Book Synopsis Modeling of the Geosynchronous Orbit Plasma Environment by : Henry B. Garrett
Download or read book Modeling of the Geosynchronous Orbit Plasma Environment written by Henry B. Garrett and published by . This book was released on 1978 with total page 44 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A preliminary statistical analysis of the ATS-5 and ATS-6 geosynchronous plasma data has been carried out. Variations in the electron and ion currents and temperatures, as represented by the single Maxwellian component temperatures T(AVG) and T(RMS), are evaluated with respect to local time and geomagnetic activity. The potential on the satellites is similarly evaluated. Results indicate that the geosynchronous plasma cannot be adequately represented by a simple Maxwellian distribution and that, at the very least, a two component Maxwellian is necessary. The electron current and eclipse potential were found to vary strongly with K sub p while the temperatures only varied weakely. Local time variations in temperature and current were observed but these were outweighted by a significant local time variation in satellite potential which peaked near midnight. An explanation of these results is proposed in terms of a simple model of the time evolution of the plasma following an injection. (Author).

Book Synopsis Guide to Mitigating Spacecraft Charging Effects by : Henry B. Garrett
Download or read book Guide to Mitigating Spacecraft Charging Effects written by Henry B. Garrett and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2012-05-22 with total page 202 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The definitive guide to the modern body of spacecraft charging knowledge—from first principles for the beginner to intermediate and advanced concepts The only book to blend the theoretical and practical aspects of spacecraft charging, Guide to Mitigating Spacecraft Charging Effects defines the environment that not only creates the aurora, but which also can have significant effects on spacecraft, such as disruption of science measurements and solar arrays from electrostatic discharge (ESD). It describes in detail the physics of the interaction phenomenon as well as how to construct spacecraft to enhance their survivability in the harsh environment of space. Combining the authors' extensive experience in spacecraft charging—and in their provision of design support to NASA, JPL, the commercial satellite market, and numerous other projects—this incredible book offers both a robust physics background and practical advice for neophytes in the field and experienced plasma physicists and spacecraft engineers. In addition to containing numerous equations, graphs, tables, references, and illustrations, Guide to Mitigating Spacecraft Charging Effects covers: Solar cell technology, especially higher voltage arrays, and the new design approaches that are appropriate for them Information about the space plasma environment New analytic computer codes to analyze spacecraft charging Spacecraft anomalies and failures which emphasized designs that are of greater importance than others

Book Synopsis Ring Current Investigations by : Vania K. Jordanova
Download or read book Ring Current Investigations written by Vania K. Jordanova and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2020-06-18 with total page 334 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ring Current Investigations offers a comprehensive description of ring current dynamics in the Earth's magnetosphere as part of the coupled magnetosphere-ionosphere system. In order to help researchers develop a deeper understanding of the fundamental physics of geomagnetic storms, it includes a detailed description of energetic charged particles injection, trapping, and loss. It reviews historical and recent advances in observations, measurements, theory and simulations of the inner magnetosphere and its coupling to the ionosphere and other surrounding plasma populations. In addition, it compares the physics of ring currents at other strongly magnetized planets in the solar system, specifically Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune, with the ring current system at Earth. Providing a description of the most important space weather effects driven by inner magnetospheric energetic particles during geomagnetic storms and present capabilities for their nowcast and forecast, Ring Current Investigations is an important reference for researchers in geophysics and space science, especially related to plasma physics, the ionosphere and magnetosphere, solar-terrestrial relations, and spacecraft anomalies. - Includes an appendix with links to downloadable video clips, illustrating features of ring current and geomagnetic storm dynamics - Provides overview of existing state-of-the-art numerical models and links for open-source code downloads - Offers guidance on how to develop numerical models within the context of the present-day understanding
Book Synopsis The Current Status of Predictions of Low Energy Plasma Interactions with Space Systems by : Henry B. Garrett
Download or read book The Current Status of Predictions of Low Energy Plasma Interactions with Space Systems written by Henry B. Garrett and published by . This book was released on 1979 with total page 44 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The present status of low energy magnetospheric plasma interactions with space systems is reviewed. The role of predictions in meeting user needs in assessing the impact of such interactions is described. In light of the perceived needs of the user community and of the current status of modeling and prediction efforts, it is suggested that for most user needs more detailed statistical models of the low energy environment are required. In order to meet current prediction requirements, real-time in situ measurements are proposed as a near-term solution. (Author).
