Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: After three decades of research, neurobehavioral toxicity is now acknowledged as a significant outcome of chemical exposure. Its health and economic costs may exceed those by cancer by substantial amounts. This new perspective has been accompanied by efforts designed to explore the responsible mechanisms, to design applicable risk assessment procedures, and to determine the consequent policy implications. This publication includes 25 papers from international experts and includes: human neurobehavioral toxicity; animal behavioral methods; selected model compounds; and risk assessment.

Book excerpt: This book provides a unique and timely multidisciplinary synthesis of our current knowledge of the anatomy, pharmacology, physiology and behavioral data of the serotonin (5-HT)-dopamine (DA) interactions. Central serotonergic and dopaminergic systems play a critical role in the regulation of normal and abnormal behaviors. Moreover, recent evidence suggests that the dysfunction of the DA and 5-HT neurotransmitter systems contribute to various mental disorders including depression, schizophrenia, drug addiction and Parkinson's disease. This extremely important topic is of wide interest within the scientific community, with relevance not only to specialists but also to general practitioners and students. The book provides a valuable contribution to the debate on new pharmacological approaches for several psychopathological states, with contributions from expert neuroscientists and pharmacologists who comprehensively survey the most significant currently active areas of dopamine/serotonin interactions. * Provides an understanding of the interaction between Serotonin and Dopamine. * Appeals equally to specialists, general practitioners, students and researchers. * Contributes to the debate on new pharmacological approaches to several psychopathological states * Gives a comprehensive anatomical description plus the physiology and pharmacology of dopaminergic and serotonergic systems * Singles out neuropsychiatric and suggests new therapeutic approaches.

Book excerpt: Expanding on the National Research Council's Guide for the Care and Use of Laboratory Animals, this book deals specifically with mammals in neuroscience and behavioral research laboratories. It offers flexible guidelines for the care of these animals, and guidance on adapting these guidelines to various situations without hindering the research process. Guidelines for the Care and Use of Mammals in Neuroscience and Behavioral Research offers a more in-depth treatment of concerns specific to these disciplines than any previous guide on animal care and use. It treats on such important subjects as: The important role that the researcher and veterinarian play in developing animal protocols. Methods for assessing and ensuring an animal's well-being. General animal-care elements as they apply to neuroscience and behavioral research, and common animal welfare challenges this research can pose. The use of professional judgment and careful interpretation of regulations and guidelines to develop performance standards ensuring animal well-being and high-quality research. Guidelines for the Care and Use of Mammals in Neuroscience and Behavioral Research treats the development and evaluation of animal-use protocols as a decision-making process, not just a decision. To this end, it presents the most current, in-depth information about the best practices for animal care and use, as they pertain to the intricacies of neuroscience and behavioral research.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Pattern vision in the rat bas been most effectively studied by a jumping method devised by Lashley (1930). This procedure requires the rat to jump at one of two cards bearing the patterns to be discriminated. On the basis of Laehley0́9s extensive anatomical and behavioural studies it has been assumed that the cards fall within the rat0́9s binocular field of vision and, consequently, that they are seen as a whole at the time when the visual patterns begin to influence behaviour during discrimination learning. Ehrenfreund (1948), however, thought that the rat0́9s effective field, in the Lashley jumping apparatus, might be limited to the lower margin of the cards, and has demonstrated this experimentally in certain conditions of training. Since Ehrenfreund0́9s data have been interpreted as bearing on the current continuity-noncontinuity controversy concerning the nature of learning, his experiment is of general importance. Ehrenfreund trained his rats on a modified Lashley jumping apparatus to discriminate between an upright and an inverted triangle in two differing experimental situations. In one condition, the triangles were raised eight centimetres above the bottom margin of the cards. The platform from which the rats jumped, as in the usual procedure, remained level with the platform on which they found food. In the second, the platform was also raised, so that the rats were jumping at the centre of the cards where the triangles were now located. [...]" --

Book excerpt: Methods in Chemosensory Research describes new molecular, electrophysiological, engineering, genetic, behavioral, psychophysical, and imaging techniques that have recently been adapted to investigate the basic neuronal mechanisms underlying chemoreception. Written by leaders in the field of neuronal chemoreception specializing in olfaction, gustation, baroreception, and chemical irritation caused by environmental pollutants, this unique book combines novel methods to investigate all aspects of taste and olfaction. These methods range from the molecular level to the investigation of individual cell taste and olfactory epithelia.
