Book excerpt: Excerpt from Specimen Junior High School Programs of Study Kindly send me copies of junior high-school programs of study or tell me where I may Obtain copies Of such programs is the content Of numerous letters received by the Bureau Of Education. In order that these requests may be granted, this leaflet, which contains 25 programs Of study selected from those on file in this Office, has been prepared. Four Of the programs included are the work of State departments of public instruction and 21 of city school depart ments. The programs may be considered typical Of those in use in both the smaller and larger cities in various sections of the country. A comparison of the 25 programs reveals the fact that while no two are exactly alike, certain principles are fairly well adhered to. One is that the first junior high-school year, or at least the first half of that year, should be a transition or an adjustment period and that for this reason the courses should be a continuation Of the elementary courses but presented from a new viewpoint. Some schools, however, Offer electives in the first junior high-school year. Of the 25 school systems represented, 15 offer electives in the first year, 22 in the second, and 25 in the third. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Junior High School Idea Speyer School therefore has been developed and is developing as an experimental school where, under Professor Briggs' direction, the principal and teachers have been wholly free to work out such administrative methods and such courses of study as seemed best fitted to secure the results desired. The six hundred pupils have been public school boys (and for a time girls also) selected from some twenty neighboring elementary schools because of their promise of school success. On the whole, the pupils have been above the average New York City boys of their age in general intelligence. The twenty teachers too are above the average, having been selected for initiative, knowledge of subject matter, a willingness to try eagerly and honestly such innovations as have been proposed, and above all, for that professional spirit that leads them to consider first most carefully the reasons why a thing should be done at all, and then being satisfied on that point to do that thing as well as in them lies. The general aim of Speyer School as stated by Professor Briggs and accepted by the faculty and pupils of the school has been: First: "To teach pupils to do better those desirable activities that they will do anyway and to teach these by means of material in itself worth while." Second, "To reveal higher types of activities and to make these both desired and, to an extent, possible." Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Making a High School Program Hile every high school program is so dependent upon local conditions of one kind or another as to be very much of an individual problem, yet there are certain fundamental considerations that underlie all program making. This book is an attempt to set forth these fundamental considerations. It uses for illustrative purposes the steps followed in making the program of the Girls' High School of Boston, a school of 2100 pupils, but the type of program and the method of procedure outlined here have been applied successfully to high schools ranging in size from 200 to 2000; to high schools with fixed courses of study, and to those with a large amount of freedom in election; to high schools with programs made up largely of academic work, and to those with much shop or industrial work. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Book of the Ancient World is an account of our common heritage from the dawn of civilization to the coming of the Greeks. It is the story of how human beings began their great adventure of learning how to live; of how they have sought to satisfy the practical needs of their bodies, the questioning of their minds, and the searching of their spirits. To this end it subordinates details of political events to the record of things that lie at the foundation or our modern civilization. Dorothy Mills had an uncanny and unique ability to write history that is interesting and at the same time based on sound scholarship. Her direct, engaging approach is valued increasingly by the many parents in our day who are looking for reliable materials for home study, as well as by many private school educators. The highly-prized six volumes of her historical works (see below) have become very scarce on the used book market, and so Dawn Chorus has undertaken to reprint them as part of its effort to offer texts ideally suited to the needs of a new generation of teachers and students. In a world where the quality of education has so deteriorated, may the reissue of this wonderful historical series shine as a beacon to a new generation of young (and not so young) scholars . Dawn Chorus publishes these five other books by Dorothy Mills: The Book of the Ancient Greeks; The Book of the Ancient Romans; The People of Ancient Israel; The Middle Ages; and Renaissance and Reformation Times. Dawn Chorus has also republished another outstanding, and long-out-of-print historical series perfectly suited for home or school use (and highly recommended in home-school curricula), entitled The Picturesque Tale of Progress, by Olive Beaupre Miller. It is available in large format (9 volumes), or smaller, double-bound format (5 volumes).

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Projects for the High School: Sample Materials for Junior and Senior High School The projects included in this bulletin represent a selection of materials which illustrate what may be done in the junior and senior high school. The projects which follow constitute a selection from a much larger number, but we have endeavored to include samples for each of grades seven to nine, inclusive. Space will permit us to present only one project for the senior high school. In our selection we have endeavored to include projects which enlist a variety of interests and which cover a number of subjects. These projects have been developed in the Extension Courses in the Project Method of Instruction. We feel that they will be of aid to New Jersey teachers in planning similar undertakings. We desire to express our thanks to the county superintendents, city superintendents, principals, and presidents of teachers' organizations who have co-operated in the organization of our Extension Courses, and who by their untiring efforts have contributed so much to making them a success. Book excerpt: Excerpt from High School and Class Management Under the head of general management, for instance, many things are included which are sometimes discussed under methods of teaching or class management. Another departure Will appear in the distinction made between class manage ment and the technique of teaching. The materials for the treatment of the latter topic have been taken largely from notes on observations in the field during thirteen years of experience in the inspection of the high schools of a state, supplemented by an extensive visitation and study of high schools in all parts of the, United States. Much of this has previously appeared in articles published in School and Home Education. Free use has been made, by permission, of various programs of study, especially those of intermediate schools, as illustra tive of the points discussed. Our sincere thanks are due the superintendents and principals of the schools thus referred to. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
