Increasing rate of penetration (ROP) is one of the goal of drilling engineers to build this path. This dissertation focuses on study of a novel drilling technique, i.e. passive Vibration Assisted Rotary Drilling (pVARD) technique, and characterization of drilling mechanisms in comparison to the other two widely used drilling techniques, i.e. rotary drilling and rotary-percussion drilling (RPD). In terms of the fundamental differences between drill bit vibrations from three drilling techniques, seismic while drilling (SWD) and acoustic emission (AE) technologies are used to study drill bit sources and corresponding drilling mechanisms. First, geomechanics response of synthetic rock is studied using AE technique based on standard confined compressive strength (CCS) tests. This research aims to compare synthetic to natural rock in terms of deformation properties and provides support for the following drill-off test (DOT). Second, pVARD tool drillings are conducted in comparison to rotary drilling both in laboratory and field tests using AE and SWD techniques, respectively. In laboratory, AE signal energy and cutting size distribution are correlated to polycrystalline diamond compact (PDC) bit drilling performance. Results show that micro crack is generated from drag bit shearing action and the higher AE energy, coarser cuttings and higher ROP are obtained. In field test, surface wave energy and frequency bandwidth are correlated to drill bit vibration and drilling performance. Third, laboratory active vibration DOTs are conducted to study the penetration mechanisms from a diamond coring bit using AE technique. Spectral and energy analysis of the AE signals indicate that the higher ROP and larger cutting size are correlated with a higher AE energy and a lower AE frequency, indicating larger fractures are being created to generate the larger size of cuttings. Fourth, rotary-percussion drilling sources are studied by two field experiments on weak shales and hard arkose using SWD technique. Characterization of these sources consist of spectral analysis and mean power study, along with field measurements of the source radiation patterns. In addition, polarization analysis is conducted on P-waves recorded at surface geophones for understanding the particle motions.

Book excerpt: The book presents topical theoretical and experimental studies for developing advanced methods of detecting materials fracture and assessing their structural state using acoustic emission. It introduces new mathematical models characterizing the displacement fields arising from crack-like defects and establishes a new criterion for classifying different types of materials fracture based on specific parameters obtained from wavelet transforms of acoustic emission signals. The book applies this approach to experimental studies in three types of materials—fiber-reinforced composites, dental materials, and hydrogen-embrittled steels.

Book excerpt: One of the main problems encountered in impregnated diamond core drilling operations for deep mineral explorations is to remotely infer bit wear state and to drill with optimal performance at great depth. Currently the optimal drilling performance relies heavily on operator experience. This paper aims to assess the feasibility of acoustic emission (AE) monitoring of the impregnated diamond drilling process and to establish relations between AE signals and diamond drill bit wear to improve overall drilling performance. AE relations with various drilling parameters have also been investigated to understand signal characteristics in relation to operational parameters. Echidna drill apparatus that simulates field exploration diamond drilling on a small scale is used to monitor AE during rock bit interaction. AE sensors were attached to both the drill and the rock in question to record acoustic signals being emitted whilst drilling. Two different tests viz. 'step tests' and 'wear tests' were carried out. Step tests on the Echidna drill include stepping down the depth of cut from 130μm to 0μm, while cutting speed is constant. Secondly, wear tests performed on the Echidna drill, involves accelerating the wear rate of the drill bit via two different types of tests, both in highly abrasive rock. Based on the step test results, a series of linear relations were developed. These relations are capable of estimating the depth of cut, weight on the bit (WOB) and torque on the bit (TOB) by simply using time spectrum of the AE signals. Wear tests also showed that AE amplitudes start to trend down over the time of accelerated wear.

Book excerpt: The theme of the 15th International Acoustic Emission Symposium (IAES15) was set as 'practicality for life-extension and maintenance of plants and structures'. Special emphasis was placed on the review of acoustic emission (AE) research and applications in the 20th century and its future in the 21st century. The technique for monitoring defects and abnormal vibrations due to machine failures is vitally important for the safety of structures in a modern society. AE, as a passive, rather than an active NDT method, has drawn much attention because of its applicability to on-stream surveillance of structures. One important point is its capability to acquire data very simply but with high sensitivity so that the development of a non-contact sensing technique is particularly important. A quantitative method to evaluate structural integrity and remaining life from the detected AE signals is strongly required. Quantitative analysis, based on inverse procedures, has provided a certain solution, but has not been utilized widely enough in structures due to its complexity. Its applicability is limited partly because the accuracy of solutions depends on noise levels and partly because the phenomenon is usually non-reproducible. AE is expected to be a next-generation technique not only to monitor conditions but also for the repair of damaged structures, combined with an active-adaptive technique using a 'solid state actuator'. 'Smart Materials and Structures' are known in this respect. AE is considered to be a very promising technique, together with such sensing techniques as optical fiber, shape memory alloy and electro-rheological fluid. Thus, AE can play a very important roll in monitoring, evaluating and repairing structures. In this workshop, a limited number of invited papers are presented for technical discussion to review the achievements of AE research and applications in the 20th century. The proceedings are entitled Acoustic Emission - Beyond the Millennium to celebrate the new millennium, and stepping forward to a new era. The authors and topics of these review papers were selected by the editorial board.

Book excerpt: The design of mechanical components for various engineering applications requires the understanding of stress distribution in the materials. The need of determining the nature of stress distribution on the components can be achieved with experimental techniques. Applications and Techniques for Experimental Stress Analysis is a timely research publication that examines how experimental stress analysis supports the development and validation of analytical and numerical models, the progress of phenomenological concepts, the measurement and control of system parameters under working conditions, and identification of sources of failure or malfunction. Highlighting a range of topics such as deformation, strain measurement, and element analysis, this book is essential for mechanical engineers, civil engineers, designers, aerospace engineers, researchers, industry professionals, academicians, and students.
