a rather fine subdivi sion has been used). The main requirement for these articles has been that they should give a reasonably complete up-to-date account of the current state of affairs in these areas and that they should be maximally accessible. On the whole, these articles should be understandable to mathematics students in their first specialization years, to graduates from other mathematical areas and, depending on the specific subject, to specialists in other domains of science, en gineers and teachers of mathematics. These articles treat their material at a fairly general level and aim to give an idea of the kind of problems, techniques and concepts involved in the area in question. They also contain background and motivation rather than precise statements of precise theorems with detailed definitions and technical details on how to carry out proofs and constructions. The second kind of article, of medium length, contains more detailed concrete problems, results and techniques.

Book excerpt: This book is devoted to the possible applications of spectral analysis and spectral synthesis for convolution type functional equations on topological abelian groups. The solution space of convolution type equations has been synthesized in the sense that the general solutions are built up from exponential monomial solutions. In particular, equivalence of systems of functional equations can be tested. This leads to a unified treatment of classical equations and to interesting new results.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The theory of hypergroups is a rapidly developing area of mathematics due to its diverse applications in different areas like probability, harmonic analysis, etc. This book exhibits the use of functional equations and spectral synthesis in the theory of hypergroups. It also presents the fruitful consequences of this delicate “marriage” where the methods of spectral analysis and synthesis can provide an efficient tool in characterization problems of function classes on hypergroups. This book is written for the interested reader who has open eyes for both functional equations and hypergroups, and who dares to enter a new world of ideas, a new world of methods — and, sometimes, a new world of unexpected difficulties. Contents:IntroductionPolynomial Hypergroups in One VariablePolynomial Hypergroups in Several VariablesSturm-Liouville HypergroupsTwo-Point Support HypergroupsSpectral Analysis and Synthesis on Polynomial HypergroupsSpectral Analysis and Synthesis on Sturm-Liouville HypergroupsMoment Problems on HypergroupsSpecial Functional Equations on HypergroupsDifference Equations on Polynomial HypergroupsStability Problems on Hypergroups Readership: Researchers and post-graduate students working in hypergroups. Keywords:Functional Equation;Hypergroup;Spectral SynthesisKey Features:The treatment applied here is completely new for those who are working in hypergroups: methods of functional equations and spectral synthesis have not been used beforeThis treatment also enriches the theory of functional equations: no classical functional equational methods have been applied before on structures like hypergroupsSeveral problems in both fields can be considered from a unique point of view of convolution type functional equationsReviews: “The author presents a new and very interesting idea of solving functional equations, which can stimulate mathematicians from different areas of mathematics to study and solve similar problems.” Zentralblatt MATH

Book excerpt: appear in Volume 1, a Roman numeral "I" has been prefixed as a reminder to the reader; thus, for example, "I,B.2.1 " refers to Appendix B.2.1 in Volume 1. An understanding of the main topics discussed in this book does not, I hope, hinge upon repeated consultation of the items listed in the bibli ography. Readers with a limited aim should find strictly necessary only an occasional reference to a few of the book listed. The remaining items, and especially the numerous research papers mentioned, are listed as an aid to those readers who wish to pursue the subject beyond the limits reached in this book; such readers must be prepared to make the very considerable effort called for in making an acquaintance with current research literature. A few of the research papers listed cover devel opments that came to my notice too late for mention in the main text. For this reason, any attempted summary in the main text of the current standing of a research problem should be supplemented by an examin ation of the bibliography and by scrutiny of the usual review literature.

Book excerpt: The 2-volume-book is an updated, reorganized and considerably enlarged version of the previous edition of the Research Problem Book in Analysis (LNM 1043), a collection familiar to many analysts, that has sparked off much research. This new edition, created in a joint effort by a large team of analysts, is, like its predecessor, a collection of unsolved problems of modern analysis designed as informally written mini-articles, each containing not only a statement of a problem but also historical and metho- dological comments, motivation, conjectures and discussion of possible connections, of plausible approaches as well as a list of references. There are now 342 of these mini- articles, almost twice as many as in the previous edition, despite the fact that a good deal of them have been solved!
