Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since first coming into existence in the early 90s, the vertical-cavity surface-emitting laser (VCSEL) has made several quantum leaps in performance. The performance of VCSELs now exceeds that of edge-emitting lasers in many respects, and offers a superior optical beam and much easier monolithic integrability. As the VCSEL technology improves further, and their number and variety multiply, their potential applications will likely expand at a rapid pace. Vertical-cavity Surface-Emitting Lasers: Technology and Applications addresses two main objectives. It provides the researcher and device engineer with a reference guide to understanding the physical principles as well as the practical design concepts of VCSELs. Furthermore, it provides the system designer or application engineer with a review of the properties of VCSELs, and an overview of some of the applications in which the VCSEL has already played an important role. This book features contributions from prominent researchers in the field.

Book excerpt: The motivation behind this work is to use derivative spectroscopy to better understand the inner workings of Vertical Cavity Surface Emitting Lasers (VCSELs) provided by Honeywell Inc. Derivative spectroscopy was used to investigate two types of Honeywell VCSELs, Oxide confined VCSELs and Proton bombarded VCSELs. To quantify the devices I-V (current-voltage) and P-I (power-current) electrical and optical measurements were used to show the devices have no major problems and that the measurements are reproducible. The I-V and P-I curves were taken to initially characterize devices. Having these curves supplies basic information such as laser threshold and data points for the slope of the operating regime. Using a voltage modulation technique derivative measurements dI/dV, d2IdV2, dL/dV were obtained and revealed subtle nonlinearities in the I-V and P-V data. Near field images of the optical output was correlated with the electrical measurements, and three mechanisms were identified that could be the cause of the derivative structure of the I-V curves.

This book was released on 1997 with total page 150 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Semiconductor vertical cavity surface emitting lasers (VCSELs) have attracted much interest as light sources for applications such as optical communications, optical interconnects and high brightness displays. Their small size and low thresholds enable them to be modulated at high frequency and integrated with conventional electronics. The low divergence circular beams produced by VCSELs are ideal for coupling to optical fibres. Their geometry makes them suitable for fabricating two dimensional laser arrays. The structure of VCSELs makes them very interesting from the point of view of fundamental laser physics, and some physical properties of VCSELs are not yet well understood. These include field patterns, transverse mode selection and polarisation behaviour. This thesis describes experimental work done on an optically pumped VCSEL wafer. The output characteristics of the optically pumped VCSEL were investigated. Threshold powers, the optical spectrum, near fields, far fields and polarisation behaviour were studies. Higher order transverse modes were seen, and it was found that the polarisation behaviour of the VCSEL could be modified by optical feedback. A review of some of the physics involved in VCSEL structures and their output properties is also presented.

This book was released on 2014 with total page 136 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 1. Modulators An array of VCSELs is packaged and characterized for use as a modulator for rapid-update pulse-shaping at GHz rates. The amplitude and phase modulation characteristics of an injection-locked VCSEL are simultaneously measured at GHz modulation rates. 2. Optical Frequency Comb Sources An actively mode-locked semiconductor laser was assembled, with a 12.5 GHz repetition rate, ~ 200 individually resolvable comblines directly out of the laser, and high frequency stability. In addition, optical frequency comb sources are generated by modulation of a single frequency laser. 3. High-resolution optical spectral demultiplexers The demultiplexers are implemented using bulk optics, and are used to spatially resolve individual optical comblines onto the modulator array. 4. Optical waveform measurement techniques Several techniques are used to measure generated waveforms, especially for spectral phase measurements, including multi-heterodyne phase retrieval. In addition, an architecture for discriminating between ultrashort encoded optical pulses with record high sensitivity is demonstrated.

This book was released on 2002 with total page 7 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The design of vertical cavity surface emitting lasers (VCSELs) requires an understanding of the many different optical parameters of these structures, and the optimization of VCSELs requires deep understanding of the optical processes occurring in the active regions of such lasers. In a series of MBE processes, active regions of VCSELs as well as whole VCSELs were grown. The active regions of the VCSEL structures were designed for lambda = 1000 nanometers and 980 nanometer emission. They consisted of a pair of distributed Bragg reflectors (DBRs) composed of Aluminum Arsenide (AlAs) and Gallium Arsenide (GaAs) quarter wavelength layers and cavities made of GaAs. The cavities contained one or several quantum wells (QWs) made of In(0.2)Ga(0.8)As. To optimize the optical characteristics of the active regions, several experimental methods were applied. The Bragg reflectors and the entire microcavities were investigated by optical reflectivity. For selective excitation of a QW in a cavity active layer, a Ti-sapphire tuneable laser was used. The fine tuning between the QW emission and the cavity Fabry-Perot resonance was investigated by photoluminescence at varying temperatures of the sample. For monitoring the temporal evolution of the luminescence from the active region of the laser, time-resolved spectroscopy was employed. The combination of many methods of optical investigation enabled the authors to conduct a comprehensive characterization of VCSELs and, consequently, an optimization of the whole laser structure.
