Theoretical and experimental studies of the radiative properties of semiconductors are presented. Previous studies, potential applications and future developments are outlined. In Chapter 1, an introduction to the radiative properties is presented. Examples of instrumentation for measurements of the radiative properties is described in Chapter 2. In Chapters 3-11, case studies of the radiative properties of several semiconductors are elucidated. The modeling and applications of these properties are explained in Chapters 12 and 13, respectively. In Chapter 14, examples of the global infrastructure for these measurements are illustrated.

The authors provide some theoretical background about land surface emissivity and recall various retrieval methods.During the atmospheric hypersonic re-entry of a space vehicle, the extremely high temperatures generated in the shock layer between the bow shock and the vehicle lead to very high temperatures at the wall, the values of which depend mainly on the total heat flux impinging the surface, and its emissivity. The higher the emissivity of the surface, the lower the temperature that is achieved. Thus, in order to perform reliable temperature predictions at the surface during space re-entry into the atmosphere, the authors suggest that proper knowledge of material surface emissivity is mandatory.In the penultimate chapter, the emissivity due to neutrino-pair production in e+e- annihilation in the context of the 331RHν model is calculated in a way that can be used in supernova models.Lastly, a photoacoustic cell is constructed to view two different surfaces through a pair of out of phase optical chopping wheels records the difference in radiation fluxes from the two surfaces. The point at which a lock-in amplifier records a null in the photoacoustic signal is where the radiation fluxes from the two surfaces are identical, permitting the relative emissivities of the two surfaces to be determined.

Book excerpt: Infrared thermography enables the non-contact measurement of an object’s surface temperature and presents the results in form of thermal images. The analysis of these images provides valuable information about an object’s thermal state. However, the fidelity of the thermal images strongly depends on the pose of the thermographic camera with respect to the surface. 3D thermography offers the possibility to overcome this and other limitations that affect conventional 2D thermography but most 3D thermographic systems developed so far generate 3D thermograms from a single perspective or from few noncontiguous points of view and do not operate in real time. As a result, the 3D thermograms they generate do not offer much advantage over conventional thermal images. However, recent technological advances have unlocked the possibility of implementing affordable handheld 3D thermal imaging systems that can be easily maneuvered around an object and that can generate high-fidelity 3D thermograms in real time. This thesis explores various aspects involved in the real-time generation of high-fidelity 3D thermograms at close range using a handheld 3D thermal imaging system, presents the results of scanning an operating industrial furnace and discusses the problems associated with the generation of 3D thermograms of large objects with complex geometries.
